View Full Version : Iron Man 2 Details
The folks at Entertainment Weekly have posted an early peak of their cover story (http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/07/this-weeks-cover-iron-man-2.html) for the upcoming sequel to 2008's Iron Man. It's mostly casting details, but a few plot points slip through the copy.
When Marvel Studios first announced the sequel, no one was sure what the movie would be about. Downey, director Jon Favreau, screenwriter Justin Theroux, and the rest of the creative team struck upon the idea of introducing two very different foes for Stark. On one side is Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), a fast-talking weapons manufacturer who fancies himself the next Tony Stark; on the other, Vanko, who, while incarcerated in a Russian prison, creates his own battle-suit, which shoots devastating, whip-like beams. Hammer and Whiplash join forces to take down Downey’s character, Tony Stark.
Enjoyed the first one, but didn't go in expecting much. I wonder if the sequel will be a victim of the previous film's success.

I'm 50/50 on this film being any good, I'm expecting some bad things... but I enjoyed the first so much.

I did like the first one a lot, which will definitely make a difference when I go to see the second.
I thought the Mandarin was supposed to be a villain?
A shot of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow (http://thesuperficial.com//bfm_gallery/2009/07/0716%20ScarJo%20Black%20Widow/gallery_enlarged/gallery_enlarged-0716_scarjo_blackwidow_00.jpg) has recently popped up, though. And she looks goooood.

“I told Favreau, ‘I don’t want to just play him as a one-dimensional p—-,’” he says. “He let me have a cockatoo, who I talk to and get drunk with while I’m making my suit.” (http://filmdrunk.uproxx.com/2009/07/mickey-rourke-iron-man-cockatoo)

I think Iron Man is the best superhero movie made and I was blown away by how fun and actionpacked the first was. And Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is perfect. Can't wait for the second.

My wife was quite broken-hearted when she heard Terrence Howard wouldn't be back.

I think Iron Man worked becuse of how fast it was and because of how loose and effortless Downy's acting is.
Other superhero films get so up their own butts trying to get you to feel something and Downy does so much of that work himself that it frees the audience up to just watch and enjoy.
I think the sequel will work if they just let the characters play in the already established Marvel universe. We don't need to waste precious time on the rise of trite villians. We just need to see a problem, and how Iron Man is going to solve it.

Why would you assume this movie would be "a victim" of anything? The first movie was a blast and it is being made by all the same people. I expect it to be much the same. Ironman does not have to be Lord of the Rings. It just has to be a decent story and bunch of explosions. Everyone wins.

Robert Downey Jr. really made IronMan in my opinion a good movie. When I saw Downey in the role he "was" Ironman. he acted like I think Ironman would act and his personality just made the movie. Take that away and it was a generic hero beats up villain movie. Same thing with Batman the actors really made that movie(s).
If they let Downey act the role the same way again it will be a success, if they try to change that, then I see the movie failing.

It seemed that between this, the Hulk reboot, Wolverine spin-off, etc, that Marvel was throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. Iron Man was one of many projects.
The EW article talks about a whole new set of "invisible eyes" associated with the project, likely referring to big execs, who simply weren't very invested in the first movie. Once you get too many people involved, in my opinion, you get something like a goth/emo Peter Parker doing a swing dance routine for no reason. Hence my fears that the Iron Man movie franchise could be a victim of its own success.
But on the whole - I agree - it's hard to screw up a movie that propels its self on explosions and shiny robotic armor. Still, Hollywood has managed to ruin simpler formulas in the past.

Does Ironman fight other Ironmen in every comic book? I'm just curious. This seems kind of "done", but if they were staying true to comics, I guess it makes sense.

I am curious why writers so often feel that they need TWO villains, especially in the sequels. To me, it is disappointing news but I will wait to see what they do with it.
Iron Man is my favorite "Superhero" movie of all time. I think I saw it in the theater 4 times last summer. It is one of the few in which the superhero is actually the star of the show. I didn't realize that Terrence Howard wouldn't be in the sequel. That is too bad. He worked well with Downey Jr.

Directly Marvel has only done two movie projects, Iron Man and the last Hulk.
Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man were outsourced to other movie studios such as Sony and Fox where Marvel had very little involvement.

Well I loved the first one, and I'm sure Ill love this one.
I just hope it follows the great superhero movie sequels, and gives us an even better movie then the original.

Why the hell does Scarlett Johansson have to be in EVERY DAMN MOVIE? She's so boring, acting and looks.

Completely agree with you, hope she does it okay in this movie though and that Gwynyth Paltrow gets to slap her.
