Open world racing game FUEL has just been crowned by the Guinness Book of World Records for having the largest playable environment in a video game.
It covers the approximate area of Trinidad&Tobago, it’s larger than Hong Kong, Singapore, St Lucia and the Isle of Man put together. Innovative open-world racer FUEL™– launching on June 5th for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and a Games For Windows® edition to follow - boasts 5,560 square miles of accessible in-game terrain, making it officially the largest playable environment in a console game ever.
The accolade, presented to FUEL developers Asobo Studio, was confirmed by Guinness World Records, who have verified the record for inclusion in the next Guinness World Records Gamers Edition of the best-selling guide.
Guinness World Records presented Codemasters and Asobo Studio with a certificate that officially documents:
“Largest playable area in a console game: The largest playable environment in a console game is 5,560 square miles (14,400 km²), and is featured in FUEL (Codemasters, 2009). The area features rivers, deserts, forests and mountains and was demonstrated at the offices of Guinness World Records, London, UK, on 20 May 2009.”
I guess Guinness will award anyone, for pretty much anything... amirite?

Pretty safe to say that Guinness has jumped the shark.

Guiness once awarded me "Best guy named Brandon who plays Mass Effect in Racine, WI with Blonde Hair and Blue eyes and stood 6'2" and weighed 220lbs and had a wifey named Lynda, spelled with a y and four kids and with a dog named Brewer and two cats and one bird named Flapjack and owned and......" well, you get the idea....
Guiness used to be kewl, but since the Information Age, everyone gets a title, so who cares.
On the flip side, my boys love the books because they were always asking, "What's the biggest this and What's the biggest that? I don't know! Here's a book!

I'll claim the Guinness record of being the first person who claims a record for no reason.

On the PS3 I can see this having potential, with the medium having at least the capability to store a bunch more variety of textures, but on the 360 this could lead to endless copy/paste crap where buildings/scenery repeat over and over like atari's pole position from way back when.
of course unless they just decided to be lazy and do endless copy/paste for the ps3 as well...
but yeah, guiness records mean crap now.

Are you confident that the blu-ray drive would be able to stream all this extra content off the disk in time? It's to early to make assumptions like that.
Does anyone know if this will see light of day on PC?

It's space is cubic.

Computer games are not video games according to someone who decided so. Plenty of "computer games" have bigger worlds than Fuel.
As I wrote somewhere else, I want to see this 5,560 square miles of theirs. That's ten times the size of Test Drive Unlimited which has around thousand miles of road.

You know, I think this is kind of cool. Often times in racers you get bored of the roads/maps real quick. Even Crackdown got small. I don't know much about the award. But I am looking forward to Fuel a little bit, when I wasn't at all before. UMMMHHH?

I agree completely, there's some pretty slick technology behind this game and a ton of landscape to race on. You guys see that tornado footage? Freakin' sweet.

Totally amazing and I'm picking it up day 1. It would be really awesome to see this tech used for other genres of games as well....RTS, FPS, MMO....

FIrst thing I thought was that EverQuest would crush this game in size easy, but then I read they said "console". EQ has like 14 expansions and they keep releasing new ones so I don't think any other game will ever beat it.
I'm excited about Fuel but I hate empty worlds. Just Cause is case in point - when not fucking around the view from your plane just became a really long load screen.
Also they perhaps mean a single environment. MMOs all load sections or 'levels' - I've never played one that streams a massive open world.

You guys are so gullible!
Think about it. There are limited resources at stake here.
If chips are busy landscaping, they will not have a lot of time to pamper car and driver. Responsive controls, solid frame rates, and convincing automobile audio, rendering and physics are unlikely to be as polished as they were in DiRT and GRiD.

How about Elite? Thats a Video Game (according to Wikipedia). It came out on the NES.
You could fly every tiny bit of the huge galaxy they put in there. Flying right down onto planets.
This world record is BS
