Activision sends along word that the second Call of Duty: World at War map pack is now available, featuring four new maps - including a new Zombie map.
Call of Duty: World at War continues to unleash the fury, as Activision Publishing, Inc. and Treyarch announced today that Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 is now available for download on Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system. The new map pack delivers four new maps – including a brand new Zombie map – for the blockbuster title that has now surpassed 11 million units sold across all platforms, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and Gfk.
“We are thrilled with the ongoing support from Call of Duty: World at War’s online community,” said Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch. “To the millions of fans enlisted for battle, we can’t wait for you to play what we have been working on with our new competitive multiplayer maps, and our latest co-op Zombie map, that reveals some exciting surprises!”

Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 will include:
Banzai
Deep in the jungles of Japanese controlled territory, players will battle to control the tall river bridge in “Banzai,” a bright, medium-sized jungle map featuring a stunning waterfall, villages and hidden caves well suited for deadly snipers, surprise attacks and all out gun battles.
Corrosion
In “Corrosion,” players will face down the enemy in a deteriorated Russian train yard. Shattered pipelines and war torn train cars decorate this mid-sized map and are great for full-out team combat. Beware, because the enemy could be anywhere!
Sub Pens
“Sub Pens” drops players into a close-quarter abandoned Japanese submarine base that’s littered with live ammunition, breached subs and idle fighter planes. Monsoon rains will be a factor as teams struggle to control key choke points in this tight map designed for exciting and deadly battles.
Shi No Numa (Zombie Swamp)
In this addition to the four-player co-op favorite, the un-ending Zombie horde requires players to keep moving, moving, moving! Imperial Zombies rise from the misty swamps and flaming Hell Hounds blaze through the jungle as players struggle to stick together. The situation is bleak, but there is help on the way: new traps to keep the undead out (the deadly Flogger), a zip line for quick escapes, and best of all, a new weapon: The Wunderwaffe DG-2. The DG-2, aka "The Lightning Gun" is the pinnacle of secret Nazi technology. Packed with 200,000 amperes of devastating chained electrical current, The Wunderwaffe DG-2 should help even the score and enable players to capture the 10 new Xbox 360 Achievements/PS3 Trophies waiting for them inside the deadly swamp.
Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 is currently available on Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft for 800 Microsoft Points and on the PlayStation Store for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system for $9.99.
Call of Duty: World at War is rated “M” (Mature) by the ESRB for Intense Violence, Strong Language, Blood and Gore. For more information and exclusive updates about Call of Duty: World at War, visit www.callofduty.com.

This makes no sense, they should just release this in about four months as CALL OF DUTY WORLD AT WAR 2.
I mean, why would a company release new maps and continued support for free?
Right, Valve?

Or even better, how about they make new maps, new characters, new weapons, and overhaul the entire game for free? I feel like I'm entitled to it since I bought the first game.

Since my work computer sucks something awful, embedded youtube videos tend to stutter and freeze a bit. However it stopped at 22 seconds and it looks like a zombie is karate chopping a russian soldier.
It made me giggle

This map pack isn't free. Hopefully they'll get Intel (or someone else) to sponsor it again this time around for PC users. $10 for three multiplayer maps and something I might play once is a little steep. I figure that they prolly figure most of the PC community agrees, so like so much other DLC from the big console developers we won't see it at all unless they manage to get it sponsored.
Just a note, the difference between an MP map and a singleplayer/co-op campaign is huge. If the price here was comparable, 5 new campaigns would have 5 maps each (prolly more considering a normal MP map size, but just going by how Valve splits them up). That'd be 25 maps at the Activision price of $2.50 a map... we'd be paying $62.50 (more than L4D cost). That's just looking at maps alone, not the slew of added gameplay features. No added gameplay features with this map pack.
Not justifying one method either way. Just saying if you were going to draw a line, I wouldn't suggest using this as an example.

Thanks, but I knew that. I was trying to make a point.

No, No, NO! You've got it all wrong, man!
Don't you see, gaming isn't a product anymore, it's a service. Once you buy into a company, they're obligated to support you forever.
*Hey, I just thought of a new business model. Pay me as a pub monthly service fees and I'll let you play any game we publish. Sounds like a win!
oh wait....

Hey sorry, the way it was written looked like it was implying that by not turning an expansion into a sequel, that they weren't charging extra money and releasing a free map pack. The 'why would a company release new maps and continued support for free?' in sarcastic text would seem to imply the opposite to be true, and putting it inside the jab at Valve would imply that what they are doing is opposite what Valve is doing with L4D2. That was my bad, I only caught on to half the irony.
My point about Valve's releasing a full game-even if it is just an 'expansion' that happens to have more content than the original-being cheaper for the consumer than the overpriced piecemeal stuff still stands though.

Is that part sarcastic too? I get the irony in the last part, and that kind of implies the first part to be sarcastic... but that would counter the original point. I'm honestly not trying to sound nitpicky, it's just kind of hard to pick up on sarcasm on the internet. I think I'm missing the point again.

I fully understand your argument. Sometimes I talk out of my ass, but with this, I was actually making a point. [2 of them!]
See, my first post (contrary to the belief I hold that Valve should've supported L4D better) was only to point out a view that others have and make fun of it, despite the fact I believe in it. I suppose it's double-irony, if that exists. (I'm not above poking fun at myself)
My second post was to issue in an idea of gaming as a service, whereas you pay a publisher a certain amount of money (like Microsoft's Software Assurance program) and are entitled to all the updates, patches and releases as long as you are a member, but I wanted to make a joke out of it as something like that is far down the road, if ever possible.
Now that I've explained it, those ideas sound even worse, thanks a lot:)

For the amount of time and enjoyment I've gotten out of all my COD map packs, I never hesitate to drop the coin. I don't quite understand why some people have such an issue with the price of these expansions. Were you happy with the core game paying $50 to $60 prior to the release of the expansions? Most likely. Why is it such a stretch for MS to ask $10 for additional content? Skip a couple of McDonalds value meals and suck it up. $10 isn't a lot of money. Or just don't buy it.

I 100% agree. The only people who are going to buy this are the ones who only play COD multiplayer week in and week out. I use to fall under that umbrella, but I've since started playing different games while I hold out for Modern Warfare 2. But I will say, that back when I was playing COD every night, $10 is dirt cheap for 3 new MP maps.
