Gears of War blends the best of tactical action games with the best of survival horror titles, thrusting gamers into the harrowing story of humankind's battle for survival against the Locust Horde, creating cinematic, high-definition visuals so intense and powerful, it feels like the gamers are controlling a blockbuster action movie.
In this third-person tactical shooter, gamers live and breathe the role of Marcus Fenix. A disgraced former war hero, Marcus seeks personal redemption as he leads his fire team against an onslaught of merciless warrior fiends. Gamers immerse themselves in an experience so intensely emotional and gut-wrenching that playing will be like controlling a blockbuster action movie.
Check out 7 New Gears of War screens (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=31068) over at WorthPlaying
Editor's Note: I just found out these are old screen shots from 2004.

They're kidding right? I mean it looks nice and all, but cardboard cutout cigar chompin' marines and anonymous "grrrr" lizardmen are not going make me emote. This game looks pure cheeseburger.

The screens look good but I have to admit they aren't looking as nice as they used to. Could it be because graphics are catching up to the Unreal 3 engine?
To me they look a bit washed out and jaggy.

I agree... these screenshots aren't really up to par to the things that were previously shown....
Considering all the criticism I read about this latest batch of screenshots I was expecting to see something worse.
Maybe GW is not as impressive as it use to look back 6 months ago, still the game retains a certain atmosphere I quite feel interested in...

I suppose these are realtime and those old weren't.
Of course I could be wrong.

I'm wondering if different screenshots got posted since everyone else looked at them. Because the ones I'm seeing are fucking nuts. Jaggies? Are you kidding?

I guess to each his own but I didn't think they looked bad. I know some of the previous shots included real footage but also artwork. Are people comparing these new shots to the artwork?

Well, it looks like exactly the same game and engine, but just shots of crappy areas. The game is mainly based in a ruined city from what we've seen and been told by Cliffy at his 1up thing, and theres a picture of some grass and a hill. Hmm. Then some concept art and a random little shack. Hmm. Apart from that it looks the same. There are a few jagged bits but that seems more low picture quality rather than the shot, I remember stuff like this with WP before, where they have a really small thumbnail and then blow up the actual picture quite a bit. Also I don't like it that you have to look at a picture in the same window one at a time without any picture browsing buttons.
So when is the 360 going to be graphically impressive?

I would like you to name one game you have played that looks better?
You guys are like a bunch of menaposile (spelling?) bi polar old women, bitching about almost everything posted. One seconed it's the graphics the next (if the graphics are good) it's assumptions on the gameply. At least your not fanboys and hate everything equaly for the most part. I still cant seem to figure out why most of you come to this site, it's obvious you don't like 99% of the games made in the last 10-15 years. Why dont you all dust off your snes, genesis and or turbo grafx and stop the bitching or enjoy these games for what they are and stop expecting the seconed coming.

Guys, he's rigth, I mean all of our opinions are WRONG! let us all be "menaposile" and stop expecting the "seconed" coming of video games, while stoping all form of criticism towards video games at this video game site, and perhaps maybe one day, we'll find "ine" game that will make our "turbo graFX" bow down in shame! I was more interested in finding a game a PC wouldn't be able to run. Every new generation it becomes more and more rare. I figured it would be the other way around.
Next gen consoles are second gen gaming systems.

It's not innovation unless it involves another texture pass. - tycho
I'm kind of assuming you can't innovate anything but graphics on a non-pc platform. Either that or the last decade has been an anomaly.

At one time, many moons ago, I remember it being mentioned that the Gears of War developers were putting in a unique gameplay moment in every level. This was in a preview conducted by EGM. Supposedly the level layout maps had a gold star in each level were a break away from gameplay (ala taking control of the mech in Chronicles of Riddick) occurred. Is that still planned?

I think that unless you come up with a new way to interface with the games, yes, all you can do is add another texture pass, however, I think Microsoft found a way with their Xbox Live! systemto breathe fresh air into consoles, while Live! is not exactly innovative, it's pretty close, and I mean, there is NOTHING wrong with more graphical detail (Atmosphere, Inmersion) but that can only do so much to make it fun.

Wow! looks like somebodys a bit sensative. Maybe you should take your mydol and come back when your feeling less emotional.
It's not a matter of being "rigth" or wrong, I agree everyone is intitled to there opinions but there is a difference between criticism and bitching. Go back and read some older forums, everything is this looks shitty, that looks shitty. It just seems to be a rare thing to read anything positive about a game on this site before it's been released. Therefore alot of the people come off like they don't really enjoy these new games (hence the older conole reference) which is fine I just don't understand why they spend so much time in these particular topics.

I think you know, but just to clarify Tycho was saying thats whats perceived as innovation by lots of people now, graphical advances. (It came off a little bit that he meant what he said).
Well I don't know about most people, but I know that if the higher end King Kong won't run on the majority of systems, GoW probably won't run to the majority without some sort of PC upgrade. It may well run on a lot, but wouldn't probably look as good as the developers intended.
Don't know what the hell you are talking about, every mention of GOW has led to an orgy of praise up until this thread.

Personaly while I think inovation may be great all's I really want is to have a few hours of fun, anything above and beyned that is just a nice bonus. If I start expecting every game to go above and beyoned then I wont be able to enjoy the games for what they are. The average becomes bad and the great becomes average then there are no more truly worthy games and I turn into my father and walk away to drink my fiber and bitch about the neighbors.
I really didn't expect people to take this quite so personally,so I am sorry if I offended anyone but it's not just about GoW but a majority of the game spacific threads on this site. I realize we all have expectations I just think they may be to high for our own good. The sooner we realize we will never have that amazing gaming expierience we had when we were kids(the tragadie of growing up) the easier it will be to enjoy what we have left.

It's hard to highlight a graphics engine that does real-time shadows in still shots.

Grifter_66 and others just relax and chill out.My earlier post regarding the graphics said that the game looks good. It's just that these screens don't seem to look as good as the previous footage which has been released.
It might be that the developer has to cut back on certain non essential effects/graphics because now they are building a game and not a demo for their engine. Or it could be that these new shots are just crap examples. Only time will tell.
It still looks great and I can't wait to get my hands on it :)

Um....what?
And I stand by what I said before...these shots look like crap. They look like someone took them from a digital camera taking a picture off a PC monitor or something. The contrast is atrocious and there's a general lack of detail.

But I forgot. Unreal Engine 3 is outdate, because we've all been playing games on a more advanced engine for months now. Oh wait. No we haven't...
Seriously... These shots look bad? What does it take to impress some of you?

No, you are insane... that game looks like nuts.
I don't think those screen shots are doing the game justice after the preview trailer that was shown at E3. Doesn't mean it will be a bad game by any stretch of the imagination.

No, no, no. You've got it all wrong bud. There was never any "artwork" released - those were "real" in-game shots. We already had this discussion. ;)

If you want innovative gameplay, I'm hoping ALAN WAKE fits the bill.
And what about INDIGIO PROPHECY? That mixed things up nicely.
Because seriously, so long as games involve 95% shooting things, then nothing will ever change or get better. Combat can only be so interesting before it becomes routine. Developers need to look around the real world and start realizing there are all kinds of interesting situations they could model that don't necessarily involve shooting hordes of enemies over and over again.
Yes, this would be trickier and require more imagination, and that's probably why it hasn't been done very often.
I actually bought Indigo Prophecy the day before my computer shit the bed, so I haven't had a chance to play.
2 weeks now and still waiting for my replacement motherboard. You suck Gigabyte.

These are very old images, mostly from our internal PR Kick-off meeting with Microsoft back in December 2004. They were never intended for release and they don't come anywhere close to representing what the game looks like today. In fact some of those images don't represent the game AT ALL! The grassy field images are from our GDC 2004 Unreal Engine 3 demo and NOT from Gears! That is TWO YEAR OLD engine demo content we showed to Microsoft PR people to give them an early flavor of what the tech could do. As you can probably guess we're pretty unhappy that these crappy images have surfaced. Unfortunately this isn't the first time our publisher has released content not intended for release and it feels like a punch in the gut every time it happens.
