Jeez, what a thoroughly lackluster selection!

Off-topic - I went to see The Matador this weekend and it was fantastic. So nice to see Pierce Brosnan shedding his James Bond persona and dominating every scene he was in.

I am geeked about the Dune re-release. I love that movie!

I read Dune over the summer, and loved it. Truly one of the best imaginings of a science fiction universe I have ever enjoyed. I intended to see the film and the sci-fi miniseries immediatly, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I supposed I'll check them out now ... another couple of hours worth of free time I don't have. Oh well. I'll get it it all eventually.

Is this the REAL extended edition of Dune? I saw the commercial and they said it had 30 minutes more footage.... I thought the real one was like more than an hour of extended footage?

Ok I did a little bit of research and NO it's not a real full release of the extended version :

From an Amazon.com review:

"The good news is that both the theatrical and extended versions of this film are in the proper aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and from what I can tell, the extended cut is true widescreen and not just a cropped version of the 1.33:1 TV format (I have an advance copy of the DVD).

Also, the colours are pretty good for the extra scenes, although for the most part noticeable when they're inserted into the film, but aren't as noticeable as the bootleg versions of the extended cut.

And now for the BAD NEWS..., oh sure, it is the extended cut all right, the one from TV, you know, the one with new scenes added, and questionable scenes removed, for the over sensitive viewing audience...!!!

Yeppers, so what we get here is the version missing the baron's psycho flight about the room, covered in what looks like oil, just before pulling the young boys heart plug...

So, I guess I'll have to hold onto the bootleg copy of the fully UNCUT extended version of this movie (even if it is in pan and scan) "

I'll get it... but meh!

That's a shame. There's a great video store near my home in Newark, Delaware, that likely has a VHS copy of the fully uncut bootleg. I'll check it out before I watch the trimmed "extended" cut on DVD.

I am happy to announce that I will be purchasing all 5 versions of Curious George and painstakingly comparing each version, pixel by pixel, to determine which version is the best and worthy of all our hard earned money. I will provide the results in a 42 page thesis, legal spaced, for the EvAv community's benifit.

Now, now- don't you all thank me at once!

Am I the only one who refuses to have anything to do with the new Curious George? It's such a treasured childhood memory, I probably had the books read to me first when I was three or four. Simply seeing the film preview has filled me with the insane urge to kill everyone involved.

I just finished reading Dune a few weeks ago. The Lynch film was one of my first awesome movie theater experiences (I was 10 when it came out), not sure why I never picked up any of the books before now. In any event I'll be picking this one up to add to my collection. I really need to check out this extended bootleg that everyone keeps mentioning...

I've seen all incarnations of Dune put to screen (extended, theatrical, mini-series). The only way to expierience this series is to get off your ass and read the books. Probably the most rewarding science fiction literature I've ever read.

Not only do I share your feelings but I also think that when I have kids I'm never going to let them watch flims of anything I've ever read or watched in the past.

I wholeheartedly agree...even if the series does end on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Now, the new books...well, just stay away.

i read all the dune books awhile back (yes i read past the first one, and let me tell you, they get better and better).

I saw the movie way earlier and liked it, but again i was probably 10 at the time and my scatterbrain didnt put 2 in 2 together. Now if i watched it now after reading all the books Id probably be horrified.

Note: Do NOT read the prequel books before the dune books! They are way based on the events of the originals and reveal tons of secrets blatantly in the dune universe. Frank was really subtle about alot of it, and they just let the floodgates go in the prequels..

The new books are allright. Think of them as fluff rather than literature.

sort of like if kevin j anderson or timothy zahn wrote a LOTR universe book.

If Kevin J. Anderson writes Dune 7 I'll... fuck, I can't think of a threat dire enough to express my feelings. Let's just say I'll do something really bad.

I'll put it this way: if you can scrounge up "The Dune Encyclopedia" by Willis McNelly (currently out of print and going for about $35 on Amazon), flip through it and tell me if you still prefer Brian Herbert's version of the Dune mythology. It's not completely canon, but it was given Frank Herbert's blessing and is, to me, a hell of a lot more plausible.

I mean, come on...the Bene Gesserit, the Mentats, the Suk School, the Ginaz Swordmaster school, the Navigators/Space Folding, energy shielding, the atomics prohibition, the Atreides/Harkonnen feud, the Fremen...all find their origin as the result of one short war? The new Dune novels cheapen and destroy the awesome sense of time and history that Frank Herbert was trying to put forward. And Brian isn't one tenth the philosopher his father was.

oh dont get me wrong, they are nowhere near the league of frank, its just that I enjoyed them like i would a terry brooks or a clive cussler.. just for fun rather than getting anything out of it..

huh i didnt think it was one short war.. the robot war lasted for a couple hundred years in the prequels from what i can remember.

Really? I'll have to go see it then. It can't be worse than Big Momma's House 2...
