Apparently a more official announcement is coming soon(ish), but in any case, looks like a new installment of Mechwarrior is FINALLY in the damned offing. A new, very short video showcases a robotic foot which would appear to mirror the Mechwarrior style of mech design.
It better be for the PC! I honestly loved the MechAssault games, but they were NOT Mechwarrior games.

Well I believe Smith & Tinker currently holds the license for the Mechwarrior franchise aren't they? Yet the link to the other videos says 'Piranha Games'.
Smith and tinker are holders but have to outsouce almost all their work....

I like the fact that the IGN link mentioned "rock your computer." To me, that really screams Mechwarrior V, which would be all kinds of awesome. Mechwarrior 2 was the first 3d accelerator game I ever got, and it hooked me on the series for life. Mechwarrior V would make me all kinds of happy.

Sure there'll be a PC version, but if they want to make money there'll be console versions too. ;)

Does anyone recognize the mech in that third clip? I won't be satisfied till I see an Atlas or some other iconic mech.

It's a Mauler I think. Atlas, pft, the iconic mech is the Timber Wolf :)
the current idea is the ign video is a Stylized jenner.
Well the icon mech depends on what year you want to go with the iconic mech:
Mid to late 80s the warhammer Orginal version
The early to late 90s was the Timber wolf
The Late 90s till 2 years ago The atlas
Current is the Reseen Battlemaster

Whoops, sorry the Mauler is in the second clip.
uhh that looks more like a jager mech but hey what do i know:)
Third mech could also be a cicada but the jenner fits the best with whats happeneing in the video

Listen up you medieval screwheads, Mechwarrior is a SIMULATION, not an ARCADE GAME.
You enter your COCKPIT and PILOT YOUR MECH. You do not park your ass on the sofa and diddle around with your little controller. You use your Stick and throttle and RUDDER PEDALS to NAVIGATE IN A REAL 3D WORLD.
THEY BETTER NOT SCREW THIS UP.
I'm sick of console crap ruining PC GAMING.

OH HELL YES! I might even have to buy a new gaming PC for this. DAMN I have done so well, hopefully it wont come out until next year.
I mainly game on the consoles now, but a true Mechwarrior game almost requires a PC, maybe if they do a STEEL BATTALION type controller it would be good on consoles.

That was how long ago? And they haven't done anything remotely like it for this gen. Console devs seem to have no interest in doing things that are too simmish. If Steel Battalion had become a franchise, and if they'd have kept releasing hardware like that, I'd be with you.
To be honest, PC simming is in the toilet right now, especially space/sci-fi sims. It's time for a motherfucking resurgence!

They forget to put universe immersion in Steel Battalion. And actually for PC Mechwarrior you only need a cheap joystick to complement the kb + m and doesn't look that nerdy.

Uh... it's even worse than that. I noticed recently that the term "sim" has been stolen and used to refer to management games, like SimCity, The Sims, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc. When did that happen?!?
Anyway, you want real sims, go to www.simhq.com. Oh, and while you are there, take a look at DCS: Black Shark. Now that is one hardcore sim.
And I have a Saitek X52 Pro stick just waiting for MW5. Bring it on!

OH gods yes! Time to hit up my old Vulture/Mad Dog variants again! I doubt they'll have it, but I'd love to see the old Warhammer 2c in again too. Slow, but decently armored and easily modded.
I'm sure Microsoft made sure that there will only be one console it will hit if it migrates over from the PC.

Microsoft no longer has the rights to it, if I understand correctly.

I believe the Warhammer (and variants) fall under the "unseen" category (i.e. copyright violation) and will presumably never appear again. I think the games before MW3 included "unseen" models. But there might be recent changes as well (news to me!)... see below:
FASA, the company that produced BattleTech, sued Playmates for trademark infringement for using several mecha designs that FASA developed for their battletech game for their ExoSquad toyline. The resulting counter suit from Playmates targeted mecha images taken from Macross and other anime series used in Battletech. The related lawsuits were settled and later products of BattleTech do not use the designs, henceforth known as the "unseen", under contention. In the Japanese edition of BattleTech, all of these designs were redesigned by Studio Nue, creator of Macross. On 24 June 2009, Catalyst Game Labs, the current license holders, announced that they had secured the rights to the "unseen" pictures; as a result, art depicting the original 'Mechs (which have been called the "bedrock" of BattleTech) can be used again.

I so badly want a new serious Mechwarrior game. I also really want it on the consoles. 4 bidirectional analogs, 2 unidirectional analogs and 12+ digital inputs should be enough for a good developer to make it work just fine.
It's not the difference of input that made Mech Assault an arcade like game. It was the game design; the way the mechs moved, how the control was implemented, their sense of weight, scale and mass. Chrome hounds, while flawed, showed me that a serious Mechwarrior game was possible on the consoles.
Not only do I want to see it done right on the consoles, I think it is needed. A kick ass space sim wouldn't hurt either to try and bring these dieing genres back to life.
I miss my Mad Cat.
Now if an arcade mech game is wanted then Activision could always resurrect Heavy Gear.
EDIT: I just read the list of games that the developer has made. Not very promising.

To be honest I would prefer a MechAssault game. A current gen Mech game, with a really good online component could be incredible.
But I have a great gaming rig, so Ill be able to play this either way.

In 2003 to replace that artwork they had done a redo on all the unseens to get new artwokr for them called project phoenix...

Huzzah! It's nice to see the Battletech/Mechwarrior IP back in the hands of people who care about it. Classic Battletech seems to be going strong on the tabletop side and hopefully this can mean a resurrection of the franchise on the video game side. There certainly is a void of western style mech sims in the market. One thing I'd like to see is Mech models that accurately reflect the armaments of custom designs. It seems thike it would be easy enough to do for omnimechs at least. A robust online offering would be nice as well but balance seems like it would be problematic (see Chromehounds). Perhaps they could offer a "restricted" mode with only premade designs for those who want balance and an "open" mode for those who want freedom to play around and optimize their custom designs.

Is fasa involved at all? I'd like it to go back to it's roots personally.
Fasas dead and has been for almost 10 years. I believe they might still exist out there in a PO box somewhere as a IP holder to license out Earthdawn, but not to sure. CGL is the one who does the tabletop stuff now and they are basically owned by loren coleman you know the guy who took over the spine novels for btech after Stackpole stopped
If you mean fasa interactive im not sure. They closed up when shadowrun came out for pc/360

Jordan Weisman, founder of FASA, heads up Smith & Tinker and appears to have contracted out most of the work to Piranha. So he's supervising in some fashion. Piranha doesn't have much of a pedigree, but with Weisman involved, I'm optimistic.
Microsoft no longer has the rights to it, if I understand correctly.
Microsoft still owns it. Smith and Tinker just licensed it from them. It's stated on their site about that. The IP still belongs to MS.

Personally I've always preferred Armored Core's vision of mech combat compared to the iconic and much more 'western' Mechwarrior.

You are in luck, as there seems to be no end to the AC series and other games with similar mechs. The MW style is much more interesting to me, and rarer (Front Mission and Chromehounds are pretty close). Mechs shouldn't have hands and fly! :)

Piranha Bytes? because if it's those euro jackholes then mechwarrior is doomed.

Also, the date at the beginning seems to indicate that game is set in 3015 which is during the Third Succession War and thus pre-Clan Invasion. If that's correct then it means Omni-Mechs wouldn't be present in the campaign and many of the designs people are familiar with from the later games would be absent as well.
