The classic puzzler that kept gamers glued to their Game Boy is coming to the DS complete with touch screen functionality and online gaming (http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/nid/1508/2076/).

The DS version of the classic game will feature new game types that are only possible on the DS. Each of the game's six modes of play feature a theme based on a classic Nintendo game, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid.

The game will also feature multiplayer action with head-to-head play between two players, or huge ten-player wireless battles with only one game cart. Tetris DS will also support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, allowing online play for up to four players.

Let's just hope it's better than all the recent official Tetris games. Geeze, those have been horrible. It really shouldn't be that hard to mess up.

They sure have.

I'd prefer Capcom's Puzzle fighter updated with WIFI myself.

It looks like Nintendo (not a third party) is handling this, so it should be much better than Tetris Worlds or any of those other horrible renditions. Tetris is still one of the best games. I can imagine 10 play wireless tetris and online play will make the DS very very popular with gamers and non-gamers alike. I know it's already available in pretty decent form as shareware online on the PC, but that is sort of a niche market. I can easily see this becoming a big system seller for Nintendo to moms and girlfriends everywhere... seriously.

At long last, portable, wireless tetris. Finally!

I still have my original GB cart of Tetris which, to this day, remains the only version I've played for much longer than a game or two. I'll definately give this a rent, but they've got some big shoes to fill.

I know they had an online version of Tetris on the computer, but I never did get around to trying it.

Wireless Tetris? With Nintendo characters? It's like a license to print money!

I actually really liked Tetris Attack on the SNES too, I think the did a Pokemon ripoff of it too but I haven't played that.

While they are at it, they should just throw Tetris Attack and Dr. Mario on the cartridge and finish their domination of the handheld market.

Yeah, Tetris Attack is a great game. Leave it to one of Gunpei Yoki's last games to be on of the best puzzle games out there. I couldn't agree more with Nintendo including it.

This is all great news, if Nintendo markets their two March WiFi games properly, Metroid Hunters and Tetris DS will be a huge success.

OH man. I've never found any good competition for puzzle games from my friends. I'm sure online there will be plenty of people more hardcore than me waiting to kick my ass. Though like someone said, Dr. Mario online would make the deal much sweeter.

Has anyone here played The Next Tetris on PSX? My friends and I all loved that game. It played a bit different from regular Tetris, and really encouraged thinking many moves ahead for combos. Though I get the impression that the rest of the world didn't like it so much.

Any word on a 360 version w/ Arcade? It seems like a no-brainer, is the game hard to license or something?

Tetris attack is a great game. We still pop in that snes cart a few times a month around here. I think that with the stylus it could prove very interesting. Go ahead and throw your opponents screen up on the 2nd screen...yeah. Anyone at nintendo listening to this?

The best Tetris game ever is The New Tetris for N64.

Tetris Attack isn't officially a "Tetris", it was originally Panel de Pon in Japan, they attached "Tetris" to it in America to make it sell more, and then they attached Pokemon to it in America to sell more, and that's where it rests. If you want to play it on a portable, pick up Dr. Mario/Puzzle League since "Puzzle League" is what Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack is called now.

I was a Tetrinet wizard(with specials, classic was for pussies) back in the days of Kali, top ten on all the ladders. I would love this.

"The best Tetris game ever is The New Tetris for N64."

Agreed. That's one of the most played games on my modded Xbox at parties. Anyone can pick it up and play and have a good time.

I'm really hoping this incarnation is built on that foundation. Even the little things like being able to make combos by making those huge blocks or being able to swap out a piece made the game so fun. Then playing 4 player and being able to choose who you wanted to dump on.

Nintendo should also port Tetrisphere to DS.

Tetris Attack is awesome, along with Pokemon Puzzle League for N64. I am not even a fan of Pokemon, but that was one of the raddest puzzle games ever.

Oooh. The front page post should be updated with these.

It plays Mario on the top screen while you play?! Cool!

Really? I was a huge fan of Tetrisphere myself (I know it was a break from the original gameplay), it was a fun puzzler, had great animations and fantastic soundtrack.

Yay! Another fan of Tetrisphere.

It's the only game with the Tetris name on it since the original that really grabbed me and wouldn't let go. The fact that it has such an amazing soundtrack helped too. Heck, I still listen to the soundtrack (hooray for MP3's of game music!)
