FiringSquad has word (http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=21631) that Microsoft has confirmed Windows 7 will be released later this year.

LOS ANGELES - May 11, 2009 - Microsoft Tech•Ed North America 2009 kicked off today with announcements of new technologies that enable IT professionals and developers to help their organizations save money and improve efficiencies during difficult economic times. As part of today's news, Microsoft Corp. announced that the company is anticipating that the next version of its client operating system, Windows 7, will be available to customers in time for the holiday shopping season. In addition, Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate (RC) is available today with the final product releasing to market in the same timeframe as Windows 7.

I'm running the RC on my desktop and love it. I didn't have to download any drivers at all, not even the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers.

Er, let me be a little more clear: I didn't have to manually go to NVIDIA's website: the drivers were in Windows Update.

I am tempted to buy Windows 7 on day one. I have never been even remotely interested in updating to a version of Windows pre-SP1, but if the 64-bit version runs better than Vista, I am definitely interested.

I was all for it and had put it on the day before yesterday but took it off today. My first problem was having two monitors plugged into my PC it would not get past the updating registry part. That took a while to solve but what really made me take it off is it would not recognise the external HDD I had put all my stuff on. What I saw of it though was really impressive and if these problems are gone by then then I am in!

running RC on my corei7 gaming PC for a month. Very few issues. Sleep mode is busted. It either doesnt shut off my case fans, automatically wakes back up in a half second, and/or after waking, my hard drives do rapid fire power off/on spazms for eternity until I reboot. This needs to be fixed, and I may actually purchase 7. Very few other issues. Maybe 10% of my bootups get snagged at a BSOD. Not sure what thats about. Needs to be fixed also. Otherwise it runs much faster than Vista does on here.

Running RC1 and so far so good however they need to fix the wonky sleep mode which for some odd reason never works (but works perfectly in Vista).

For somebody still rocking XP on his Windows box is this Vista-fixed-and-resold or something entirely different?

I installed the beta onto my laptop. The laptop chugged on Vista so I had been on XP.

With Win7 and under the same program load my machine was at least as fast or faster than with XP. A vast improvement over Vista and a slight one over XP.

Many more improvements.. Interface wise and low-level

Obviously not knowing everything about your system I can't be sure, but you may have a motherboard issue. If you do, it could be either hardware or driver. But I think it is possible that all of your problems are caused by your motherboard. Being a RC, Windows 7 may be the cause but I would suggest looking for updated motherboard drivers.

I don't get that, either. I've never known anyone to have "New OS" on their Christmas wishlist.... Maybe that means my friends aren't geeky enough?

Uh, do you happen to know anyone that has a new computer on their Christmas wish list?

Using the RC client on my computer right now and it's fantastic, especially for someone who was sporting XP for the last few years. Huge performance difference in many of my games and applications.

Uh, do you happen to know anyone that has a new computer on their Christmas wish list? That would be me. I got my wife a laptop last year, this year it's my turn if the budget permits (my toys tend to cost more than the wife's).

I am thinking about purchasing this on release day.

I feel extremely dirty saying that about a Microsoft product.

I like the Device Stage thing. I hope that a lot of manufactures add support for it. Also, it'd be nice {never going to happen} if they coded all their old hardware for the last year or two as well.
