David Jones, CEO of Realtime Worlds (who developed Crackdown) isn't too pleased with Microsoft's decision to hand over Crackdown 2 development to newly created Ruffian Studios. GI.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/david-jones-miffed-at-microsofts-ruffian-decision):
"The bottom line is that what we thought would happen is that a sequel would be done by a studio somewhere... maybe one of the internal studios, or others that they've worked with, and that would be the way it went forward," he explained.
"I think it was unfortunate that it had to be with a start-up in Dundee... it is challenging to get enough developers in one region as it is, so that was the only little big of negativity to the story.
"It's just one of those awkward moments. In terms of the franchise, as always - as with anything we've created - we're always keen to see it do great things. This is like a bump in the road... was there really no way it could have been done by one of the studios Microsoft shut down...?
"I was a bit miffed at Microsoft that it happened that way, but you live and learn," he added.
Honestly, I don't think he's got a reason to complain. Ruffian has a bunch of former Realtime Worlds folks at it...

Reminder that Crackdown was RTWs first game.

He's pissed because Ruffian is mostly former RTW folks. It's kind of silly for him to think that MS would hand the game to someone else when Ruffian already knows the game due to having built the first one.

Why is this getting press?
They don't own the IP, end of story.

I was born in Dundee and couldn`t be prouder of the gaming software heritage that the city can claim. David Jones should be proud that the industry he effectively started in the area is growing, instead of being pissed that he's not the only show in town anymore. :)

Shut up Realtime Words, you had your chance!
I kind of see where he is coming from in regards to staff.
Dundee has been heavily hit by the recession. There isn't a whole lot to attract the sort of staff needed to the city. RTW struggle as it is, Ruffian is more competition for the few talented people willing to move to that particular shit-hole.
They'd have far better luck in Glasgow. Less support for local authorities though.

So the answer to an area hit by he economic recession is to deny decent paying jobs in that area?
Personally I could care less about APB, but Crackdown 2 has me very excited.
They wanted MS to green light the sequel before the 1st one was released. No company will do that. And when MS decided they wanted a sequel Realtime was busy with APB so MS decided to hand it to people who were part of the original development team instead of some nobody that knew jack shit about the game. They should be happy that MS cared enough to do that. But no, they get pissy and huffy about a substandard praisal. Yes they didn't get you to do it, Realtime, but they went with the people who came from your company to keep it clean and untainted.

and that's the final word.
Well your wrong the fox channel will but other than them eah not many people will greenlight something ahead of the first one. Im talking about fox green lighting the second season of the cleveland show without showing the first....
Chances are this guy is seeing the writeing on the wall and that Apb wont be able to support itself ...

Under-18 single-mothers don`t even know what the recession is - and they make up 96% of Dundee's population, or so it would appear every time I visit the place. ;)
In any case, Scotland is so small anyway that a house in Glasgow is going to be "competition" just as much as the one in the next street. (Competition in the sense of employee drift, rather than at the company level anyway)

There's nobody to give the jobs to.

Hah, that's about right.
I think Glasgow has more to attract your average game developer type. Dundee is cut-off, Central Scotland would be a great place for more houses. It's the same reason they struggle to get companies to move up there - it's too far out of the way.
