Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/) is reporting (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=62298) that the Nintendo DS is finally getting an online RPG.

It's been revealed that Contact, a new game currently in development for the DS, will work with the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service - making it the handheld's first online RPG.

Contact is being produced by Gouichi Suda, director of Capcom's schizophrenic shooter Killer 7. It follows the adventures of a boy called Cherry who's tasked with helping a nutty professor find all the lost components of his spaceship
About time. It doesn't sound like the best premise of an RPG but Suda's previous work has been great, so it will be interesting to see the final product.

It's the adventure of a robot named Soy who's looking for his twelve human cousins, who have all been lost in the mind of a psychic dog.

Sure? Why not?

Compared to Grasshopper's other games, this one sounds and looks pretty much down-to-earth. But I bet it isn't.

I also don't think the online functions will be big.

It probably depends on how much use the WFC system is getting. One nice thing about Nintendo's system is that they know how many DS systems are connecting to the service, how often they're connecting and how many true connections between systems are made.

Considering one of Nintendo's biggest sellers is Animal Crossing, a game that - apart from online and a few minor tweaks - is virtually a direct port from the Gamecube, they're probably feeling very different about online compared to a couple years ago. I know of at least one MMOG supposedly in development for the PSP (the DC superhero game that's supposed to hit PC, PS3 and PSP) and it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone jumped on that bandwagon for the DS. Maybe massively multiplayer Harvest Moon? :)

Portable MMOs? That just seems like a bad idea. How long do you think it would be before someone died trying to play while driving?
