gamesindustry.biz is reporting (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/the-pirate-bay-acquired-for-USD7-8-million) that popular torrent downloading site The Pirate Bay has been sold for a whopping $7.8 Million.

Global Gaming Factory X has acquired file-sharing site The Pirate Bay for SEK 60 million (USD 7.8 million).

Along with the purchase of file-sharing tech firm Peerialism, GGF intends to turn the website legitimate, offering compensation for copyright owners whose content is featured on the site.

"We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site," said Hans Pandeya, CEO of GGF

"The Pirate Bay is a site that is among the top 100 most visited internet sites in the world. However, in order to live on, The Pirate Bay requires a new business model, which satisfies the requirements and needs of all parties, content providers, broadband operators, end users, and the judiciary.

"Content creators and providers need to control their content and get paid for it. File-sharers need faster downloads and better quality," he added.

Who sez crime doesn't pay?

I don't think people will go to a site called "The Pirate Bay" to buy things.

Hey, this kinda reminds me of what happened with Napster! Ima go ahead and guess that their venture will not be a success. People don't feel some nebulous loyalty to a name or site (particularly under new management). They go there because shit is free. Once it's not free, most won't go there.

There goes Pirate Bay, as there is no chance that the entertainment industry will licence there intellectual property to them. I also do not think all the people who get stuff from there will suddenly start paying for it when they can all go to the other sites.

Good luck trying to convert people who surf to TPB to pay for stuff.
Right or wrong, the place built its name as a synonym for 'free shit'.

People who surf there expecting free and seeing price tags are going to be that much less likely to pull out their credit card.

This is absurd.
So if content providers are to be paid for their content getting downloaded.. does that mean they have to support said content? This is assuming people are still uploading the "goods"... gets pretty strange at that point.

I can't see this having any good effect on TPB.

RIP Pirate Bay a.k.a. RIP the Internet

This won't have any affect on anything. Clever programmers will figure out how to keep the files flowing. It's not like TPB actually hosted the files. It's not different than DRM. Where there's a will...

R.I.P. nothing, this happened with Napster, this happened with Limewire, it's happening with TPB, there will be another, there is always another ready to take its place.

Actually TPB didn't keep IP logs, which was one of the reasons they got so popular in the first place.

As for the purchase, I'm really curious to see how the hell they'll get their money back. Somehow I don't see them getting a ton of money from freeloaders as viable.

Nobody likes isohunt.com?

It's always the first place I visit when I want to download free, legal content using BitTorrent.

Just the other day I got over 2.4GB/s download speed on Bittorrent downloading Jaunty. I naturally got the .torrent from isohunt, it's the best website out there for torrents.

My favorites were Torrentspy, and Snarfit back in the day before they were shut down/sold out.

Also - surely this means they now have some of the money to pay the fines that will no doubt be lobbed at them?

I've never really understood the 'cause'. Like the guys that rip DVDs and put them online - does the internet really deserve that time and effort? I think not.

I never understand these sort of moves. Are they planning on making you pay for it and then using your traffic to distribute it to other people? Sounds like a great plan I bet lots of people fall for it.
