View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

Happy New Year! The weekend is here and while some gaming time will be cut short by those who go celebrate - there still the daylight hours. As I try to get over the flu (the flu not covered by the flu shot), I hope to be able to play some City of Heroes, World of Warcraft - when I am not playing Gothic 2. This all depends on how I feel - you know you are sick when you either sleep all day, or looking at a computer makes you feel worse. What are your plans for this weekend? Any resolutions?

It's a very good game, can't belive I waited so long before picking it up :)

God of War, and loving it. I waited too long.

Also might pick up a DS this weekend. The anticipation has reached its peak. Kelegacy must succumb to the Splenda of handhelds.

Submerged in 360 games over here the past week now that I have the system. More PGR3, NHL2K6, and PD0 while I pop Condemn's cherry and try out the Quake4 free demo too.

This seems to be an annoying tradition in fighting games. The newer street fighter bosses were awful and so was tekken 5. I saw a 360 kiosk running doa4 and I was very underwhelmed. I was disappointed the character models looked the same and the graphics weren't that great. Definately did not scream next gen. Hopefully, the gameplay is better.

I finished playing God of War and am now tackling dragon quest viii. The quest seems like it will never end!

As I try to get over the flu

Same here. Those of us in Phoenix are getting hit pretty hard with the flu bug. I've had it since Monday night, and it shows no sign of easing up its assault on my body. My poor white blood cells are exhausted! Sleeping and watching bowl games are the only two activities I've been able to handle.

The Dragon Quest will not end for some time. Upwards of 80 hours...or more.

If I was a reviewing man, if I was actually in the mood to write for free currently, I'd give--according to the Evil Eye system--Dragon Quest VIII a 4 or 4.5 out of 5 to people who have loved the Dragon Quest/Warrior series in the past (the nostalgia is part of the fun), or a 3.5 to people like me who never beat another Dragon Quest game in their lives. I was very young and not into RPGs when the originals were on the NES, and VII I only rented and played for a couple hours before having to return it. I liked the game, though it offers nothing new to the genre, the frequent battles wore on my nerves eventually, and the story is pretty generic. But that is the part of the charm of the game...it does the "done before" stuff so well it's hard not to like it.

My DS is now on permanent loan to my mother, so I went on a post-Christmas binge and bought a DS, 802.11g access point, Animal Crossing: Wild World (rocks), Advance Wars: Dual Strike (rocks hard), Metroid Pinball (rolls), and Nintendogs (pees). It is therefore safe to assume that I will be spending a ridiculous amount of time playing all of these games, probably with a little Meteos to cleanse the gaming palate. :)

No, not this year. Since my body always seems to invite the virus in for a drink before it's had time to build up antibodies the years I get the shot, I decided to skip the shot this year. From my perspective, I made out this year since the end result is the same (flu) sans the shot! :D

Oh, and Kelegacy, most routers also have a button in their config to go back to factory settings, or to save a config and restore from it later. So they can be a really great educational tool for learning how networking works.

Because the games are actually unique and fun?

:)

I'm playing the "Welcome back from vacation, now get to work" game for the next two days. Thankfully I have Monday and Tuesday off, which means I can celebrate my anniversary AND play some DS games.

I'm probably going to crack open Phoenix Wright and Mario & Luigi over the course of the next day or two. Otherwise, I'll just get to work on Trauma Center, Advance Wars DS and then putter around with the other 4 games on the DS that I have. I've been scouring the area looking for a copy of Animal Crossing DS but so far can't find a copy. I'll just wait for a few weeks until it gets back in stock.

Speaking of which, I brought back my second DS and picked up another one. That's right. 3 DS's in 5 days. The guy at EB said that my two defective ones were the only two he's had brought in for the entire Christmas season. Go figure. Thankfully I cracked the system open right there and didn't leave until I made sure there wasn't a dead pixel on the top screen. Of course, I haven't turned it on since (I had to drive back home and have spent the last few hours unpacking Christmas presents and such) so I'm kind of paranoid that there will be something wrong with the DS when I turn it on. That's just the kind of luck I have with technology.

I'm planning on having a New Year's Day party with a few friends and we'll probably watch The Frighteners, Serenity (for the 5th time) and play Guitar Hero... with two guitar controllers. WOOO!

Hopefully by Monday I'll get back to playing DQ8. I spent a grand total of about an hour playing it over the last week, much to my chagrin. I did fire up Ratchet & Clank:UYA and that was a lot of fun. I just seemed to be in more of a twitchy mood this week and DQ8 just didn't fit into my gaming mindset. Sigh.

Not in college just a girl from works party, though I'm scared to drink a whole lot or fall asleep, because apparently I'll tell you anything while I'm drunk, and talk in my sleep. If reveal that I am infact Batman then I'm really fucked. That could make for a shitty work environment.

I resisted for most of this week but ended up getting it yesterday and in a 4 hour marathon I unlocked all the characters (well, most of the main ones). Kelegacy: On the access point, I bought a Linksys and it worked out nicely - plugged it into a switch and about five minutes of configuration later it was up and running. The only warning I would offer is that the Linksys configuration software didn't set up security by default when using the automatic settings. I opened the program up again, checked the settings and then was prompted to select encryption method(s).

So, if you go for some wireless action, be sure to read the security section of the manual to make sure you can at least discourage most potential "intruders" and keep your bandwidth and network to yourself and those you specifically authorize. :)

Taco

For you flu people, did you get the shot? The flu that I have, and that a lot of other people are getting is the California flu - it was not in the flu vacine this year. It didn't matter that I had my shot if it is not in the vacine. The number of flu cases in Arizona doubled in a week -and pretty much all of it was the California flu (If I remember correctly, it is a new strain of flu that started in, you guessed it, California). They are hoping it doesn't spread much further then the Western states - but, with the way people travel... Oh my gosh there is just so much to play.

I need to finish Wind Waker before Twilight Princess comes out. My wife (God bless her) got me the Zelda compendium disc for Gamecube with Zelda 1,2,OoT and Majora's Mask on it, which means I have a lot of old Zelda replaying to do, too.

Snagged RE4 for $10 from Toys R Us's sale, so my first playthrough of that is incumbent. Need to finish Hulk:Ultimate Destruction, and Battalion Wars. If I could get through Paper Mario 2, that'd be a bonus, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Just don't have time.

And that's just on Cube... on PC, I still don't have a L20 Guild Wars character, though I'm getting close, and Civ IV continues to sit and stare at me, begging me to conquer the Earth. Not to mention great indie games I've picked up recently like Minions of Mirth (http://www.minionsofmirth.com), Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com) and Fate (http://www.playfate.com).

What a great time to be a gamer... I just wish I was back in college again and had time to actually get through the pile. :D

WOW, TOEE, Stubbs. Although I will be mainly NOT on the computer for family time and festive stuff. ;)

Everyone have a safe New Years Eve, so we can all be here together again in 2006.

Making way through Mario Kart DS and unlocking everything again *sigh*.

Trying to find a copy of Castlevania DS. I've been to almost everyshop here and no one has it. Even on line everyone seems to be sold out.

So, are those copies from Hong Kong that sell for £10 on ebay dodgy?

Very. My brother bought one for a GBA Castlevania game, coincidentally. I don't remember which exactly, but it turned out to be a buggy, steaming pile. He wasn't able to get his money back from the bastard so he reported them to Nintendo, who I'm sure put the screws to them.

I dropped WoW this week, and picked up CoH. Is there an EA Supergroup on any server?

Also, PS2 RE4, maybe finally win God of War, Guitar Hero. It's a good time for gaming.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, the game is so dam fustrating but i keep going back to it
Let me guess... You're at the Ring of Fire? Or the 2nd chariot race? By far the most frustrating gaming moments of the year for me. The game is awesome, but those two spots almost killed it for me.

Why is it I enjoy the DS so much more than my XBox?

Heh, I've been having the same "issue." I've got a ton of great Xbox games, but they're second fiddle to the likes of Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing WW, Castlevania DS and Advance Wars DS.

Started playing Castlevania yesterday, my first since the original 2 on the NES. Another fun game. Still haven't tried Advance Wars.

I've been hooked on that Metroid Pinball DS game, fun little thing. Want to give Castlevania a shot as well.

Why is it I enjoy the DS so much more than my XBox?

I've been wondering the same thing, but in my case it's an Xbox 360. I took my 360 home with me for Xmas and I didn't play it once; I just played my DS the entire time. There is something very wrong with the fact that I just bought a $1600 HDTV a $400 console and have a $400 surround sound system and I sit on my couch ignoring all this technology to play my Nintendo DS.

Both my brothers got DSs for Xmas which I borrowed to take over friends when I was home. There was much fun playing MarioKart and Metriod Pinball while bar hopping. In fact, one of my friends is trying to find a DS now (they are sold out everywhere) just to play Metriod Pinball because he became addicted to it. I also got Animal Crossing and Sonic Rush for Xmas so I have a ton of great stuff to play on the DS. When I can carry three DSs with me easily and pass them out to friends to play the best version of Mario Kart anywhere at anytime, I start to see the value and the power of portable systems, which I've never been a fan of before. The DS is just awesome.

I was the same way only I had my PS2, DQ8 and a stack of other PS2 games that I was planning on playing over the past week and all I did was play my DS.

Yet again, further proof that it's the games, not the technology, that really matter. Nice to see.

'Tis the Christmas of the DS.

Well I did it.. I caved in and got the DS and Mario Kart bundle. I just couldn't resist. If I don't buy anymore games for 6 months I'll still have plenty to play.

So weekend will be Mario Kart, NFSMW, Psychonauts, Civ4 and possibly Advance Wars DS... not enough time in the weekend.

Just fired up Phoenix Wright today and it is amazing. It's the perfect counterpart to Trauma Center, which was making me its bitch last night.

Phoenix Wright is all about logic and poking holes in arguments. Good thing I got lots of training here on EvAv :)

Trauma Center is about multitasking your way to insanity and having people die. I was ready to put my stylus through the screen on my 4th attempt to save this guy's spleen yesterday. People as sick as the people in Trauma Center should just die! I wouldn't be so frustrated then.

I love them both!

Plus Phoenix Wright is just funny.

OBJECTION! HOLD IT!

Oh god, I want to play that game. How much is an extra guitar controller?

I have an acoustic guitar, started teaching myself in college, but no more! I'll take the easy route and play Guitar Hero with a fake guitar.
Just buy the two guitar bundle from redoctane.com . That's the cheapest way to go, and I'm kicking myself for not doing that myself.

Is Kelegacy being a test subject so he can fund his low budget game about an musician travelling through Mexico? Should we tell him about Total Overdose?

Kelegacy, are you any good at Trauma Center, by the way?

I just made sure my friends loved the game so much they bought their own copy. They just bring it over when they want to jam.

That said, supposedly they're releasing a standalone guitar controller... at least, that's according to the schlubs at the local EB. Is this true? I knew about the double pack, but if the price is right for a controller sans game, that'd be worth picking up.

The website has a red guitar for $50. I thought there was supposed to be a black one for $40, but I didn't see it on the site. They might be out of stock.

I picked up a few games at Toys 'R' Us' $9.99 clearance. The only one I've put any real time into so far is Killer 7, which is compulsively playable despite being a basically terrible game. Does this make it a good game? It's all so confusing.

I got addicted to Killer 7 while I rented it. It is rather trippy and so different from most games that you can't help but see where it takes you.

That said, I recommend finishing it up and THEN looking up one of the plot FAQ's to get all of the hidden meanings and symbology in the game. I read a really good one that clocked in at around 50 pages and when you put all of the various hypotheses together as to the meaning of the game and the characters, it's pretty neat.

That said, I wouldn't pay more than $9.99 for it :)

How do you decide? Is it how well it hits the 'good game checkboxes' or how well it entertains you?

Kelegacy, are you any good at Trauma Center, by the way?

I don't have it. I'm thinking that it will be one of my early titles to buy for the DS, though. All this talk of getting one and I haven't yet. Busy weekend. I am going out tomorrow to return a crapload of clothing I'll never wear from Xmas, so I'll stop by and pickup a DS MK package and maybe another game, though I don't know which yet. Might also grab a router.

And you all should be thanking me. It is my successful testing of vaccines and drugs that the rest of you can live healthy lives. I don't have testicles, my hair and teeth are falling out at the ripe age of 25, my skin is peeling off in large swaths, I secrete a yellowish-gray substance from my urethra, and my bowels produce only water, but it pays the bills. I recently failed a toxic drug from GlaxoSmithKline that made my eyes tear blood, and the payoff was great. Now I can get that DS.

If you can find it, grab Trauma Center, Meteos and Phoenix Wright. You'll of course have to get Mario & Luigi as well as Advance Wars at some point, but Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright will knock your socks off.

Warioware is a heck of a lot of fun too. My friends were just over playing it on my DS tonight and couldn't stop laughing.
