Apparently ad support alone isn't covering all the costs for Quake Live and during QuakeCon's keynote speech id founder John Carmack revealed that Quake Live will be getting a premium subscription service to attempt to generate more revenue.
"The in-game advertising stuff has not been big business. That's not going to be able to carry the project," Carmack said. As such, the new subscription model will ad extra revenue, although Carmack promised it will remain entirely optional. An exact price and date wasn't revealed, but if a player eventually chooses to subscribe, they'll be able to run and customize their own private servers for the game. Otherwise, gamers can continue playing for free as they have been all along.

It's probably doing fine, but they are looking over at Battlefield Heroes and the amount the average user is spending there and are creaming their pants.

I had read an article last week that said the average user spends $20 on Battlefield Heroes, that's a big chunk of change.

This surprises me because BH is probably the buggiest game I've had installed on my computer in years. I couldn't spend money on that game even if I wanted to! Well good to know somebody out there is apparently enjoying it.
I found Quake Live to be intermittently fun for a week or so, but honestly the game play just felt like too much of a step backwards. And this is coming from someone who regularly fires up old games and is all about giving props to the classics. But it's hard to devote an evening to it when there's so many other good online FPS on my hard drive, only a click away.

Hmm, I'd have to disagree with you from my personal experience regarding BH being buggy. I've don't recall EVER experiencing a bug or glitch in that game. Maybe my time with it is unlike most others, but I find it to be well-made and a lot of fun.
*On a side note, I'm too cheap to spend money on a game that is F2P, except BattleForge, that game rocks.

I usually play Quake Live during my lunch with co-workers. I played it once or twice at home, but didn't get into it. Since it's browser based, it's easy to get people to jump in and play a quick game.

I give this 12 months max before they pull the plug.

I'm all for paying to have a private server. The game was very convenient for everyone to jump into at our last LAN party but tough (impossible) to get everyone into the same server. BFH has the same issue but maybe worse.

the community wants private servers, and fast. For the dedicated player quake live is lacking and in beta, so those go hand in hand. However they lack decent revenue I think with their current model.

I spend an average of 3-4 hours a night, sometimes much much more. Private custom servers? I would probably pay depending on cost. There are a lot of us that play consistently.

You're lucky I'm not your SysAdmin, that shit would end immediately!
