The good people over at 2K Games (http://www.2kgames.com) were kind enough to let me know that the website for Prey has now gone live (http://www.prey.com/flash.html).
Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. Abducted along with his people to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, he sets out to save himself and his girlfriend and eventually his planet.
* Built on an enhanced Doom 3 engine, the most impressive 3D engine used in a released game.
* Portal technology adds a new dimension to gameplay, allowing enemies to appear out of thin air and create new and completely original puzzles and gameplay styles.
* Several never-before-seen gameplay elements such as Spirit Walking, Wall Walking, and Deathwalk.
* Highly organic, living environment that itself can attack Tommy.
* A deep, emotional story of love and sacrifice.
* Tommy has a sidekick, a spiritual hawk that can help him fight enemies and decipher the alien language of the living ship.
* Multiplayer game support that takes advantage of the unique gameplay styles in Prey.
Damn, that's a purdy website and a purdy looking game. I like the whole warp gate thing.

Did anyone else play the Seriously Warped mod for the first Serious Sam? That was one of the first games I know of to feature the variable gravity that let you walk up walls. The maps for that mod looked like escher paintings. It was great. I wonder if anyone still plays it. Hopefully Prey will be just as inventive with the system. Falling through a system of catwalks going in every direction each with their own relative gravity orientation was very very disorienting.

This game really looks awesome. I've been excited for it for a long while now. I watched like a 20 minute long gameplay video of it a while back and it REALLY made me want the game. I still do.
It looks to be putting the D3 engine to good use too. No pitch black coridors! Yay!
It really reminds me of Duke Nukem for some reason... only with indians... I guess it could be a cross between Duke and Turok. Both of which are awesome games!

This still looks great. Warp gates may be a gimmick, but this implementation looks pretty mind-twisting especially in conjunction with altered gravity.

I had forgotten about Prey (again), now I'm excited again.

We definitely need another mmofps. I'm hoping this is good.

I think you may have this thread confused with the one for Huxley.
This looks really good to me. The level design looks great and the warp gates and gravity tricks sound like more than a gimmick to me. Plus, the spirit world thing almost makes this two games (sort of...ok, maybe 1 3/4 of a game).

Not that I'm trying to add fuel to a non-existent fire, but isn't Prey one of those games that has been floating around in development land for almost as long as DNF?
I recall reading previews for this game quite some time ago. I want to say '98 or '99, but I'm just hoping that I'm mistaken and that it hasn't been that long.
That said, if they actually get the game out the door and it's decent, I'll be happy. Aside from the fact that it will be another game, like FEAR, that I will have to wait until after my next upgrade to play, that is...

Is this also the game where it is impossible to die? Or something to that effect...I read something about that once...Or maybe I just made it up. But I could swear I read it.

You're thinking of the right game, it has been in development for 7 years. However, it really looks like it is coming out, finally. The game looks to be cool, so here is to hoping.

Can we all agree that "Earths savior doesn't want the job(tm)" is the worst game-related tag line since "John Romero is going to make you his bitch."

Technically, yes its impossible to die.
Actually, it is possible to die. When the life bar is depleted, the player is transported into the spirit world where they must use a bow and arrow to shoot as many spirits as possible within a limited amount of time. The more spirits that are defeated, the more life the player will have when they are returned to the material world. However, if the player fails to defeat any spirits they will in fact die.
On paper this sounds like it could present some major problems such as making the game too easy. However, the last E3 demo video showed the transition to and from the spirit world multiple times and it came off as being a great way to keep the game moving while not making it too easy. I have read around the internets that various factors such as how severely the final damage to the player was will affect how much time they are allowed in the spirit world and therefore how much time they have to defeat more spirits.
It really seems as though 3D Realms is going to a lot of work to make sure this system does not negatively affect the game and that it does not end up as nothing more than a novel feature. Considering how good Prey is looking, I have almost regained a sliver of hope for DNF.
Game looks boring as hell

Yes and no....it was supposed to be developed back in 97/98 but the technology back then didnt support the features this game was supposed to have (gravity control, warp gates etc.) so now that the doom 3 engine has been somewhat time tested (3 games out....good enough for me) they started work on it again, check the official 3drealms forums for stuff ive probably missed out on.
Is it just me or is the whole dead - resurrect thing reminiscent of soul reaver?

Personally, im a bit tired of the Doom engine. Cant they at least change the enviroment a bit? Also, whats up with the enemies that have the misile-launchers-for-hands, just like in doom?

I hope I dont come across as needlessy jaded just for the sake of being blase', but those screens don't really do much for me. Looks entirely too much like Doom 3 and Quake 4. Proof will be in gameplay I suppose, but for my money I'm still more jazzed about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. or Oblivion.

Wow, so now they're trying to create a name for "monsters appear, and kick your ass before you know what's going on."

Well the whole portal idea has been part of the game design since it's inception back in 98/99.
So while it may be a new twist on monster closets, you can't call them derivative.
