HitFix has posted a rumor (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/2008-12-6-motion-captured/posts/bryan-singer-boards-battlestar-galactica-for-universal) that X-Men director Brian Singer will be returning to direct to a Battlestar Galactica film he proposed back in 2001.

One of the many casualties of Sept. 11, 2001 was the Tom De Santo/Bryan Singer version of "Battlestar Galactica," designed as a sequel to the '70s show, which was less than three months from shooting when the attacks on America happened. Since the Cylon sneak attack was a big part of the $14 million backdoor pilot they were about to shoot, Sci-Fi got very nervous about the film, and everything fell apart.

In the time since, obviously, Ron Moore and David Eick and the entire amazing creative team who did bring "Battlestar Galactica" back to television managed to not only get a new show on the air, but they've completed their run and they're gearing up on a spinoff series, "Caprica." Despite the amount of critical love that was displayed for the show during its run, I wouldn't call Moore's "Galactica" a phenomenon. It was more like a very enthusiastic and vocal cult audience. As a result, Universal seems to feel that there's more life in the property, and that there is room for another interpretation.

That's why they're nearing a deal with Bryan Singer to produce and possibly direct a brand-new "Battlestar Galactica" feature film.

Update: Variety has confirmed (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118007275.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) this rumor.

Universal Pictures has set Bryan Singer to direct and produce a feature version of "Battlestar Galactica."

It's not clear whether Ronald Moore, exec producer of the recent series, will be invited to write the screenplay, but Singer will clearly put his own creative stamp on the project, as the studio indicates that the film will be "a complete reimagination."

Glen Larson is aboard to produce.

And completely botched by Brian Singer.

They already remade BSG and it was better than Brian Singer's aborted version was. It was quality that killed Singer's attempt not a terrorist attack his ideas were shitty the producers stalled the project because of it.

This made me a giggle, I don't know why but I'm pretty sure it's the goody gumdrops.

Bryan Singer is a very talented director, but I really don't see what is left to be done with the Battlestar Gallactica universe. Ron Moore pretty much sealed it shut with BSG. And I'm not saying I enjoyed every single minute. Hollywood has gone "reboot" crazy. I think these guys should spend their time and energy creating something new and original.

At least reboot Buck Rogers or something.

There should be an at least 20 year moritorium on rebooting of any given property. Rebooting AGAIN within 5 years is just crazy.

Worst case scenario is it sucks, which it probably won't except to the fanboys of this new gen, if it does ill ignore it. If its good, then I also win.

Ya..im good.

Still, without Adama and crew it really won't be the same to me.

Sweet. I loved the original series, but the new one was terrible after season 1. I look forward to seeing a different interpretation of this universe.

Oh I don't know. I loved the new Galactica. A LOT. But it was very much a seriously dramatic spin on a story that was very much silly and swashbuckling. If Singer attemped a more Star Wars like take on the story, which is more accurate to it's original incarnation, I think it could be so dissimilar to the tv series as to be a whole different property.

I think there is a ton of interesting stuff to explore before the colonies went kaboom. I don't see how or why this would need a reboot yet.

I like Singer and his work. But this is such a bad idea. Ron Moore's work on BSG was the best and making a movie that messes with that is a massive mistake.

I agree that they need to let stuff stand on it's own for a while.

I don't think the paying customers will react well to this kind of mindset in development.

It won't succeed.

All of the original-version BSG fans won't see it because "It's another remake"
All of the current-version BSG fans won't see it because "We already own the series on DVD."

What he needs to do is take the money for this project and use it to bring another 80s phenomenon to the screen: The Centurions!

Why make a 2 hour movie of a 50 hour series that was pretty much already perfect? I'm ok with adding on to the existing vision, but creating a brand new one doesn't make sense.
