Dialing the hype meter up to 11, 20th Century Fox and James Cameron have announced an 'Avatar Day' of August 21st, which is the launch day for the first trailer for Cameron's Avatar movie.

On August 21, the world will get its first look at director James Cameron’s motion picture epic AVATAR, when Twentieth Century Fox and Cameron debut the film’s trailer everywhere – while select cinemas and IMAX theaters will screen extended footage prepared by the renowned filmmaker for this global “Avatar Day” event.

The worldwide trailer launch will be presented in all formats, including IMAX 3-D, IMAX 2-D, digital 3-D, digital 2-D, and 35mm 2-D. The trailer will also be available online.

The extended look at AVATAR will unspool only on August 21 – and only in 3-D – in select theaters and IMAX. Details on locations and reserving tickets for this extraordinary and unprecedented experience will be announced soon.

In addition on the 21st, Ubisoft will unveil the trailer for their videogame James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, and Mattel will reveal the action figures for the film’s Avatar and alien Na’vi characters.

AVATAR takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

AVATAR opens in theaters everywhere December 18, 2009.

The only Avatar that counts is the Evil Avatar.

I'm pretty sure Aang could beat up Evil Avatar.

I don't know. Evil has definite training under his belt. Plus he runs this site we all know & love and wields a mighty ban-hammer. I must side with EA.

This movie is sounded spectacular. Can't wait to finally see some footage! And I'm interested in how well the game will turn out.

Similar to most 'movie' games? The three released screenshots look nice, but usually movie games suck.

Uh, guys?

James Cameron's AVATAR is NOT Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Two TOTALLY different things, lol.

The problem with projects like this is the directors have gotten so big, they won't listen to and people are afraid to offer criticism. Just look at the latest Star Wars movies. They could have been good with some decent editing. Look at Harry Potter, same thing, author gets successful and doesn't listen to the editors any more.

I have a feeling Avatar's going to be the same way.

I'll give a specific example, "Aliens". The original is far superior to the director's cut.

Meh, I don't know about that. I mean, these guys still have to report to whoever is funding them, so there is a check and balance system there. The catch is, they've made so much money in that past or have been so wildly successful that they've earned more respect and trust to do what they want. I like that, as it's just a reward for doing well. I do agree, however, that the director's should understand your point and attempt to adhere to good editing.

"where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love"

Somewhere a kitten dies.

Why ruin a perfectly good movie by putting a love story in it? Hollywood seems to do it with war movies a lot too. However I do know that the point is to get as many different demographics in the theatre as possible, but sometimes I wish they wouldnt do it as it seems to take away from the film in my opinion.

Well they have to keep the ladies who loved the Titanic film happy.

I am interested in seeing a trailer to this film, but I'm not really looking forward to it. Cameron is one of the most overrated directors.
