This is most likely a result of DS shortages, but the week of Jan 2nd-Jan 8th the Sony PSP outsold (http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=5972) the Nintendo DS by some 40,000 units.
PSP - 132,757
NDS - 91,379
PS2 - 80,886
GBASP - 17,443
NGC - 13,423
GBM - 11,818
XBX360 - 7,477
GBA - 564
XBX - 156
Ouch to Microsoft. Congrats to Sony.

If they really are redesigning the DS, I'd be tempted to buy the DS again. After giving mine to my younger brother I found myself wanting to play it more than my PSP.

The software sales are pretty interesting for the week. 8 of the top 10 are DS games, and are approaching 1 million. The other 2 are Kingdom Hearts 2 and a GBA game. What's the best source for seeing sales like this in the U.S.? I know there was an issue with Walmart sales not reported or something, but it would be interesting to watch these numbers.

Haha. When did he say that? Of course...I guess when you compare it to XBox 1 sales...anything is better.

Note that he said that about the JPN (weak) launch about a week ago (IIRC on 1UP).

There some serious double/triple dipping going on here. How is "Brain Training" in the top 10 three times? It's almost peverse how Nintendo is able to do that.

Uh huh... PSP makes the news when it outsell the DS because of a literal sell out. But when the DS sells 600k units in *one* week, christmas week, Nothing.
Comon bap... where's the journalistic integrity :p
edit: Heh.. I wouldn't mind it either if Evil let me know if he's abandoned (or not) his early comment that about the DS offering nothing, at all, anyone would ever want... I guess its rhetorical at this point, but he was so vehement back then about how much the PSP was gonna own the DS that I rather don't want to drop the issue... :p

The PSP may have out sold the DS, but when you consider that the DS has been outselling the PSP for 8 months now... it puts it in a bit of perspective.

This is the first time the PSP outsold the DS, no matter what the prevailing circumstances might have been. So for sony it IS a big deal. Nintendo's track record for the DS gives you the over-all picture. This may just spur, (or it may have already begun to spur the rumored DS re-design) more innovation on Nintendo's part. Nintendo never says die, although I wonder if they've revised their stance on "not competing with the PSP?"

It's interesting what those software sales seem to reveal. I would assume the Brain Training game are not being sold primarily to kids. It seems Nintendo has broken into the adult mainstream market in Japan with the DS all because of this application. Are their any plans to release it here? I know it wouldn't do nearly as well, but I am personally intersted in playing around with it.

This is the first time the PSP outsold the DS, no matter what the prevailing circumstances might have been.Nah... there was a brief 10 week segment or so were the PSP was out selling the DS anywhere between 50-10,000 units week over week. This was I dunno maybe 4 months or so after PSP launch.
although I wonder if they've revised their stance on "not competing with the PSP?"Well, there _is_ no competiton, i'd reckon. Over December in Japan (Nov 28 to Jan 01) the DS sold ~1.8 million units (almost 2M) vs the PSP which just ever so barely cracked 500,000.

Well I know these figures are for Japan, but if the situation is anything like it is over here, the reason for why the DS is selling more software is simple...
THERE ARE NO FUCKING GOOD GAMES FOR THE PSP!!!
There's 500 UMD movies... and what... 25 - 30 games at most? 5 of which are worth playing and half of those came out on launch.
Good lord I hate my PSP. If I could get back what I put into it I would sell it in an instant, but I paid too much for it.
The launch line-up was great... there's just been NOTHING since then.
Yes, I know I go on this rant every time the PSP is mention. Oh well.

You don't say..... ;)
Sony has made it very apparent that the PSP is a multimedia device, and have not dedicated all their efforts on the gaming side of the device. On the PS2 and PSX, it seems playing CDs and movies were almost added as an afterthought, since they were already using the optical drives. It's more than apparent this time around thought that they want the device to be accepted as a portable media hub, and not just a "GameStation" portable.

I'll stick with listening to Tool.

Maybe we should stop comparing a handheld movie player to a gaming system then?

Music to my ears (eyes actually). Seems that Sony won't be making up those hardware losses on PSP software anytime soon. :cool:200,000 PSP units will be shipped on launch day in Japan, with an additional 300,000 units promised before the end of the year. As Sony's annual manufacturing rate is about 3 million PSP units, the company, for the next fiscal year, will ship 1 million units each to North America, Europe, and Japan. That, says Kutaragi, will be the break-even point for Sony's PSP to start making a profit. (http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-11721-944-1-1-x)PSP to ship 20 million units in 2006, says Samsung exec (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/news.php?aid=14009)
They've long sinced passed the break even point. And the larger volume on components this year mean lower costs for them and even greater profits.
Try again, fanboy.

Think pokemon, blue/red/yellow/.
The PSP is still a major threat though, This thing does do alot and kills the DS in the screen department. When they are 150$ is when nintendo better have the GBA2 on the way. But till then DS is owning in games, i swear its the best system out right now, home consoles included.
End of the day, the DS ends up being the more memrobile system, i can only warm up so much to a system that isnt true to itself, it does to much.

I can't wait for Tool's next album. Wish they wouldn't take so damn long to create, though. Also, they need to release a real live album. Maynard's voice is phenominal out of the studio.

I hope both portables do well, I have no ill will against either. Actually, I'm pretty loving of all systems right now, and will love the 360 when the library is worth purchasing one for in maybe a year. I'm one of the few that likes the design...and I lurve the controller. But alas, if last gen was any indication, the 360 genres and games wont appeal to me as much as the PS3 and Rev. Hopefully this console changes that, but 3-5 RPGs or Japanese games wont appease me. I currently have no high hopes for Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey, but here's hoping that I'm happily surprised!

If our reaction to this game is any indication (I am assuming you grew up playing and loving RPGs the way I did), I suspect Sakaguchi will not be nearly enough to convince Japanese gamers.
