You know the cool folks you rolled with (and potentially pissed off or worse) in Mass Effect? C'mon you know who I'm talkin' about... People like Garrus, Wrex, and Liara! Apparently, Casey Hudson, Bioware Project Director, says that you won't be rolling with them in the sequel... instead, it's an all new cast of characters in your squad. NowGamer (http://xbox-360.nowgamer.com/news/674/mass-effect-2-has-bloodbath-ending):

Hudson also said that while previous squad members from Mass Effect will return, none of them will be recruitable.

"All the squad members that you pick up are completely new characters," he said. "Some of them from races that have never been in your squad before."

"It’s going to be larger squad, a lot more varied and very, very different kinds of characters. "Everyone that you can take with you is a different character from before."

I wouldn't mind taking some of the old crew along for a new ride. Oh well, this'll still rock my socks.

Here's hoping we get a Hanar or a Volus.

(*Quiet Enthusiasm*) Or maybe an Elcor. Elcor warriors don't carry small arms; their broad shoulders serve as a stable platform for the same size of weapons typically mounted on Alliance fighting vehicles.

Aww, I liked having Wrex and Garrus around.

I guess that's one way to get around the production costs of having to support every possible story permutation.

If this is the trade-off we need to have interesting and meaningful interactions with our squad-mates, count me in.

I'm gonna miss Wrex! He was too awesome.

Wrex: Do your people ever talk about how you unleashed the geth on the universe and then got banished from your own world by them?

Tali: Do your people ever talk about how you tried to take over the universe, but were struck with a virus to make you all sterile?

Wrex: All the time.

Agreed. But I do like the fact we will be able to interact with them at least. I think they mentioned Liara was the one ferrying you to the building where the assassin was.

I'm a little disappointed in this, as I think the "bond" with the previous characters would only serve to assist the story. I mean, I would instantly give a shit about the new story if the old characters were involved.

It's not a deal-breaker for me, not even close. But still, I'm disappointed.

great, different alien chicks to seduce, that blue one was getting a bit too "put a ring on it" for my tastes.

I can't wait for this release. In fact it may be time to blow the dust off of Mass Effect and give it another go.

This is disappointing. Seems kind of counter-productive to remove one of the bigger driving forces in the story and put in a new one.

You let Kaidan give his life so you could keep Ashley? Sad. Oh well, now you don't even have Ashley.

Sadness.

Maybe the main character will decide he has done enough, and must travel beyond the rim of the Stars...

That's really lame. I was hoping we'd have the kind of relationship with a core group the way I did with several of the Baldur's Gate characters. Like Minsc, Jaheira and Imoen were all in my party for the better part of three games and I think they were better for it.

Those were much better characters than what you got in ME, imo. Minsc is probably the most loved character in gaming (for people that know him).

A lot of the love for the retained characters was created in the two sequels. Jaheria, Viconia and Imoen were all developed out pretty radically.

Miniature Space Hamster Boo agrees with this statement.

I nominate HK-47 for "the most loved character in gaming".

Apparently there's been a clarification of this from Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5287495/no-more-bossing-ashley-or-wrex-around-in-mass-effect-2-%5Bupdate%5D

Haha, that's great. There's pretty much ZERO vagueness in his original quote (repeated below)... yet now they're saying "oh, well... we meant to say you can have some of them in your squad."

"All the squad members that you pick up are completely new characters,"
