View Full Version : Prototype Initial Impressions

I'll preface this with the statement - this is my impressions, plain and simple, off of the first hour or so of gameplay. Take of it what you will, but let's not turn this into a flaming war, mkay? Only other word of warning - I'm going to try to keep this spoiler free, but won't guarentee it. If in doubt, stop reading.

I picked up Prototype for my eldest son as one of his 14th birthday gifts. He was drawn to it by some of the trailers and early footage, and has enjoyed the sandbox games he's played in the past. I was hesitant at first, for several reasons. First, I picked up inFAMOUS at launch, and have been enjoying that title to a large degree, as has my son. Where Prototype shares the same sandbox design, I was worried that it would be too akin and we would likely bore from it quickly. And secondly, quite frankly, the gameplay footage I had seen seemed a bit rough, both in animation and movement as well as in general graphics and textures. But, I've always taught my son to be an educated consumer, and reviews started flowing in yesterday quite positively at metacritic.com and gamerankings.com, so I let him go through with the purchase.

After he had his quick fill of the game and headed off to bed, I threw the disc into the 360 for about an hour worth of gaming time. So that's first point - this is a very limited sampling of what the game has to offer. I'll concede that. The intro to the game was very well done. Both my wife and I thought we were watching a movie. One thing that struck out immediately was the language. A bit of a turn off to be honest - I don't need f-bombs every other minute to get the point that it's a dirty, viscereal environment that is being painted. But the CGI was well done, and the story seemed authentic.

I enjoyed the manner in which the game is set up as a flashback to a series of events that you need to unwind. Very 'Jason Bourne' and fits well. The whole 'web of intrigue' is very well done. I can see that it will be a large draw to me personally to hunt down the people and fill out the story, and will keep me moving forward in the game. The same quality of CGI is there, and that's a good thing.

The overall mechanics of the gameplay seem pretty standard. Attacks and jumps with the face buttons, targetting with a trigger - no real deviations from a tried input model. However, what did strike me was the overall speed. Without someone targetted, it is absurdly fast. Too fast at least at the start. It may be something I get accustomed to, but I found myself standing in place for a fraction of a second while I tried to figure out where the enemies were on the screen (since they were intermixed with a gazillion peds as well). When you do target someone, then the game slows down to almost to slow of a speed. Again, maybe I'll get used to it, or maybe it's appropriate when you get more and different powers. But for the time being, it didn't make for a terribly pleasant experience.

With that said, the whole 'absorption' idea is stellar. The first time you morph into someone and pull the wool over the enemies eyes, so to speak, was great. I can see it creating a very tactical aspect to the game, should someone like that (I personally do - I'd rather take an elegant route to a mission than barge in and just beat everyone into submission). I'm holding strong hope that it's leverged heavily throughout the entire game.

And then...yes, you've heard this before, the graphics. I know this is a sandbox game. I know there is a TON of stuff going on at once. I know gameplay > graphics, by and large. However, at some point lack of grahpics can detract from the gameplay experience because they are so attention grabbing that you can't help but pay attention to them. Case in point - the first time I'm running up a building, I caught myself thinking about the bland texture. No sheen on the windows, no terraces or anything for that matter to break up the flat northern face of the skyscraper.

Final verdict? Too early to tell. Will the powers yet-to-be unlocked help make the speed of the game feel more natural? Will the missions vary enough and, with the help of a solid story, minimize my attention from the lackluster graphics? I don't know, but at least at this point the game has sold me on finding out. That's a good first step.

The more I play this game, the more I love it. But I would agree with one reviewers take that he would turn it off at certain points if he weren't reviewing it. There are some very challenging parts, or maybe I just went around it the wrong way. The combat can be completely chaotic at times due to the camera getting turned around, and getting the hang of the targeting.

I, too, played roughly the first hour of the game last night. My initial reaction was surprise at just how similar inFamouse and Prototype are in terms of scope and overall story. I knew they were similar going into it...but the opening movie really drove it home. I'm not attempting to imply that one is a ripoff of the other; instead, I find it fascinating to see the products of two separate groups who independently developed games based off of a similar concept.

The game is fast and Alex is extremely powerful, even from the start(the real start, not the "prologue" start)...but there was one nagging thought continuously pestering me the entire time I played the game.

This isn't inFamous.

I fell in love with inFamous almost immediately. I find Cole to be a very enjoyable character. I love the powers he's supplied with as they genuinely make you feel very, very powerful. I love the comic book presentation and the fact that the phrase "super hero" is flung around. Most importantly, however, is the morality scale and the fact that it's the first game to make me want to take the good path. Playing the hero, even through all of the shitty choices you have to make, is a lot of fun this time around.

Ultimately, this is one of Prototype's weaker points.

Alex is a viscious badass, through and through. You're encouraged to kill anything and everything in your path as messily and brutally as possible. You're no hero...you're just an amnesiatic biological weapon on the warpath. While this can be fun, it's not quite as fulfulling of an experience.

It's definitely far too early to say which is superior or anything like that, but I did find myself almost missing inFamous for that first hour.

I felt the same way through about the first 6 hours of prototype. But as you play on and acquire new powers and upgrades, you realize that this game plays far differently from inFamous - almost to the point where they can stop being compared. The pace is about 10x faster, and all of the powers are more melee oriented.

I'm at a point now where I think this game is as good as inFamous. I read in a review that the missions were boring and repetitive? This certainly isn't what I've experienced. The missions pretty unique and match up with the storyline very well, so you actually feel like you're playing out the story, rather than trying to complete a mission in order to beat the game.

possible spoiler: The armor and blade powers totally redefined combat for me, I find myself going to this combo more than any other.

Just got armor and blade last night. Flying a helicopter feels good with the PS3 controller.

This was about the point where I really started enjoying the game :)

It is pretty rough around the edges and right now I feel like I've done this all before but better.

90 mins in though. It's enjoyable enough but I expected more - the disguise system is entertaining but weirdly forgiving. I can glide into an enemy base and they don't think its odd that Lt. Jim just got his wings?

I noticed almost immediately that Alex is a more melee-based character than Cole, which certainly helps differentiate the two and obviously makes for an entirely different experience.
It's almost a tad too violent, surprisingly; inFamous has a certain level of finesse and panache to it's violence. Prototype just spills gallons of blood.

I know my comments seem negative so far, but my overall impression with the game is actually rather favorable. It's fun and unique enough from inFamous that it doesn't feel like I paid for the same game twice. Like I mentioned earlier, they're two different takes on virtually the same idea.

Visually speaking, I have to agree; it's not nearly as good-looking as inFamous(to continue the comparisons...I'm sorry, I just love that game!), but the overall scope of the city does appear to be larger. They had to concede somewhere to make the city feel as expansive as it needed to...but damn, those are some ass-ugly cars.

The problem is that I've done New York several times over now. Jumping from the top of the Empire State holds no wonder anymore.

I'm impressed with the story so far though. Loads has already been packed in.

This game is tough. I've died 38 times :( (and counting)

Rented it on Saturday and played the heck out of it the past two days.

The one thing that disappoints me is how many missions and activities have required using a tank. For a character that has such unique abilities and such great power, I feel that the vehicle has been overused, especially this early on in the game.

The Targeting system actually slows the game down for maybe a second or half second right at first to help make sure you get the right target and then the game hits full speed again. the same thing happens with the power selecting as well. I just finished off the main story a few days ago and if I hadn't picked up Overlord 2 I would probably still be focused on finishing the web of intrigue. The W.O.I. has probably been my favorite part, I love it for the idea of story telling. I have compromised and even failed missons just to get some of the targets. Replaying some of the missions I think the devs actually used the targets as bait to try and throw you off and challenge you on some missions b/c I will see the same targets pop up every time during some missions.

Overall I really enjoy Prototype, the gameplay is weird at first but once you get the hang of it it feels awesome to dive into a military base, snag the key holder, go inside wipe everyone out without a scratch, go back out, blow up the base, jack one of the strike team helis, and then use it to blow up another base.
