Sega Genesis, the best console system ever, will be getting a new game (http://www.gamingsteve.com/archives/2006/01/sega_genesis_li_1.php) this coming spring. It's been 8 years since the last official Genesis game was released, but that didn't stop San Diego developer Super Fighting Team from releasing a brand new game for Sega's beloved system.

Beggar Prince (http://www.beggarprince.com/) tells the story of Steven, a bored prince who decides to escape his castle dressed as a beggar to experience life among the commoners. Of course with the prince gone the evil Minister usurps control of the throne and now Steven is barred from re-entering his own castle. Thus begins Steven's adventure of who must prove his identity and retake the throne.
Unfortunately the game is retailing for $46. I do still have my Genesis....tempting...very temping.

Someone apparently found a giant box of blank carts SEGA threw out and has too much time on their hands. :p

It doesn't even look that impressive. Most ROM teams like this release their products for free.

Too bad my mom sold my Sega for 5 bucks while I was at college. :(

NO! Best system ever was the SNES. Get it right.

Edit: Damn, this game actually DOES look interesting. Right up my alley. But I wonder why they just didn't release it on the GBA or DS. It would fit perfectly into that library.

I was a TOTAL Sega kid, and would fight that war to the death, BUT..... I do currently have a SNES, so I guess I better just be neutral.

I like my Sega and SNES, but SNES is my favorite console. But the Genesis has Gunstar Heros, one of my all time favorite games ever.

I was a Sega child until I got my SNES, then I became a true gamer and realized that you can easily have enough love for two systems.

I'm with Kelegacy here. I was the neighborhood SNES junkie, no doubt. Rented a Genesis a couple times and was never impressed.

This is a port of a Japanese game from '96 I think. All they've done is translate it.

I have to agree with Kefka and Kelegacy. I have a SNES (still do!) with a TON of RPG and adventure games (that system is what got me into RPG's, actually). There wasn't much on the Genesis that I liked even after I bought it.

I still dream fondly of my time(s) with Shadowrun, Super Metroid, FF2, FF3, Secret of Mana, Seventh Saga and more. :)

The Sonic series, X-Men 2 Clone Wars, Vectorman series, Ristar, and the Streets of Rage series would all like to have a word with you. I have MP3's I personally recorded, that I'd love to share with you.

So this is just a translation of a 1996 taiwan RPG then? It's not technically a new game. And it makes me wonder, is there not already a fan translation for it on the net? I thought virtually every classic RPG had been fan-translated.

I have no clue why they don't just sell a ROM download for a handfull of dollars.

I guess it's not like they're making genesis games for the money though.

Dammit. My Nomad (http://www.computercloset.org/SegaNomad.htm) just heard this and now it's begging for new catridge love. I'll just have to beat it till it bleeds.

I owned both systems, loved both systems... but the SNES was the clear winner. Still, it wouldn't have been the same without Sonic, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Kid Chameleon, Alex Kidd, and so on.

No way am I spending nearly $50 on a Genesis game, however.

Amen to that. The Genesis had some amazing music for its titles. The quality of the sound effects was rather poor in comparison to the SNES titles, as I recall. I do believe that had something to do with the memory restrictions on the genesis.

I tell you what, go set up a SNES & a Genesis side by side. Try play Super Street Fighter 2, and then try to convince me that the Genesis version doesn't have horrible audio.

SNES had better RPGs, adventure, action, side scrollers, wrestling, fighters, etc.

Genesis had better sports.

Even though Sega had blood in mortal kombat, I got to say that sound was atrocious.

Because then they would have to pay licensing fees.

You're going to ignore my numerous examples because genesis got one shoddy port?

When it came right down to it, Genesis excelled at rock and techno music, and SNES was best at piano and orchestra.

Now stop being a fanboy. I am still offering those mp3's to all who think the Genesis had poor music quality.

Also, go talk to Jesper Kyd if you think it sucks. He knows the Genesis audio chip better then anyone. His Subterrania soundtrack broke all it's limits. He's often replying to people on his forums.

Edit: Hell, here's some examples anyway. These are completely unedited, unfiltered digital recordings from a Genesis emulator:

http://studentpages.scad.edu/~cblair21/steve/1.mp3
http://studentpages.scad.edu/~cblair21/steve/2.mp3

I can't think of any SNES games that could do half of the audio effects present in these tracks.

Has it seriously only been 8 years? It feels longer than that. Well, that would put the last game around 98, so I guess that is right. Oh well, doesn't matter, on the playground I was on the Nintendo side of the fence throwing rocks at the Sega kids.

i donated all my old consoles ages ago, genesis, snes, nes, jaguar, etc. If i knew that someone would go out and make a game for it this many years ago... no i still wouldn't have kept them this long. Kelegacy has the right idea, with so little bits it should've went on the gba and it would also allow for more improvements. Interesting news though.

Genesis had some great RPG's too.. The Phantasy Star series was awesome.. Had a great strategy game too (Warsong), and plenty of other RPG's.. Its been a while since I played many of these though, and they seem to be harder to find than the SNES games..

And you can get the Phantasy Star collection (not sure of which games) on the GBA now. I need to pick that up, i missed them on the Genesis.

My Sega consoles--and I have owned every one except the Master and 32X add-on--always played second fiddle to the other systems I owned. Genesis/Sega CD < SNES. Saturn < Playstation/N64. Dreamcast < Playstation 2. They were all good systems (except the Saturn stinker) but didn't offer what I really craved in the game department, or in high enough quantities. Some gems will always be on my "best of" list, like Landstalker, but Sega always paled a bit in comparison to my other systems, unfortunately.

Sorta how Microsoft's Xbox systems are for me today, oddly enough. Maybe they ARE Sega reincarnated. Hmm.

The Genesis had the single best adventure game ever created: Landstalkers. And yes, you heard me right, better than ANY Zelda game.

I think the game actually looks pretty decent. Story seems original, at least. Combat looks like it would/could get really frustrating as it's always 1vsX enemies.

...Oh god, the great war isn't over!

Of course it is. Nintendo declared victory the day Sega started making games for Nintendo systems instead of its own.

As someone who was originally on the SNES side of the great war, I was pleased by this result, even if the death of the Dreamcast was a sad, sad day for gaming.
