The BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8206163.stm) webiste is running a story on the findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and they found that gamers "were less healthy, fatter, and more depressed than non-gamers."

A UK survey from 2002, conducted by the Leisure Software Publishers Association, found the average gamer was aged between 25 and 34.

But it also suggested that the average age of the keenest players is gradually edging upwards, a finding reinforced by the CDC finding.

Make of it what you will, not the most earth shattering of findings and could be eaily levelled at many big gaming countries. Though the mental health issues could be something nobody wants to admit too readily.

But what if the real correlation is that people are depressed because they're fat, and so they turn to games????

I'll admit, I'm fat. It wasn't gaming that caused it. It was graduating college and having to get a "real" job. This job, which sticks me at a desk for at least 9 hours a day, caused me to no long be able to get the constant exercise I used to. I therefore submit that games don't make people fat, work makes people fat.

I'm not fat, I'm healthy, and I'm happy (I'd be happier with a job). Does that make me a non gamer? Honestly, most of my friends are all in the same category, and while we all have our issues, these sorts of "studies" generally just seem to be a load of BS.

The results of the survey shouldn't really but much of a surprise, but I wonder how the results would look when compared to people who are primarily into other introverted or sedentary activities such as reading?

I bet most of the people in the survey play nothing but WoW.

Gaming doesn't make people fat.

Corn syrup makes people fat.

Huh ... I'm 6 ft tall, 190lbs, and happy as a clam. So I suppose I'm just not hardcore enough. I will work on that.

I think I speak for everyone when I say:

"can you please post a picture of your bombshell sitting on top of your money, ...maybe in a seductive pose?"

You know, for reasons of proof. ;)

You know, if you actually read the article the BBC is commenting on an AMERICAN study that studied americans and then compared it to the results UK survey done in the UK...

Um ... suck on that one?

No, not any more than someone who smokes cigarettes and has been lucky enough to not get cancer, emphysema or heart disease could be called a non-smoker. The singular of data is datum, not anecdote.
