From The Revolution Lifestyle (http://theboard.zogdog.com/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=11&):
According to a job listing at Creative Heads, an associate sponsor for the D.I.C.E Summit 2006 held next month in Nevada, Midway Studios of Austin is looking for a Level Layout Designer for a first-person shooter slated for all three next-generation consoles.
From the Web site:
"Midway-Studios Austin has exciting opportunities for Level Layout Designers to apply their specialized skills on a high profile, next-generation first-person shooter using the Unreal 3 engine. You will be instrumental in visualizing game levels, and working under the direction of the Lead Level Designer. You will work within a level strike team, with a scripter, an audio implementer, and environment artists, to turn your dream into a reality.

If this turns out to be true, does this mean that the Rev won't be as weak as many people think?
Holy shit! Unreal Tournament looks amazing (where have I been).
Anyways good news for Revolution if true!

You don't need as powerful a system if it's only going to run at 640x480 basically. Good news for Revolution fans...this is probably the first we've heard of a multiplatform game with the Revolution included.

UT 2004 was incredibly scalable and looked great on lower end machines, I have no reason to believe that UT Engine 3 will be any less so. Good for Epic that they are supporting all 3 systems.
I'm sure all it took was a convincing demo of Metroid Prime for Nintendo to say, "So, do you want to be the standard FPS engine for the Revolution with this controller?"

UE3 is highly scalable. This is what the developers have to say:

The engine maybe highly scalable. Keep in mind that Doom 3 was successfully run on a Voodoo 2 (it looked like shit though).
I guess what I'm saying is that this does nothing to indicate the power of the revolution but who cares since great games can be made on systems of different performance capabilities.
The nice thing about the Unreal engine is it has such great developer tools so if anything this speaks more about the quality of the game as opposed to the specs of the revolution.

Considering Nintendo is modest regarding their estimations, and Sony wildly exaggerates theirs, they might be closer than most gaming enthusiasts guess.

I'm sure Epic will get as much of UE3 running on the Rev as possible.

I want a Revolution. I think.

Keep in mind that engines like Unreal support shaders that are designed by the content creators.
So yes the engine can run on any system but the artists might have to limit what shaders can be run, etc.
These engines are so flexible these days...you could easily use the Unreal 3 engine for a game that has a mere thousand polygons and uses very little shaders.
The presence of an engine alone does nothing to indicate the performance of a system. Lets see the game and what features it was able to take advantage of first.

For all the talk of it being highly scalable, we don't even know the Revolution's specs to determine how 'scaled-down' it would have to be. Just that it's not going to be as strong as three 3Ghz processors. What's the rumor? Two 2.xGhz?

Sweet Jesus, this is rather unexpectedly upbeat news for the Revolution. I still won't buy one though - Nintendo consoles are for babies and those who don't appreaciate gameplay depth.

I can confirm that, in fact, it does taste like vanilla ice cream.

I'd be willing to give up some extra particles, light blooms or lens flares if it meant playing a kick-ass FPS on the Nintendo Revolution controller.

Well, that was a BOLD statement!
I apologize. :o

Ehh, I just worry that being a multiplatform game they really don't put much effort into actually utilizing it. I've no doubt it'll technically work on all 3, but I'd bet the content will be designed for the lowest common denominator gameplay wise, and it'll be a poor representation of what a shooter made for the revolution can do.

Well, at the end of the day it is Midway we're talking about here. I'm not expecting any miracles regardless of the platform.... :(

But, as LA Rush and NBA Ballers show, Midway are leaders in Bling Insertion Technology. What more do you want?

I thought you only dealt with ice cream, Mr. Flavas?
Since when do jelly or syrup belong anywhere near anyone's salad?

I would be surprised if this engine didn't run on the Revolution. I bet it will look very good too.
Even if the Revolution is half as powerful as the other next gen systems, I suspect it will still be able to run an engine like this and have great looking games. The big limitation for the next gen is mostly going to be bringing to bear the massive amounts of manpower required to make all that damned high resolution art that is going to be required. The days of horsepower limitations are almost over. Could developers use MORE Horsepower? OF COURSE THEY COULD. They can ALWAYS use MORE. But the number of things that will still actually remain impossible due to hardware will now officially be very very small. The bigger problem will just be getting the damned games made at a reasonable cost. My bet is that whoever innovates the best in this cost of production category will win the most ground.
