I was anxiously waiting to try the open beta for HOMM V that was supposed to be launched today.

The open beta for Heroes V has been delayed, to make the experience as smooth as possible for all those involved. Keep an eye out for a new beta launch date, and all the news that goes with it.
There is more text on the french version (http://www.mightandmagic.com/fr/) of the site. It basically says the same thing with a bit more soul (translation by myself).

It has been decided to report the launch of the open beta for Heroes of Might and Magic V. A communication on the new launch date will be published at a later time.

We found that the beta provided would not have been satisfying, and to be able to show a better product, it has been decided to postpone the launch. The whole team is working on finishing as soon as possible with the best quality possible the last tweaks on this open beta.

We're sorry of all the hopes that were created today. We wish you will understand the reason of this decision is to better satisfy the community.

Again, we're sorry.

I really really really wanted to hop into this open beta but the delay is proably for the best. Even though I've already seen it in action and think its exellent, theres no game that couldent use a little more polish.

I started with only the demo of HOMM2, and 1000 playthroughs later I decided I loved the series. Got 3 when it came out and loved it even more. Got 4, and played it about an hour tops.

I didn't like the way you fought, or the fog of war, the way you assigned groups of enemies and didn't need a hero. I really miss the old feel of the games. Here's hoping they bring it back.

Here's hoping to a better product for the delay.

I'm never against delaying something to make it better.

Quoted for truth. Better to wait until its good enough to show off to the public as opposed to trying to fix it while opinions are already being formulated, a la Dungeons & Dragons Online.

Five is supposed to be much more like three and two than like four. The only major difference is that it will be in full 3D. But no heroes fighting or anything like that, I don't think.

I love this series and really hope they're able to keep up its turn-based strategy pedigree with this entry. I'll definitely be checking out open beta as soon as its available.

Apparently, they don't have the rights to reuse the old heroes.
Most of the names and faces belonged to people working on the previous HOMM.

I'll miss you Solmyr!

That's so confusing, though. You'd think if they bought the rights to the game, they'd have got the rights to all the names involved with it. And most of those names were just cliche fantasy names anyways!

According to a posting today on the UK site the new beta date is Monday!
Now pardon me while I start counting the seconds....

Actually incorrect, they have all the rights and everyhing. Its just the fact that the story in HOMM4 is so fucked up they decided to just scrap it, I wouldent be supprised if we saw a HOMM3/2 Mod for 5.

Ah. good. The info I had was from an old interview, giving the emphasis on the fact that Christian was one of the actual game designers, and Crag Hack was the alter ego of JVC.

Let's say you work for a game company and one of the special ops is named "Nameback". When you leave, you'd like that identity to stay with you, not the game. I guess this is what was happening initially.
