Kikizo Games (http://games.kikizo.com/) has posted an interview (http://games.kikizo.com/features/id_johncarmack_interview_jan05.asp) with John Carmack from id. One of the highlights from the interview includes the revelation that the next project will NOT be based on one of their previous games:

We are working internally on a completely new project, but we haven't made any firm plans yet for the future of the Wolf, Doom and Quake franchises.
Thanks to Blues (http://www.bluesnews.com/) for the tip.

Thoughts?

I thought they said some time ago that they were working on a new IP.

360 first, PC later.

Carmack, you traitor, I bought all your games :(

My guess? It's a fantasy game about a muscled sweaty warrior chopping the heads off orcs and trolls. And there's possibly a quest for a spangly medallion of power.

The medallion of power is really a medallion of high sexual potency +10 to overpower nerdity. Problem is that it's like the triforce and doesn't distinguish between opposites. Therefore, it likes men too. Go figure!

Y'know what I want? A game built in his old D&D world, on the premise of the original Quake game. Tell me that the idea doesn't bring out the geek in ya?

Who cares, it will have a nice engine, but the game will suck.

Always up for an ID game.

Great, another four years of barn burning insightful comments that have never been said before, especially not multiple times a day, like the one two posts up. It's like a constant breath of fresh air and wisdom. I think we could all use some more Duke Nukem analysis as well.

Lets see, we've done zombies in space, zombie like aliens and zombies with nazis. I predict underwater zombies.

I though they were already doing a RTCW sequel?

Does it really matter what it's based on? The game will essentially be a tech-demo for the engine.

No offense to id --market pressure's a bitch-- but haven't they been intending to do 'something different' since quake2?

I heard through the grapevine that the new game would be called
Breechlove: Rise of the Chunkster

All I know is that after playing through the awesomeness of Quake 4, I'm chomping at the bit for Quake 5.

Actually, their engines aren't the best anymore so they better kick ass in the gameplay department this time around.

Their team is too small to compete with other game companies, so they'll really need to pull a wabbit out of a hat if they want to stay in this business. Frankly, I think Carmack has had enough and is seeking other interests.

Meh, I look forward to any id game.

I enjoyed both Doom 3 and Quake 4, and am eagerly anticipating Quake Wars. The new Wolfenstein is beinghandled by Raven/Splash Damage?

Woo, maybe we'll get something more then a glorified tech demo! No, that's probably too much to hope for.

Time for the Id MMORPG...

You guys do understand that the last ID game was Doom 3, which seemed to have been met with a luke-warm reception, with Quake 4, Quake Wars, Prey and Wolfenstien being done by other companies.

ID just makes engines, they've never really made a compelling game, with the exception of Q3A (IMO).

It's true... they better STEP UP their game (no pun intended), because this time around there are far superior engines out, pretty ooh and aah graphics aren't gonna do it, since everyone's already got that.

Sorry ID, but this time, it's put-up or shut-up.

Taco

Nope, the dozen or so people before you who said that don't understand it.

Interesting. I actually found Q3 to be the least compelling game they've ever made, but then again, I like single player games better than multiplayer.

Sorry ID, but this time, it's put-up or shut-up.I dare say the original Doom was much more than "just an engine" and quite compelling whether u liked it or not.

I really do think it's time for Id and Carmarck to "buck up" and make the MMORPG they've always seemed to hint at with the whole "Trinity" concept. Maybe some kind of Future vs. Fantasy, Hell vs. Heaven thing...

They always tout how Carmack is some kind of "network code genius"... Frankly I'm more impressed with how EQ and WoW operate than Quake or Doom...

Taco
01-04-2006, 11:55 AM
Well he pioneered the path that all non MMORPG games now take. He did it with Doom and did again two fold with Quake. I think that's how he gets that label. After those two there is only so much you can do to live up to your reputation.

Funny how u never hear about the guys who engineer the network code behind the wildly successful MMORPGS though isn't it? hmmmmmmmm.....

Taco

Probably cause about 30 guys worked on it ;). Quake was the first game to put so many people doing so many things on the screen and run so smooth. So it sticks out, despite the fact MMO's are more complex.

There can't be a new id Software game until key members of the team get fired, everyone knows this so don't fool yourself haha. I only wish I could guess at what type of new franchise they'll aim for. They have all the credit in the world as far as I'm concerned and I'm looking forward to what they have to offer. Just surprise us.

XenonCJ

Well... Let's see I guess we have to be realistic...

Id has to stick to it's small development team unless they change thier business model...

So I'm guessing games with tons of content are out. To me that means No MMORPGs or RPGs.

I think the possibilities are limited. Also I guess we have to assume they will not do an FPS this time?

Also I think we should probably assume Carmack will still want to make a new crazy 3D engine for this new game... But with the caveat that it must also be playable on the 360 and PS3.

To me this means Real-Time-Strategy is out since it's not easily doable on both console and PC.

So we have :
Racing - like PGR3 - I think there is SOME likelyhood of this since Carmack likes his fast cars... Maybe a racing battle game, like a serious version of Super Mario Kart?
Air combat - like that Xbox game Crimson Skies - some potential here I guess...
Fighter - like Soul Calibur or Tekken - I think this is unlikely.
Adventure - Like Tomb Raider - also very possible, but maybe not different enough from doing an FPS?
Sports - Like Madden 2006 - I think this is extremely unlikely
Unknown New Concept - Since I'm starting to be convinced that everything has already "been done", feel free to amaze me Mr. Carmack...

No one said an FPS was out of the question- in fact, that's probably what it is.

Taco
01-04-2006, 04:55 PM
Or some type of Adventure game, more like Fandango than Tomb Raider. Or even something in that genre, gasp, innovative? ;)

Funny how u never hear about the guys who engineer the network code behind the wildly successful MMORPGS though isn't it? hmmmmmmmm.....Eh, not really. I mean, in WoW for instance player collision isn't checked at all. You can have virtually limitless players standing in the same place and it's the same as being in a confined area. With a FPS you'd have to have them bumping into each other, pushing each other, standing on top, etc. And with MMOs hit percentage has nothing to do with actual collision, just range and a skill point factor. In short, MMOs have much smaller data transfer per player over time.

I'm not saying that MMOs are completely unimpressive. I'm just saying that when Quakeworld was released, it rocked the fucking house. And there hasn't been another similar leap since.

Savok

CoH has collision detection, as does EVE.

Speed_D
01-05-2006, 01:25 PM
I'd say that MMORPGs which don't use player-collision detection are built that way to avoid the endless griefing that results (see: old-school Everquest: Solusek B ogre walls), not due to technical reasons.
