RPS (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/06/24/max-payne-3-baldys-death-gallery/) has the first 6 images of Rockstar's upcoming sequel, Max Payne 3. Max has left the comfort of gritty New York City and has headed to Brazil making the game look quite a bit different than the past. Head on over to RPS (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/06/24/max-payne-3-baldys-death-gallery/) to check out the shots.
Whoever said that Max Payne has turned into John McClaine, you appear to be right.

Mr Payne is older, twelve years older, and living in Brazil. He’s no longer a cop with nothing to lose, and instead is a bodyguard for a wealthy Sao Paulo family
So...Man on Fire ?

Sorry, this isn't a Max Payne game. This is crap. I'm probably the biggest fan of the first 2 Max Payne games on the planet and I wouldn't allow them to give me $50 to play this piece of crap ripoff. Might as well call it, "Generic Shooter X." It has nothing to do with Max Payne in the least and it's bullshit to even call it that to try to eek out more sales.
Shame on Rockstar for this crap. F'em.

Oh, God, I'm brazilian and... dunno what to say. Aside that I LOL'd at Max Payne in the friggin' FAVELAS, that is.

I have to agree...great film noir always understands that the settings itself is one of the characters, which is why it works. Max Payne always wanted to be noir, the first succeeding far better than the second in many respects. So far this looks like...nothing.

Max Payne has never possessed a shred of integrity as a series, nor have they produced anything new since the last hardware cycle. There's nothing they can really do wrong here.
Did anyone check the original Max Payne out because you were super excited about the story? Fuck no, you didn't. You wanted to shoot dudes in slow motion while falling through the air. The over-the-top cheeseball writing was a surpise and made the experience B-movie fun, but not enough to make me bitch over a stylistic switch.
What made Max Payne special when it was released was bullet-time. Do not even argue this, you are wrong.
What has made it memorable after the fact was the writing.

Actually I was pretty interested in the story-telling for Max Payne. I'd already had my share of acrobratic gunplay in Opera by that time, heh. Interesting claim about the integrity of the series though. Ah well, gamers these days.

Storytelling is more of a concern for me, and it can be a major factor in my deciding to pick a game up or to finish it once I do. I'm just saying, the story and writing might have helped make the first couple games, but let's not kid ourselves about the reason most people picked it up initially or what Max Payne (as a series) is really about.
I'm not about to bash the third installment until I see more and have a chance to play it. Besides, there's plenty of people fired up anyway.

The people defending this, are you looking at the same screen shots as us? This has NOTHING to do with max payne, this is GTA X, with max payne in the title.

So this is what the game equivalent of a straight-to-video sequel looks like.

Call me crazy, but I think most of you negative Nancy's in this thread just hate the new direction of Max Payne because it sounds a lot like MGS4's premise.
If you've actually read the feature story that Game Informer did this month on the title, there'd be no question that Rockstar is taking this title's quality very seriously, I don't see where all the hate is coming from other than typical unfounded internet rage due to injecting innovation.
Small wonder that EA gets away with selling "new installments" (aka "cosmetic updates") to their sports series at full-price each and every year. Why would any developer in their right minds try something new when gamers seem to want to string them up by the balls for trying something new?
Here's an idea, if you just want more of the same old Max Payne experience, might I suggest any number of unofficial patches to the first two PC titles? Me, I'll be living in the present looking forward to new times and new games, spank you veddy much.

Calling this 'innovation' is a bit much, don't you think ?

Okay, perhaps a better word is 'deviation'. Point is, Rockstar isn't content with making a 'safe' sequel which just brings more of the same. Only time will tell if it's a quality title, not how close to the original it looks/plays.

Might be funny if ends up being like GTA4, heh. Deviation is a tricky thing with sequels to a series, you can go so far and then you've lost the feel of the originals (see Ghost Recon or R6, heh - maybe Fallout too). I'm not exactly burning with excitement about this but I doubt it'll be total garbage.

The franchise is really, and exclusively, about the gameplay? Wouldn't that mean Halo Wars isn't really a Halo game?
I'm not saying this game will be bad, but it's just pretty obviously not a Max Payne game. Different setting, different atmosphere, different character, etc. So it'll have bullet-time - so did Stranglehold.
So I guess a more succint question is: what makes this Max Payne 3 and not Strangehold 2?

The people who own the name. :P
I don't really get your point. Lots of things are similar, genre, gameplay-wise, etc. What makes Call of Duty not Brothers in Arms or Medal of Honor or whatever?
There's plenty of examples of deviations that stray far from the series' roots, some good, some bad. Was Modern Warfare a bad decision for Call of Duty, considering it changed the setting, atmosphere, characters and time?
I'm honestly not defending Max Payne 3 itself because I know nothing about it. There's nothing to defend or get furious about beyond a handful of screenshots. Whoop de doo. Maybe they tell a really good story in Brazil, maybe it sucks. There's not really any way to tell until we have an actual game.

overall i dont doubt that max payne 3 wont be a good game im just abit dissapointed at the very large appearance change in him but i guess you cant dodge bullets all the time without having a few changes. The description that they gave out to what the game is aiming for sounds promising XD

Whoever came up with this story should be fired and then shot. Not necessarily in that order.

I'm reserving judgement until screenshots of Baseballbatboy, Lords & Ladies, and Dick Justice are brought forth. I'm comfortable with the visual / artistic styles changing; however, I'm still hoping for great Noir writing, serious and gritty action, and extremely funny, sarcastic writing (a la Vinnie-"What? I'm a fuckin' collecta!"-Gognitti).
The Max Payne games, especially 2, are among my favorites of all time.
