Capcom is getting ready to sell you more of its back catalog with news that survival horror classic Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Dino Crisis have all been given fresh ratings from the ESRB in order to be released on the PlayStation 3.

Back in May we reported that Capcom were planning to release lots of ‘classic’ games on the PSN. Well, the ESRB has now rated three of those classics: Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis – all the PlayStation versions, of course. The ESRB site doesn’t have the search fields in the URL so we can’t give you links to the ratings for the games, but search for them and you’ll see the newly added “PlayStation 3″ platform under each one. No dates yet, of course, but presumably we’ll see these on our Store sooner rather than later.

Thanks TheSixthAxis. (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/08/10/dino-crisis-resi-2-and-nemesis-heading-to-psn/)

1. Do these PSN bought titles work on PS3 without BC?

2. If you already own a PS1 or PS2 game that is offered on the PSN but it is NOT a PS3 with BC can you download the version that has been modded to work on the PS3 for free?

Nice! I love Dino Crisis, especially DC2. Hope they bring that out.

"PSOne Classics" are all PSX games and don't have any issues with your PS3/PSP regardless of backwards compatibility.

1. All PS3s play PS1 games, so there is no BC issue. There are no PS2 games for download.

2. Why would you expect anything for free? How would you go about proving that you even own the original in order to vouch for that?

1. All SKUs of the PS3 have BC for the PS1 and can play all PS1 discs?

2. I didn't ask for anything for free. I asked if they would allow users to play their PS2 titles that they own and have paid for on the PS3. You would put your PS2 disc into the drive and it would read it and then download the emulation software to run it the same way that the 360 has BC for the Xbox on nearly every Xbox game now (took them about a year 1/2 but it got there) using software emulation.

I want to buy a PS3 now (well when the price drop comes) and I'd like to still be able to play all my great PS2 games on my main screen.

There are a couple of games that don't run well (the X-Files game for example is a total mess) or some not at all, but probably about 99% of all PS1 games run on the PS3.

2. If you just download software to allow you to play that version on your console, I can see that, though I wouldn't expect it. If you're expecting to download the full version of the game just by putting in the disc I wouldn't count on it. It would be far too easy to just pass a disc around among friends, unless it required the disc to be in the tray at all times to play.

As far as the 360's BC, there are still games that I'd like to see added, but they've stopped. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is at the top of that list.

On another interesting note you can actually turn any PSone game into a playable PSP game provided you have the latest hacked firmware.

I do not.

You can legally play any PS Classic game on PSP also, and without modifying firmware.

This isn't directly related to the post, but has anybody had issues playing Wild Arms on PSP? I've been playing fine for hours, but I'm at a boss and every time I use a certain spell at some point during the fight the game locks up.

I wish they would have kept going with the BC on the 360. There are too many games on there I cant play, which is a pain in the ass.

I own Dino Crisis and RE1-3 and a ps2, so meh. I never beat Dino Crisis, so maybe I'll try that out again some time. I am so happy I never sold my old games to have money to buy new ones. The Gamestop generation is going to be pissed when they start having to buy shit they already owned 10 years ago but sold it so they could buy Dynasty Warriors 7.

Really, what? I can play my entire Xbox library except for the Jet Grind Radio/Burnout 3 dual disk. I know there are something around 5% of games left unported, but most of those are complete shit.

A few years ago before they had almost everything ported, I enjoyed the posts that listed off what else people wanted, but at this point the posts are vague and most of them come from people like you (a very clear Sony shill from your posts) or Gorvi (a Sony fan who is probably not a shill).

The rest of us are too busy playing the 95% of games that are BC on the 360, or NEW games on the 360, PS3, and Wii to bitch about the literal handful of titles worth a shit that won't be ported.

Cool news. I wish they'd do the same sort of thing for XBLA.

Know what would be really cool, though? A brand new Dino Crisis, in the same vein as RE 4/5 (but maybe a bit more survival than action). It's time we saw more from the series, especially after the shitty Xbox game.

Probably not a shill, boy, now there's a compliment if I ever read one. I see you haven't stopped throwing around the shill/fanboy label, being the 360 apologist you are you look like quite the hypocrite.

It's not perfect, bean, really, you can admit that. Nobody's going to come take your 360 away if you admit that. They did a good job, but they did leave out some games that people would want. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, as I mentioned before, but also Gun Valkyrie, Deus Ex: Invisibile War, and Crimson Sea are some other original XBOX games that don't work on the 360 that I have. Of course, that's better than the PS2 BC in every PS3 sold today, considering it actually exists.

That's bullshit and our posting record shows it. I find PLENTY of problems in the Xbox 360 and plenty of cool things on the PS3. I'm a gamer that now has all the consoles

Yes. They only have about 95% of the titles ported and a handful of decent ones remain. It's not perfect but the only people that bitch about it anymore are you and someone who is a shill (check out his posts seriously).

See, that's why I'm not sure if you are a shill or a fan. With the exception of Stranger's Wrath, those games are all terrible and have ratings that show it, and I'm not sure if you had to go looking for them or you actually own them.

I'm a game fan. I love playing Valkyria Chronicles on my roommate's PS3 as much as I am really enjoyed Tales of Vesparia (that you PS3 fans will soon get). I'm going back through Infinite Undiscovery and finding things to like now that I've beaten Tales of Vesparia (clearly a superior title to it in every way).

The fact that you sometimes choose to see the faults in your console of choice makes me think that you are a fan, but when you choose to go out of your way to overstate faults of a competitor I start to think you are a shill. You are either a huge fanatic or a very smart shill. I simply can't tell.

I'm a fan of gaming, period. I actually enjoyed Crimson Sea, even though it really is just a clone of Dynasty Warriors in a Sci Fi setting. Gun Valkyrie was fun too. I'd just rather be able to fully pack up my original XBOX, the thing takes up a lot of space, but I'll leave it connected for those.

All consoles have faults, I'm not bitching about these so much as pointing them out. By far the 360 has the best current BC out there. I know the Wii has full GC BC, but there are more original XBOX games I'd still want to play than GC games.

And Tales.... meh. But that's how I feel about the entire series, not just the newest game. They've just never appealed to me, and I did try the demo for Vesperia. The combat just isn't all that fun, IMO. To each their own, though.

The demo is a travesty that fails to communicate HOW to play to the player and makes you feel like the combat is random and crap because of that.

Give it a Gamefly when it comes out on PS3 (or now on the 360) and I think you'll enjoy it. I know you tend to like the strategy RPGs more than the action but Tales is really, really good. It is by far the best current-gen RPG (so far).

I could, but my game time is so limited that I doubt I'll ever end up doing that. I'd much rather play Lost Odyssey, but even with that I've got Persona 4 lined up as my "next" console RPG to play.

Both of those are really good, and you've been saying that forever now. Final Fantasy XIII will be out by the time you finally get around to playing these and you still have time to play old Xbox titles?

Nope, I don't, but I still hate admitting that. Having the whole full time job/house to take care of/wife and kids thing sorta cuts into your gaming time. Just a little. The only RPGs on console I think I'll have time for in the next year will probably be Demon's Souls, Persona 4, White Knight Chronicles (it's Level 5, I have to make time) and FFXIII. Most of my RPG gameing these days is on handhelds, and thankfully, the best RPGs these days generally are on handhelds.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that. With the exception of "The World Ends with You", I find most handheld RPGs to be utter tripe.

Then either you've been playing the wrong games or your tastes can simply not be trusted. ;)

The RPGs on handhelds over the past few years run circles around the vast majority of what passes for JRPGs on the consoles these days.

Class of Heroes
Crimson Gem Saga
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Dark Spire
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Etrian Odyssey
Etrian Odyssey II
Jeanne d'Arc
Knights in the Nightmare
Legacy of Ys Books I & II
Luminous Arc
Luminous Arc 2
Riviera: The Promised Land
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Star Ocean: First Departure
Star Ocean: Second Evolution
Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier
Wild ARMs XF
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone

And in the fall you can add:
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days
Lunar: Harmony of the Silver Star
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona

Not all "great", but the library as a whole on handhelds is far superior to it's console counterpart over the past few years. I know I'm forgetting some, though.....

Look at this year alone, if you stuck to consoles all you'd have is two mediocre sequels: Star Ocean IV and Magna Carta 2. There is Demon's Souls, but that's more a Western style RPG made by a Japanese dev.

EDIT: Because I'm an idiot I forgot about the Wii & PS2 RPGs this year, such as Sakura Wars (which looks really good), Arc Rise Fantasia, and Devil Summoner 2. That's kinda weird seeing the Wii & PS2 being the best places for RPGs this year on home consoles.

In fact, most of those are crap. I could have easily have just listed all HD console RPGs. I wasn't asking for you to advocate for handheld RPGs by listing almost all of them but to point out which ones are actually worth a shit. I've only played about 25% of those and without exception they were shit.

You do make the point that the last few years of handheld RPGs create options, but then you'd have to compare that to the absolutely great PS2 and 360 RPGs that have been coming out on consoles.

As far as great:

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Dark Spire
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Etrian Odyssey
Jeanne d'Arc
Wild ARMs XF
Yggdra Union

If you think those are shit there's simply no hope for you. You weren't one of those who's first RPG was FFVII, are you?

3 of the 5 I tried are in your list so I guess you would think my taste is terrible since I don't like highly derivative games that imitate other (better) PS2 games with lower production values. Taste being subjective though, I think we'll just have to agree that our taste differs enough that we should not take recommendations from one another (or at least I should not take recommendations from you on Sony products).

In any case, there ARE plural Xbox 360 exclusive RPGs that are excellent:

Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect
Fable 2
Tales of Vesparia

Plus, Infinite Undiscovery and Blue Dragon aren't bad. Some people really like them. I'm just not one of those people. The PS3 has Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles (both of which I liked).

You do know that half the games I listed are DS games, right? ;) Which were derivative of PS2 games? Disgaea, which was an enhanced port?
