I noticed this article on Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/18/leaked-oblivion-screens-whet-the-appetite/) that apparently some screenshots for Oblivion were leaked and then yanked, but someone was a little too quick on the "save picture as" for the moderators.
A pile of unofficial Oblivion screenshots briefly appeared on at least one Internet forum, and Gaming-360 was lucky enough to snag the link before moderators removed it. The 26 images are not the sharpest we've seen, but they expose some details about the menu interface, as well as show off a few of the game's locales and Bethesda's impressive character design.
Looking at those images, if the animation is smooth, this might be the one that makes my jaw hit the floor. I am really looking forward to something I want to play on the 360 besides Live Arcade games.
Are you guys seeing the same shots I'm seeing?!!? It looks like POO! It looks very Unreal/Unreal-2 at best. Someone take the colored-light tool away from whoever's doing the lighting on the interiors, because it looks like some Unreal mod level designer's spluge-fest!
Seriously, it looks like crap. The outdoors stuff looks good, but the indoors stuff is just dreadful.

I've seen this game in motion and it looks amazing. They said these weren't the best quality images and they're not. But they do give you a good idea for the atmosphere of the game.
Why can't it be March already??? (and Oblivion not be delayed again past that)

I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a end of generation so I look pimp Xbox title at best. Maybe rein is right and the animation sets it apart. But right now, not impressed at all.

Did you guys see the E3 video for this? It easily has the best graphics of any real time rendered game I have ever seen.
Of course, it is pointless to focus on graphics on this title. The graphics are just added fluff to the awesome game.
Complaining about leaked images is like complaining about leaked alpha "demos". This on top of what Stooby said.
STFU.

good find, even though they were low quality compressed shots, they do give a good idea of what's in store.

I'm really looking forward to this game. So far I've been more than happy with all the great stuff in Live but on the games front I feel like the 360 has been lacking a bit. I have PD0, PGR3 and Kameo and all of them are good games but nothing has really stood out from the bunch as a great, must have, game.

These look like crap.
I like sony. Blah blah blah rinse repeat.

Then you should not have released them.
Oh wait...

They dont look as good as they should. The lighting seems really really off. Outside looks damn good though. I doubt the animation will be spectacular since they slid down the stairs in the E3 video...

The quality of those screenshots is so poor that I'm not going to make any judgments.

A lot of those shots are from a leaked russian version that was very "code light" and designed only for localization purposes.
The ones from PC Gamer and Game Informer are the ones that are designed to impress and represent. If I remember this page you all are talking about (which I saw yesterday) be sure to look for the PC Gamer and Game Informer header.

umm from the official movies that were released for Oblivion, animation was not its strong suit.
Infact teh animations looked terrible in the movies I saw, jerky keyframe stuff.
Now Im still hawt about the game but not for the animations.

I think these screens look great. This game will probably be the most beautiful yet made -- IF they clean up the animations
They look bad, but thats only the compression.
The effects are somewhat visible and they are truly advanced.
Did you guys even see the amazing videos? Oblivion is cutting edge graphics / physics and you say it looks like poo? Please get some perspective and respect.
Even if the graphics were less impressive I would buy it. Bethesda is really good at making RPG's and on top of that they make impressive graphics to go along. They are masters of what they do building on years of experience. Nobody does the job better and its silly when some forum wannabe judge them. It is leaked lowres images!! For gods sake.
Go complain about a game that really deserve it.

I think these screens look great too. I love how the entire obsessed gamer community sees a few unreal engine 3 tech demos and then dismisses everything else they see that doesnt match up to be crap. I for one love the coloured lighting indoors, just as I love the bloomy colored shaders in World Of Warcraft. I dont think the makers of Oblivion are trying to make the most photorealistic game ever here. I have a feeling they are going for a semi-realistic highly detailed but with a fantasy glow and feeling to it and thats perfectly fine for me. When I look at a game that tries to be photorealistic I often am impressed by the technical detail but I often prefer games that have artistic styles that are worth remembering. (that being said some UE3 games look artiscically amazing too like Gears of War for example)
Either way, even if the animations dont win any film festival awards this is a massive massive step forward from Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind. The fact that the NPCs wont be text pages in the same sense and that the world will feel a little less like an empty MMO this time and a little more like a living breathing world on its own (the new AI) and that the combat might actually be more fun will definetly make this game worth buying. Im glad they are going for a realistic yet fantasy bloomy look rather than being the same game with those effects simply turned off because i think it sets the mood or tone to the environment and it fits perfectly with the mythical theme.

All Y'all non RPG dickheads need to STFU... the real elder scrolls fans buy this game for the fucking gameplay, not the graphics.....
The whole openended sand box thing, the dungeons, the AI!

Frankly, the graphics are far more than enough to satisfy, but I just hope they address the real issues of Morrowind like the shitty combat model and difficulty. Every character you played in Morrowind was a god by level 11.
The combat in Morrowind sucked badly also. It's amazing to think that a tiny indy developer can make an intersting and addicting combat AND mounted combat engine work like in Mount & Blade, but a giant dev house like Bethesda can screw it up so bad in a big budget game like Morrowind.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Morrowind, and am a huge fan of Bethesda, but these issues kept Morrowind from becoming epic instead of just excellent IMHO.
That being said, I will purchase Oblivion on day one, because I have some hope Bethesda can and will pull it off and make some serious improvements. Plus, combat model aside, they really do a lot of things exceptionally well, like mod support, and their world editor. Extra features like this, that most developers never even think to include, are what make Bethesda stand far and above the competition.
edit: Buying Oblivion, not Obsidian :)

While waiting for this game I've been playing Gothic 2 and must say that I have lost some of the interest in Oblivion, and I'm a little more excited about Gothic 3 now. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to get both, but I think Gothic 3 will have a better story and have a richer adventure. Oblivions graphic are awesome, but I am afraid that it will feel empty and lifeless like it did in Morrowind. Gothic 2 vs Morrowind = Gothic 2 for sure now and I use to be a huge morrowind fan too.

GoblinToe, thanks for the mention of Mount & Blade, I checked it out and it seems right up my alley! :) Cheers!

That's teh funny. Your buying the company that made KOTOR2 and NWN2?

Load times bothered me more than anything else in Morrowind.. of course I only played on xbox.. You could seriously go cook dinner while loading. I've had Oblivion pre-ordered for months now and can't wait to get it.

Damn I missed these. Anyone have a mirror or a zip file of 'em they can send to an email addy?
Funny how people can make allowances for something they really like.
I personally have no alliegance to any platform and I think it's STUPID to have such, since Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo don't pay me, I actually PAY THEM by buying games. I own ALL (and I do mean, ALL) systems and judge by the game, not the system it's on, so don't throw your fanboi BS on me.
I also know what it takes to make a normal map, texture, light and construct something, including well-composed screenshots and these aren't them.
Like I said before, the outside stuff looks good, but the interior stuff looks like crap. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. You can have yours, that's why freedom is all about. :D

I think the interior shots will look amazing when I see them. Take a look at that shot that has the camera angle shooting down from the top of the circular stone stairs. Looks fantastic to me, even at such a small resolution.

I can't remember who said it way back when, but "Bloomerific" seems to be the best word to describe these screenshots.
Still, I liked the first one, and it wasn't the graphics that made the game for me. so if this has graphics that can at all compete, I'll probably pick it up.

Goblintoe, you are my new god. I'd never heard of Mount and Blade, and already I can't stop playing it. Damn, this game rocks.

While waiting for this game I've been playing Gothic 2
I've been doing the same. It definately fills the expansive RPG (not in the mood for a JRPG) void I'm feeling right now. The graphics aren't amazing, but they get the job done. The game design is a little rough, and the controls are funky, but once I got into it, I was addicted. I especially like the large world without the constant loading.
That said, I'm still more excited to play Oblivion than Gothic 3, probably because I've been looking forward to it for so long. But I'll be picking up both titles the day each is released.

Interiors look horrible? I recommend you download the 1 GB DVD iso and watch that.
There's one scene in an cell with amazing looking walls and dangling chains casting realistic shadows. Very cool.

At the very least, these screens give me hope that they finished skinning the Argonians, my favorite race.

I agree 110% with you. The most frustrating thing i found about Morrowind was spending 10 minutes to kill one damn mouse. But i hear that they have improved the combat heaps... aparently.

did anyone see the screenies of fzero 64? They looked like hell, but that game had easily some of the most impressive graphics of any of the N64's line up, and on top of that, it was fun as hell. I don't think bethseda, witholding any disney tie in's, would ever lead us wrong, they are the new rare, well, back when they were good.

That was a 10 month old version?
I hope it is, as if that was a leak of this moths build, there is still a long way to go. The faces look butt ugly still, and I don't mean in a "ugly girl" way, I mean in a "Lol, GoldenEye 64" way.

the thing that scares me most about these screenshots is the journal. are they going to completely forget to add a guildwars-like quest log again?
PIPBoy3000

I heard the journal got a major overhaul. I suspect you can look at it chronologically (which basically sucks in my opinion) or a nicer "to do" list of quests, perhaps arranged by major/minor status.
