Last night I was watching a movie on my PS3 (Robocop 2) and it turned off on me.

There were no beeps or anything, it just turned off (like the power was cut from it). My power did not go out as the lights in the room and the TV both remained on.

First thing I did was try to turn it back on. Then I toggled the switch in the back and tried to turn it on again. Still nothing.

I moved it into the living room where my wife's PS3 is plugged in. My PS3 doesn't work using her cables either.

I've search on some forums and the only cases I can find where the PS3 turned off on people, was overheating. In those cases, the owners hear 3 beeps before the system turns off. Also, they are able to turn their systems back on (though they sometimes turn off again quickly - again with 3 beeps).

My system doesn't do anything. I don't hear any fans spinning, there are no lights on. It's simply dead.

Has anyone heard of something like this happening? I know that I can give Sony a call but it's a 60GB system (purchased March 07) so it's out of warranty.

I've let it sit unplugged for about 14 hours or so now and it gives doesn't do anything when I try to turn it on.

Lots of stuff in the same socket without a surge protector? Could have fried the insides quicker than the thing could beep.

Tried doing a reset switch on? You know, the 10 second holding the power button startup that sets everything back to factory settings? Worth a try but if you're getting nothing then I can't see it working.

What I've noticed is my PS3 makes way more noise if it is being used as a movie player than when it plays games. It's still nice and quiet in comparison to the 360 and even the Wii but it doesn't seem to like it as much. You can't run in-game XMB in-movie, so to speak. It's the main player in my living room so it gets used a lot but, up until recently, the Scottish weather keeps all electronics nice and cool.

Not saying the two are connected - just an observation. A repair would probably cost you as much as a replacement, you could hold off until a bundle you like comes along.

Unfortunately nothing happened when I tried holding down the power button to reset the console. It's dead.

I called Sony last night and I am getting it repaired (or replaced with a refurbished machine if it cannot be repaired) for $190 CAD (taxes included).

Obviously I'd rather not pay anything to fix it but since it's more than 1 year out of warranty, I did it. At least it's cheaper than buying a new PS3. Plus I am guaranteed to get a 60GB model back. I would hate to have lost the backwards compatibility.

I was even told that they would make sure I get my DVD back (since it's stuck in the drive).

We'll see how things go but at this point I'm fairly happy. It could have been a lot worse.
