WorldofWar.net (http://wow.incgamers.com/blog/comments/blizzard-new-mmo-based-on-new-ip/) has the scoop that a Blizzard representative confirmed the new MMO in development by the studio is based on a brand-new IP.

We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it’s a shell of a game thus far. We’ve already stated it’ll be a brand new franchise, which means the lore, art, and game play are being developed entirely from scratch. It’s an overwhelming process, but a process through which we excel. Our track record supports this.

I like the confidence!
It's like the rockstar developers of the 90's.

Gonna be exciting to see what they are up to. They have been accused of only refining game genres and never been innovative. Perhaps they got tired of it.

their track record of rehashing the same 3 IP's over the last 10 years does not compute...

Just out of curiosity why not link to the thread on the US forums here (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=16903519279&pageNo=2&sid=1#20) or the source that worldofwar.net quoted ?

Seems odd I had to click through 2 websites to reach the actual information. It's been pretty much assumed for some time now that it was a new IP and not based on anything they'd done before it is always nice to have official confirmation though.

World of Blizzard? A mash-up of all the Blizzard franchises with the final raid boss being Mike Morhaime.

haha their OWN content? Everyone knows that Warcraft and starcraft "borrowed" heavily from a certain Games Workshop franchise's ....

Should be interesting to see how original they make it.

This.

I'm excited about what it could be. I think they have some good creative minds there and some great game makers, though originality has never been Blizzard's strength. It'll be interesting to see what the gameplay of this MMO will be that will make it worth playing post-WoW.

The word "lore" makes me think of fantasy and I hope it won't be. I never got into any of the Warcraft games. Maybe a world of Diablo game? I'd go for that.

I really hope they come up with a different art style.

My guess: Blizzard has the Marvel IP.

While they're using a brand new IP, it doesn't mean they're going to innovate a damn thing. It's just not going to be related to their typical cash cows.

Ah, some other company has the rights to a Marvel MMO, I believe, a newbie even.

It will be interesting where this leads them. I wonder if they will have the guts to cut the game and move on if it doesn't jive like Warcraft Adventures or the shelved Ghost game. MMO's seem to cost alot more to make.

World of Warcraft cost Vivendi just over $63 million in initial development costs (over $200 million so far in upkeep).

Maybe their next game will be hitting close to the $100 million mark. I'm sure their overlords are plenty ready to dole out that much for their next MMO hit.

Looking forward to hearing something about it, though I do enjoy the lore of WoW. It'll be hard to leave that universe for something else, even if it manages to stick with the casual friendly gameplay that's made it so popular.

Which, in turn, borrowed ideas from elsewhere. Quick, someone call the originality police.

Yep. Its gonna be interesting how much they will differ this product from WoW. We have other MMO's coming out, that have a totally different playing system. Like the new Darkfall with full loot, and Mortal Online also this summer.

Will it be more hardcore or more casual?
There is no doubt that making a casual MMO (like WoW-in-space) will make billions of dollars, but the developers might want to try something a little different than just chasing the big bucks.

I also think it's unfair to say Blizzard has not been innovating. They have made some really innovative gameplay designs. They understand FUN. I don't see the fault in being inspired from different sources and refining to perfection plus adding cool systems. It's like wanting every game developer to make music like Radiohead does now - they are innovative, but I just can't listen to their albums after OK Computer for very long, even though I can see the brilliance and how other bands are being influenced by it.

You can also compare game innovation with fashion. Who wants to wear those stupid modren outfits coming from Paris? Noone. But the clothes we wear later on is a refined product influenced by these trends from Paris. Does that make our clothes less innovative?

If so I don't care about being innovative, because games having innovation almost always have issues, or do not exploit the possibilities enough. This is where Blizzard get inspiration and push the idea. I think they have the right design idea, but it could perhaps be dangerous if they keep chasing the big bucks, instead of trying different ideas. I think they have changed alot in the sequels - like Diablo2 and Warcraft3.

I recall that story about the newbie company, but my understanding was that would be more of a Disney toon city type MMO than a full MMO meant to compete with DC online, WoW, etc....

I guess time will tell. I think Blizzard could do some cool stuff with a few established licenses.

This is the Diablo MMO.

Don't let them spin you up with confusion.

A diablo MMO? That's not a new IP at all. In fact, they're releasing Diablo III sometimes soon, so why would they want to make an MMO of it?

I wouldn't be interested at all. What I would be interested in, however, would be some type of Mass Effect-like space MMO, done much better than Tabula Rasa, with an over-the-shoulder view or possibly first-person.

Yes, that would do nicely.

they don't have the marvel license and it's not a diablo mmo. a diablo mmo could never appeal to as wide an audience as WoW. it's a totally new property, as they said.

Blizzard's "borrowing" of ideas is far more blatant when you look at the connections between Warhammer 40k(which is drastically more original than Warhammer) and Starcraft. Two prominent examples are the Space Marine armor designs and the entire Tyrannid race.

Blizzard makes great games, but two of their major properties are filled with ideas ripped out of the books published by Games Workshop.
