GameSpot has posted a hands-on preview (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/adventure/dantesinferno/news.html?sid=6208578&mode=news) of EA Redwood Shores' upcoming action game, Dante's Inferno.

The demo level on display picked up in a familiar spot, on board Charon--the living ship that ferries doomed souls across the river Styx. We saw Charon in our previous look at the game, and the encounters on board still play much the same. First up was a group of minor enemies that we took out with a few swipes of the scythe. They were followed by another group of minions and a couple of demonic-looking bad guys, as well as some flying enemies that were vaguely reminiscent of the Mutalisk in Starcraft. After that, it was the biggest baddie of them all, a huge, lumbering beast that climbed over the side of Charon to stand on deck. The beast was being piloted by a humanoid riding atop the demon's neck and, to take him down, you first had to soften the demon up with some scythe strikes before climbing on top of it and engaging in a short quick-time event, a la God of War. Once you complete the quick-time sequence, Dante will defeat the demon's rider and take control of the beast himself.

Very much looking forward to playing this game. Excellent setting/theme for an action game, though I am fatigued by QTE's at this point.

I'm not. Although I agree that hell is a great setting, I'd much rather play through it in an Oblivion/Fallout 3 type of way. Give me a FPS-style, open-ended "mind-fuck" through hell, not a 3rd-person action game.

3rd-person action games don't really do it for me. The last one I liked was LOK: Soul Reaver. But, I haven't owned a console in a while.

*Now, if they split it up {back to Dante's Inferno} as half-FPS and half-Adventure, that'd probably be too much awesome for one game.

But no

Considering the linear book, and how Dante was guided the entire time, it seems like it would be difficult to create an open-ended game with this IP.

It'd be like, "Explore this level and come back to me when you've discovered its importance." "Suicide is wrong. I love Jesus." "Correct, fight your way to the next level."
OR
Brutus could give you a quest asking, "Hey man, can you give me some hot chocolate?" Of course, as a Christian, your only answer can be, "No. You earned your fate. Praise Jesus."

The Inferno is just a man walking through hell, showing us his morals, and making fun of everyone else at the time. How can that be open-ended?

Back to the preview, I always envisioned more red and black, as opposed to red and brown. something more like the EvAv color scheme would be great.

I get your point, but if they are going to change the story and give his a large Scythe to beat some ass with, why not change the "linear-ness" of the story?

I just hope this game some some incredible imagery, as it would otherwise just be a waste of the license.

Wow. There's no way for me not to sound like a high brow asshole here. I've studied Inferno a ton when I was at Uni. Inferno always struck me as a somber journey and not an adventure. Dante was horrified by the thing he saw. What's next? The Great Gatsby turned into an FPS?
I like the idea of a game exploring religious mythology but why not create a new character and co-opt the mythos instead of directly relating to it?

Scholarship aside, this looks like it'll play like Castlevania: Curse of Darkness or Devil May Cry, which are both fun in their own right. I do hope that as he descends into hell the colors get colder.

Goddamn, I just can't wrap my mind around Dante Alighieri, DEMON SLAYER.

What the what? Why make a game with a foregone conclusion that Devil May Cry did it all better?

Like make it into a satire of modern times?

Yeah, I could go for that. That preview doesn't mention how close they plan to stick to IP, though. :(

or, if you're evil, upon finishing the game, it tells you what level of hell you go to depending on what you did. lol...
