I don't think I could handle another "difficult because of a lack of intuitive design" RPG.

I, however, certainly can... and I wait for them intently!

I would love an old school JRPG... back when shops didn't only miraculously carry the next level up of every single weapon your character has no matter how obscure that weapon is. And when managing your money between items and upgrades was actually difficult and could mean the difference between life and death once you set foot outside thet town. When exploration was as important or more important than linear narrative so that it felt like more than just Final Fight with a seperate screen for battles. When characters had definite strenghts and weaknesses meaning that a character being added to or removed from your party radically impacted the way you played the game. When your brain had to be thinking about a battle 3 or 4 turns in advance to succeed and an unexpected move from your opponent sent you scurrying to reorganize and change your strategy.

Man... loved it. Modern JPRGs suck.

Old school RPGs are great. Etrian Odyssey (which was a beautiful blend of old meets new) is, in my opinion, one of the best throwback games. However, I'm about 20 hours into The Dark Spire, and this is basically my first 20 minutes:

1) Roll Warrior, Thief, Priest, Mage. Assemble party.
2) Training tutorial.
3) Enter dungeon.
4) Fight!
5) Thief dies.
6) Party carries dead thief back to town.
7) Priest says, "I need one hundred golds to revive him!"
8) /purse "The purse has 36 gold in it. Now what?"

/sigh

I spent 4 hours grinding to get my warrior properly outfitted, and for my guys to be level 3 before I even began exploring. The difficulty curve is immense, there is absolutely no additional information on -anything-. So although it's balls-in-a-vice hard, accomplishing anything in this game is damn rewarding.
