Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz) is first with the details (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1963&Itemid=2).

Brit games magazine publisher Highbury House is up for sale. The troubled company has recently had its shares suspended, and has lost its high profile CEO Kelvin MacKenzie.

Highbury House is the last remaining significant rival to Future Publishing UK (trans-Atlantic sister of Future US, publisher of Next Generation). Future tried to buy Highbury House last year, but was thwarted by a British government monopolies commission. In the end, Future bought Highbury's hobby and entertainment magazines, excepting its games pubs.

A statement from Highbury today read, "Following the departure of Kelvin, a review of the Group's activities has been carried out and the Board has concluded, with the agreement of the Company's lenders, that the trading activities of the Group should be put up for sale immediately. The Company's lenders continue to be supportive of the Group.
Crap! gamesTM is my absolute favorite gaming magazine - I hope it finds a buyer. I'm distraught. I'm off to cry like a little baby.

Honestly I have not bought games mags in quite a while. PC Gamer was cool in the 90's and Nintendo Power in the late 80's and early 90's but these days I'd rather just get the news off the internet and not have to wait a month for them to print it on shiny paper and bury it between the millions of ads.

Ya... I'm with Netcraazzy. Evil Avatar and sites like it have taken the place of magazines in my life. Not only can I get news and reviews, but often I can talk back with my opinion, or contribute content myself. With my laptop I get the same portability I would have with a magazine as well.

I still get a few magazines -- subs to EGM, Computer Gaming World, and PC Gamer, and an ocassional Game Informer pick-up if I see a new ish at the grocery store and have an extra five dollars or so that I didn't need for anything else. Admittedly (and obviously), I get most my news online, but I rely on these more for in-depth previews, articles on gaming culture picking up events and releases (mods, indie games, etc.) that I might have missed, and reviews/editorial articles from people whose opinion I'm interested in reading.

Of course, as someone who's interested in eventually getting into the world of games journalism, I'm a little biased as far as my stance on reading game magazines. :p

Don't think I've ever read GamesTM, as it were.

The British PC Gamer is still full of quality writing - better than the internet, perhaps aside from The Escapist. I only get an issue or two each year (British relatives, mostly), mind you.

These days I pretty much get all my gaming info off the net as well. I don't think I've purchased a gaming mag since '98 - 2000.

But interestingly, thanks to registering Nintendo games on their web site, I've gotten 3 trial issues of Nintendo Power and I've got to say, wow, things sure have changed since my subscription ended nearly 10 years ago.

It's still pretty much a glossy Nintendo advertisement though. When you're young you're too dumb to realize that. :)

When I got my first sub, it really didn't matter. Outside of the NES, there weren't a whole lot of viable game options. Even in the 16-bit era, it was just the SNES and Genesis. So I picked up an EGM every now and then. I got out of it in the N64 era, when I realized that Nintendo was full of shit.

I'm cool with them again though. The N64 was a fucking nightmare though... clunky piece of shit.

What does EGM have to do with Nintendo being full of shit? :p
