Well, guys, there's no damned excuse to not be reading this now. Newsarama (http://www.newsarama.com/) has just put up the WHOLE first issue of Fell for your reading pleasure, available here. (http://www.newsarama.com/ImageComics/Fell/Fell01Issue.htm)

This is written by Warren Ellis, British writer adored by many EvAv comic readers. Furthermore, this has been hailed as one of his most brilliant books ever. The idea is to create a book that is shorter (16pp) but also cheaper ($1.99) than all the other books on the market right now, and also tells a COMPLETE story every issue (including this first one). Check it out, and if you like it make sure to head into your local comic shop every month and start picking it up. Absolutely a fantastic book.

Why can't I buy comics online in pdf, or any other, format?

Piracy?

You can definately download a BUTT load of comics in PDF format not so legally.
But it's such a cheap medium, I don't see why you would download it.
It's more of a hobby, I guess. Never got into it. Except having the First symbiote (black spider-man or something) comic when I was younger. Got it from my father. I since sold it.

Because the comic industry is sadly really bogged down by the way their distribution and publication works. There are very simple and small forays into online publication being tested (such as this stuff at Newsarama and some stuff Marvel.com has been doing with having various #1's and story arc openers for free view on their site. Online purchasing is something that will probably happen in the future eventually, but it's going to be a slow road to get there.

Most pirated comics aren't actually in PDF format any more, but are in a special format (forget the name) that requires a "comic reader" program to open.

Where's my CBR file?
And since when do people spread comics as PDFs?

I picked up the first issue of this when it came out a couple of months ago. I've been very happy with it and aside from Ellis I'm a big fan of the artist, who also did work for the fantasticly dark 30 Days of Night series.

Thanks Kefka. This is awesome.

Glad to be of service! Lemme know what you think.

CBR or CBZ. They aren't actually special formats, they are just RAR or ZIP files with the extensions renamed. I'm not sure why that's done.

Ah, yes, that's it. They're like ZIP files? They don't work like ZIP files though. :(

It think it's good that they put Fell #1 online, but the resolution is so tiny that I doubt I will be able to get anyone to read it.

I noticed that, and it is kind of annoying, huh? Newsarama's stuff is always like that. I still usually don't have a problem reading it, but it's not the most comfortable, for sure.

Too god damn small! Now my eyes are all weird. Still, great comic if you take a big bag of drugs before reading, some of it confused the hell out of me until he got to the bar, then it made sense after that. Though that early confusion was likely caused by misreading the tiny text.

EDIT: Oh, and CoH comics are PDF

I was gonna say, I never found the thing too confusing. Then again, I'm used to Ellis's drunken ramblings. ;)

Awesome, I love Warren Ellis.

I just finished rereading Transmetropolitan which is my favourite series of all time, if you like Fell I suggest you look it up.

As to the CBR and CBZ files, they are just .rar (CBR) and .zip (CBZ) files with a different extensions so programs such as CDisplay can open and view the files sequentially from the archive allowing you to read the comics without extracting them.

I read both the first issue and the second issue of this series and I loved both issues. Of course, I'm a fan of Ben Templesmith anyway.

Seriously, how the hell can anyone read text on such a low resolution image. Guess you get what you pay for always.

Just press your face up against the screen like I did.

I agree wholeheartedly. Transmet is absolutely stellar. I've got all ten trades and have passed them around to my friends like mad. It's the easiest way I've found to get my non comic-reading friends interested in reading comics.

Templesmith's quite good, no doubt. Why haven't ya picked up the third ish yet, huh? :P

Thanks Kefkataran! I'm not a huge fan of the superhero comics, but if you give me something dark and/or twisted with a decent storyline--like this--I'm as good as hooked. Make sure you throw more recommendations my way in regards to comics, sans supermen in tights. I see enough of that stuff with fitbabits running around here in his cape and headgear.

Yeah, Ellis isn't a big superhero fan either, though he still writes them on ocassion. Seriously, check out his Transmetropolitan series. There's 10 volumes (11 if you include the supplementary but unnecessary Vol. 0), and they're all in trade and soooo worth getting. Very easily available and all. READ THEM.

Yeah, get the Transmet. Or Spider might have to come pay you a visit.

Also, go check out Promethea. It'll make your head hurt.

That's Alan Moore, right? I've slowly been working my way through his library. Started with the bigger stuff (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V For Vendetta, Watchmen) and just about to move onto the smaller stuff. I'll have to start with this one.

It's pretty good sized (32 issues) and I think it's his best work. Art is by J.H. Williams III, and it's usually what I think of when people ask about the 'best art in comics'. Some of it is rather difficult to read, by the way. It's very much a 'I'll talk about what I want to talk about, and you can come along or not' kind of book.

I dig that kind of book, so I'll for sure check it out. And more importantly, I ADORE Williams III. Speaking of whom: DESOLATION JONES #3 OUT TODAY. I better start up the comic thread for the week.
