DLC for the Win! Gamasutra is reporting (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=24162) that the PSOne version of Final Fantasy VII has seen over 100,000 downloads on the Playstation Network.
Sony says that classic RPG Final Fantasy VII has been downloaded over 100,000 times on PlayStation Network in North America since its launch during E3 in the first week of June.
Square Enix's seminal RPG -- now over a decade old -- has become something of a cultural icon to gamers, and it's generally associated with the era of more mainstream interest in Japanese RPGs in the U.S., as well as the rise of the PlayStation platform.
Sony says FFVII, which is playable both on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable via the emulated download, is one of "dozens" of classic PSone games it plans to release over the PlayStation Network between now and the year's end.

So let me get this straight: it took the US branch TWO YEARS to figure out that old games sell on console download services, after Microsoft and Nintendo have been doing it and beating their chests about their millions of sales?

I downloaded it but my card wasn't big enough to hold it so I am waiting for a 4 GB card :(

Nice to see some Marquee titles like FFVII and MGS make their way to PSN. A lot of the PS1 games they've offered have been pretty uninteresting.

No, they've had old games to download for a long time. It just took them two years to release FFVII. Still, they don't release enough of them, and the service still doesn't have simple things like screenshots.
Wii isn't much better. While they have screenshots of the games, they're tiny and few, and they have no demos available.

They knew this game would sell well I'm sure. They must have waited 2 years for a large enough install base.

So there's at least a hundred thousand poor schmucks out there experiencing an ancient (albiet classic) JRPG with sagging graphics on their super-powered game machines.

Finally good rpgs on the PSN! I downloaded this and have been enjoying it immensely. I tried Wild Arms and it was just a bit too old skool for me...
Now, if they just would release Vagrant Story and Chrono Cross, I'll be in heaven!

i could only handle the pixelated trailer for a few seconds before i screamed like a little girl. my fond memories of that game have been forever scarred beyond repair.
i never touch old games, whether on wii, xbox,ps, or pc.

Agreed. This is one title they could easily justify upgrading as they've done with the first few titles of FF on the DS.
Also, with the relatively small screen of the PSP, Cloud is so damn small it's hard to move him abouts on some screens.

so true. i tend to not play old games for the same reason: playing them now tarnishes the fond memories i had playing them a decade ago or more.

Depends on the title if its worth a play through. most titles that are from a previous gen look terrible on an HDTV. This is just a fact. Especially when you compare them to what has become the norm.
FF7 luckily can be enjoyed on a PSP. In that environment, it still shines.

I think the PSP and DS are great for things like this. Playing Tie Fighter on a 30-inch monitor, on the other hand, just makes the baby Jesus cry.:(
To be entirely honest, if i had a PS3, i probably would have bought this version.

I realize they had them at launch, but in the US store you'd be lucky to get ONE low-profile game like Jumping Flash every three months - while Japan had Resident Evil and other big hitters for months now.
Maybe soon they will figure out it might be a good idea to restore PS2 compatibility and *GASP* sell PS2 games!!!

maybe now people will finally realize that it hasn't aged all that well. I'm not saying it wasn't a very good RPG and a landmark title at the time. It's just that the industry has moved on, there are better RPGs out there, and people should stop treating this game like it cures cancer in baby kittens.

$10.00 is cheaper than the $70 it is at Game Swap or Ebay!

Wow people would actually pay 70$ for a copy of FF7 right now? People are stupider than I thought!
Now, let's be honest here. The sprite iterations of the FF series have aged far better than the 3d counter-parts. Yes the audio is amazing but you can't exactly compare the 3d to the sprite either considering the sprites are virtually ageless.

Ya know, once the research is complete, and it is found that yes, it does cure cancer in baby kittens.... well... You're going to look pretty dumb that day. Yes sir.....

I refused to pay $50+ for this game again, so the re-release is most welcome. I've been enjoying the game on the go on PSP. Though there have been some glitches going on with the graphics getting all fucked up on me. As crappy as FF7 looks compared to todays shit, fuck it. I think the Materia system is tits.
