Xboxic (http://www.xboxic.com/news/88) reports:
An inside source at Microsoft informed us that Microsoft is currently finishing off one huge update for the Xbox 360 that is going to put an end to all the common problems in both games and the system itself. It will contain fixes for all currently known lockups in games, missing or impossible to get achievements and a bunch of new functionality in the Dashboard.
Full story (http://www.xboxic.com/news/88)
I've yet to discover any problems, but this is still good news for us X360 users.
Pureboy also submitted the same story with the following additional information, courtesy of Engadget (http://www.engadget.com)
...it's being rumored that Microsoft is getting ready to release a big update for Dashboard to squish a bunch of system and game bugs, and to bring support for a camera accessory which will supposedly be released simultaneously with the update.

Boy, I sure do love how that's worded..
...going to put an end to all the common problems in both games and the system itself.
All the problems? Methinks they overstate a bit, no?

Updates like this are one of the reasons they reserved 7gb of the HDD. I haven't had any problems either but I do wish they would allow you to download demos/files and play something at the same time. It would be cool if they added that in this update.

I'm pretty sure the website is supposed to be Engadget, not EnDgadget - both the URL and the link title is wrong.

It's impossible to get the Online Professional achievement in Project Gotham 3. Hopefully that will get fixed.

Yes I too hope they allow us to download and do something else at the same time too. Seems like a major oversight in the way the system works now.

I agree. It's been YEARS since I haven't been able to multitask while downloading.

Methinks that points to this being a rumor and not a statement from MS.

heh. Xbox360 SP1?Yea... first we had games that were shipped incomplete and patched by live. Now they are shipping the *system* with flaws? And you're paying what $400 + $60 for games?

The reserved space on the Xbox 360 HDD consists of a few multi-gigabyte cache partitions that are actually only usable for games (runtime cache).
The rest of the drive is completely available to saved games, downloaded content, updates, music, photos, etc.

Microsoft + Patches = Trouble
I guess it wouldn't have been feasible to actually have enough units and all these issues resolved beofre launching the thing, huh? Well, thank god its enough like a PC that they can patch it. Kinda sucks if you aren't paying them for the Live service, though.
Leave it to them to let the general public do the beta testing. At least they had an excuse with PC, being all in different configurations. What's the excuse this time?

Thank you for downloading service pack 1 for your XBox 360. This patch fixes every known problem both in software and hardware while quadrupling the performance of the Xenon GPU.
Unfortunately service pack 1 is not compatible with triple core cpu's at this time.
You will recieve an update CD in the mail 6-8 weeks after service pack 1.2 is released with instuctions on how to install.
Please do not power up system until you recieve instructions or the triple core cpu will go criticle imploding in on itself consuming everything in a three block radius then exploding killing everything within 5 miles.
(if you live in Utah or Rhode Island the last paragraph does not apply to you :D )
Thank you for choosing Microsoft and have a nice day.
System will shut downin 15..14....13....12
The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.

Live silver service is free, what customers pay for is just the ability to play games.
I feel in no way like I beta tested anything. My 360 and the 360's of all my friends and aquaintances(spelling?) have been running flawlessly both in hardware and software. I am not saying their were no issues because we all know there were but they really were not that serious and this will be more of an update than a patch.

I have not had any problems, but the marketplace could use an update to make it easier to browse stuff. Right now there is so much stuff you can buy that it just is a long boring list you need to browse through. Some subdivisions and maybe a small search engine would do nicely, especially if MS wants to expand the marketplace.

I’m with the detractors, it’s terrible that they can upgrade their system, improve its interface and add more functionality after it has shipped. I can’t wait till the PS3 comes out because at least I know it will not gain any new features for the next 6 years and any bug will be rightly called a feature  (if they're smart they'll allow their machine to be updated too).
In other news there’s a Full Auto demo up on Live Arcade, not sure if this was reported or not.
The biggest two upgrades that the 360 needs is the ability to do stuff while downloading other than switch to my computer and write this post. And an improvement to the Marketplace interface so that it’s not completely swamped with EA’s 200 sports game backgrounds and gamer pics.

This is hilarious. Are you serious?
The dashboard updates are something MS can do to kill a few bugs and add more functionality. None of us have been beta testers for anything.
I've had no problems with the dashboard or games. If there is a bug i'm not aware of it.
Fingers crossed you will be able to download and play a arcade game whilst doing so.

Just as a side note. The dashboard is and will always be an evolving piece of work. MS wants it that way... that was even the case with XBox1 dashboard. The whole idea is to expand and tweak it during the life cycle of the console, so I wouldn't cry faul too quickly.

The rest of the drive is completely available to saved games, downloaded content, updates, music, photos, etc.
I was referring an article IGN posted:
Some space on the HDD is set aside to increase overall system functionality, including things like the Xbox emulator to enable backwards compatibility and console and title updates to allow for continued innovation and expansion of the console experience.
An early version of the emulator that supports Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 offline is included on Xbox 360 Hard Drives right out of the box as a special bonus to devoted fans of the franchise. However, to play Halo 2 online, or to play any other titles on the launch list, the full emulator update is required.
That update along with future updates are some of the reasons why Microsoft set aside that extra space on the HDD.

Yeah, I mean, why patch when we can release a whole NEW console that is even smaller removes a couple of features that no one uses anyway, and add neat things like infra red ports, and fix some of the DVD playing compatibility problems?

Bitch all you want about ***, their software, and their patches. The PSP has done this 3 times already, and were revered as "Updates" even though the first update was in fact a patch. The main focus of the update was planned to upgrade the dashboard and add the functionality for a camera, that patches are being thrown in because they'll be easier to distribute that way.

Thank you! Finally someone admits that Sony has updated their consoles and portable gaming devices many times over.
Was the PS2 perfect upon initial release? Heck no.

The PS2 had lots of different software versions that came with different hardware versions. They even added Progressive scan support for DVDs.

I love your smart ass comments, especially when they mean nothing. But I guess someone had to start the fanboy war so you were selected by the assgods, congrats.
moving on
The bugs are more with fixing errors between games and consoles such as achievements, inviting people to certain games, and setting up multiplayers games. I too hate the fact the something that is wrong can be fixed with a patch, that is too horrible

Newsflash: Nobody is perfect. After two months of very extensive product testing, Microsoft is probably just implementing customer feedback changes, updates for future products (like the camera), and minor bug fixes. For anyone who actually OWNS a 360, myself included, I'm sure they appreciate the ongoing support.

I haven't needed ***'s support. But then again this system was released with so many issues, including I believe what was stated as an "un-finished" or "incomplete" product I just must be that stupid to not notice my 360 doesn't work right?

If you didn't get the core. Shoot I forgot about that marketing genius idea too. What? The core supports upgrades and additional content, and supports a live Silver (or Gold) account. You just don't have as much space. But I would assume that any dash update will overwrite the dash that's already there, so it wouldn't even take up space on the memory card.

IGN doesn't know what they're talking about in this case. They are completely making it up.

You are correct. System updates don't require a memory card or HDD.
However, game updates do.
