From Revo Europe (http://www.revo-europe.com/):

DFC Intelligence (http://www.dfcint.com/game_article/dec05article.html) have released their latest piece of research on the game industry, revealing how all game companies have fared from February to December. The first piece of good news is that the industry itself has grown by 7 percent, and as Nintendo always say, an increase in gamers is always a good thing.

Nintendo have had a fairly successful year, with a growth of 15 percent since last February. With their current market value of $18,565, Nintendo are worth the fourth highest amount of money in the industry, trailing only behind Microsoft, Sony and Vivendi. EA, however, had a disappointing year with a drop of 17 percent.

The article also discussed what's coming in 2006, and what's happening on store shelves. They found out that the Nintendo DS is doing very well in stores, while the PSP's space is focused too much on UMDs, not on games.

"The biggest disappointment we have found so far is what we would consider to be very weak merchandising for the Sony PSP. Many stores have displays for the Nintendo portable systems, but not the PSP. What is worse is the tendency for stores to have a larger selection of UMD movies than PSP games. Furthermore, the movies are often mixed right in with the games. The portable battle is likely to get very interesting over the next two years."

As a new handheld/DS owner I've gone into quite a few shops and been surprised by how little DS software is sitting on shelves compared to PSP software. Maybe this explains it...

Sega is number six.

SEGA? Sega is worth over half of what EA is? Sega is worth over twice of what Namco is? Sega is worth more than three times what Square or Konami is?

Sega?

TEN times what Take Two is?

SEGA?

Wow.

.... sega?

...That was the point. The PSP's are sitting there, the DS's are moving. Their goal is not to have their handhelds looking pretty on a shelf.

there's a reason for that. EB/Gamestop had a rough year last year (2004)because of hardware shortages and didn't want a repeat performance for 2005. once it became apparent that microsoft was going to come up short on shipments of the xbox 360, they looked to the next newest, next expensive piece of hardware... the psp. there was a huge holiday push for the thing. my local eb had a guy walking around just showing off one to customers.

i'm not saying that the psps isn't doing well in it's own right. in the US it's keeping pace pretty nicely (most of the time). but you have to show someone who isn't interested in portables why it's worth $250.

Nintendo is DOOMED.

Let us see how doomed Nintendo is after the Revolution is truly unveiled. I showed an image of the controller to my wife who is in an average gamer (she still hasn't played our 360), and she was really excited. I also mentioned the back catalogue of games and she was like "we should get two so we can wi-fi play eachother in the house".
Just look how well the Xbox arcade is doing, and those are only a few games. Most half-ass ports (Smash TV?) with only one true standout (Geometry Wars?). Imagine when all of the older people who stopped gaming due to the complexity of gaming finding out they can go back to the days of simplicity but still be apart of the current trends in gaming for a low price. Never underestimate Nintendo. Just look at the overall sales of the DS, everyone was calling it a gimmick....now it wipes its ass with the PSP.

Deservedly So.

Think of all the amazing properties they own 100%?

Sega is easily a bigger gaming company than all of them, regardless of their misfortunes in the past.

I've yet to be able to play a PSP for myself since it's launch. The one person I know who has one refuses to let anyone touch it, and I've never, ever, seen a demo unit in a store.

I don't see any reason to get a PSP. I don't think Sony knows what to do with it as a gaming device, or doesn't want to. So I went with a DS.

I finally saw a PSP display in a Toys R Us. The power was off because it was in sleep mode, and since the power switch is partially blocked by the demo unit plastic holding thing and it's fairly hard to understand how to use the switch if you've never seen a PSP before. I turned it on and played a bit, got bored and left.

Not Necessarily. i was talking to a couple of eb store personel, and they were telling me that the psp is out selling the ds, i dont think this was in all stores. really does depend on who is working there.

oh and also add in the fact australian get games a couple of months late, or if ever.

these ads are actually pretty clever, ill see if i can take a photo of one
basically its advertising a psp sudoku game ;) also one other, but i cant really remember.

it just feels like nintendo kinda forgets about us down here, or they dont really bother to advertise much. last nintendo ad i saw was for nintendogs, and it was pretty bad.

I think it's pretty clear all of Sony's money that is being dumped into the PSP is going into advertising and pushing the UMD agenda.

I'll stick with the DS. Advertising and global domination with proprietary shit doesn't appeal to me, personally.

current sales data puts the DS and PSP nearly neck and neck in both hardware and software sales in the US. neither system is a failure by any means. both are making money, both are seeing consistant releases from quality developers. i think it'll continue that way for the forseeable future.

My brother, a new PSP owner, was complaining about the fact that he can't find any games for it but can find 400 movies wherever he goes. I feel kind of bad for him, but then I remember my pile of DS games at home that I'm itching to play and I laugh at him.

The PSP is one heck of a gorgeous movie player though.

I don't think Nintendo is going anywhere. I'm glad their market value is going up, I'm glad the DS is doing well, I hope the Revolution becomes the highwater mark in the next generation. I'm VERY happy with the DS and today was the first time I had ever held a demo unit in my hand. 10 minutes later and I owned one, along with Mario Kart and Trauma Center. Some people might remember me saying that I despised the DS from the onset, hated Nintendo when the Gamecube was released--but I had changed my tune dramatically recently. If me, a Nintendo expatriate during the 2000's, can fall back in love with the company, ANYONE can. I'm not even interested in the PSP, though I love the Playstation 1 and 2 more than any other console in recent memory. Again, it's the games that drive me wild, not corporate bias.

It doesn't hurt that their hardware is built to outlast nearly every other, and their games are some of the most pure, unadulterated fun to be had anywhere.

Jesus, I've become a goddamn fanboy.

I plan on picking up a DS for travelling this summer. I'm hoping we'll see some low prices on greatest hits games.

As far as veiwing movies, I can get a really tiny DVD player to hook up to the TV's in the hotel rooms. I don't really enjoy small screen shows. Don't get me wrong, I like Sony and I think they will make an awesome box in the PS3. I just don't think their handheld is meant for a guy like me (that is a value obsessed, semi afraid of tech, nerd wannabe).

I have both and I love them both...the PSP is nice when hacked as you can play all those old games that will be on the revolution next year for free right now ( emulators ) also you can go online with the PSP , watch movies and finally it seems this year will bring a lot of games too..the latest POP port plays and looks fantastic on the PSP. The DS has more games and is real fun to play with as well.

The DS can do the same thing. Just pay $50 for a flashcard, and then go download some emulators. There won't be a firmware upgrade that will destroy this functionality either.

Is that the price for a 1GB card? I'd be highly interested in doing that.
