Let's face it: PC gaming is the king.

It's the place where a player with the initiative would fancy himself as the creator of his own game. And in recent years, it's also been a legitimate proving ground where the largest concentration of new gameplay ideas are conceived and tested.

Having said that, ModDB's Mods of 2005 Award (http://features.moddb.com/218/Mods-of-2005/) celebrates the best and brightest the modding scene has to offer.

Can't believe Natural Selection is rated so low. Has anyone tried Last Man Standing (Doom 3 coop)?

Natural Selection should definitely be higher, I agree.

It's all I play these days.

Seconded, Natural Selection is in a whole different class than most that stuff. I mean, that stupid DBZ mod and a Battlefield Vietnam mod in the top 5, with NS at 10? Insanity.

Dystopia is interesting, but could be a lot deeper. Solid potential though.

Well, it seems this top 15 list is reader-voted, so blame the people. Dragonball Z fans. Yeesh.

A lot of those mods are old too. I like NS as much as the next guy, but it's been around for years.

edit: Is there a NS server that EvAv people play on regularly?

You ever bothered to actually try playing it? It's much deeper then that one quake 3 mod that got all the attention.

For mine, Natural Selection is better than any PC game (let alone mod) that came out in 2005. I would add 2004 and previous years to that, but unfortunately my memory does not stretch back that far so I can't be sure.

Admittedly, I have not. But judging by the tone of the entry, even the ModDB guys aren't big fans. I'll maybe give it a shot eventually on one of my mod splurges that I go through every few months.

I'm pretty sure Natural Selection has been out a while, hasn't it? Longer than just 2005.

Since 2002 I think. And that is my point.

Mod of the year doesn't seem to refer to mods created in the past year. Obvious.

I think that NS Armslab is the "it" server, but I can't speak for other EvAvers.

Excellent post. Either mods don't get the coverage they used to or I stopped looking in the right places. I didn't know about the majority of these and felt like not much had happened since CS took over the world and Valve started sucking people up and turning them professional.

I'm especially pleased to be introduced to Ashes of Apocalypse, the world needs more post apocalyptic RPG's. The two that exist are the best RPG's ever. Why didn't someone copy them?

LMS is pretty cool actually, both the co-op and the last man standing gametypes. They did a good job of making most of the sp game co-op-able, though there are still a few bugs every now and then. If you like mowing down monsters, try the last man standing game mode.

My jaw is on the floor....people are still making mods for the decrepid HL1?

Well, yes and no. HL1 has a GIGANTIC modding community that's still somewhat popular. But most the HL1 mods on that list are at least a year or two old.
