According to Engadget (http://gaming.engadget.com/2006/01/03/sony-says-no-ps3-announcments-at-ces/), the PS3 won't be making much of an appearance at this years Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.
My bet: this puppy ain't coming out in the springtime to play.

You raise a sad story bap, I'll raise a happy one:
There's an ONSLAUGHT of BLU-RAY announcements !!! Dozens of 25 GB and even two 50GB movies !!! (Black Hawk Down, meh); Stationary players, PC players etc. Blu-Ray is serious @ CES 2006 folks. No holds barred!
YAY !!!
I'll try to submit them all (maybe in one humongous newspost) as soon as I get back from work - in 4 hours, nobody tries to beat me, mmmkay EA'ers?

meh...I just can't be excited about the video side of this stuff. I'm not interested in buying movies for a 2nd (or 3rd) time just for the hi-def.
Blu-Ray/HD-DVD = Laserdisc

I wonder if this means a delay of Halo 3?

I just can't get exicted either for Blu Ray or HD DVD for movies. I'm very happy with DVD at this moment in time.
I for one don't give a frick for HD Black Hawk Down :D
In games HD has given a breath of fresh air with the resolution and extra detail which has been added for console games etc.
However in films I can't see it giving as much improvement.
Is the actual source material in HD or is it just adding more lines to the same amount of detail recorded by the camera? I hope that is clear
I thought to take advantage of HD you would need a HD camera to film with?
I have a HD LCD TV which can do 720p and 1080i. I downloaded a 720p version of the Narnia trailer. I have to admit I wasn't impressed.

It all depends on the price I guess. HD movies will probably be relevant in 5 years. Right now companies are just trying to hype their way into your living room (or that of Borys ;) People need to buy HD televisions first ;)

Technically, film doesn't have a resolution. The HD quality would come from the film scanner used to create the digital content. Problem is, there IS a theoretical resolution to what a analog camera creates, you just can't measure it. A true HD digital camera will in general have a better image quality than something from an analog source that's converted.

I'm interested just because I love movies, but I'm not even going to bother looking at one or the either till one is edged out.

I figure no matter what HD format is ultimately settled on, I can probably safely ignore it for several years while things are still available on DVD, then skip it completely when some kind of on-demand system is worked out by cable companies or whoever. This will probably be the last time we have a debate over media storage.

What exactly would they show if they had anything? If you've seen the devkits you know they're a loooong way off from having one on a retail shelf.
Also, I'm very excited for Blu Ray. I started selling off my DVD collection when the new formats were announced. God damn it if I'm going to hold on to hundreds of dollars worth of 480p coasters... However I predict a muted reception to blu-ray's launch. Nearly everyone I know, including my mother, has bought a shelf of DVDs and they sure as shit are not in a hurry to replace them all with more expensive versions.
Until you can buy a 27" HDTV with a tuner for $300 HD will be a fringe market.

This just in:
DVD video looks great! The sound is fantastic! I've watched DVDs on 60" HD projection TVs and never had any complaints regarding video/audio quality. Old single-layer movies looked like ass but when was the last time you saw one of those?

It doesn't even have to be a showing of anything. Just some info. What games are coming out, what peripherals. Details of ANYTHING. Remember, launch was rumored to be March/April in Japan. That's only 4 months away or less. It'd be nice to know SOMETHING.

Good question. Bungie and Microsoft basically backed off of Gates' statement that Halo 3 would hit the shelves same day, but that could change if the PS3 is late.
My guess is that the longer Sony waits, the better chance that Halo 3 comes out the same day as the PS3.

They're going to be awfully close within the next 12 months. You can already buy a 27" HDTV without tuner for $400 (off-brand - "Insignia") and Samsung has a 27" HDTV with tuner for $550; and these are prices from Best Buy which isn't the place to go for the best discounts. By Christmas 2007 you won't be able to buy a new 27"+ TV that isn't an HDTV with tuner - certainly not from a major brand, and possibly not from anyone.

I think if you look back to the PS2 launch, you'll see the played their cards very similarly to how they are now. Hell, look at the PSP launch even -- same story. I think if you research a bit you'll find that PS2 (PSP also) wasn't even publically playable at an event until ~1 month before it launched.
If history tells us anything we can expect a launch around a month after its playable at some event. (although I'm putting my bet somewhere between may and june, instead of march/april like a feb playable ps3 would lead people to believe -- who knows though).
Additionally, the launch has always been "spring" -- spring, when a company says it, usually implies end of spring (may/june in this case)... or they'd say Q1. Don't bet on march, and don't assume thats what was implied (unless you have another source that says something besides "spring"?).
