One of the downsides of the 360's Media Extender function is the limitation to AVI and WMV files. Divx, XVid, Quicktime and other popular video formats are not supported officially. However, the collective mind of the internet (or some guys on some forums) figured out ways around it.
Check out this post (http://forums.xbox.com/1235568/ShowPost.aspx) for info on broadcasting your files.
Also check out this post (http://forums.xbox.com/1275008/ShowPost.aspx) for a Media Center Only solution.
Excellent, can't wait to get home and try this.

This would be neat if I had a bundle of money to spend on a Media Center PC!

"Secret Wife's Club" hentai advertisements? Jeez, why not just start posting XXX ads. I automatically have to scroll down and miss the first two postings so that advertisement isn't visible on my screen.
The permanent solution is not working as far as I can see.
You can play the DivX on the WMC, but you need to codec working also on the Xbox360 - which it does not.
Or trick it by doing the stuff in the first link.
It will probably only be a matter of time before VLC can play through Xbox360.

Ah...thanks. I misread that post. I updated the mainpost to reflect that.

I can understand MS' eagerness to push XP Media Center Edition and their reluctance to support tons of third-party stuff, but I really wish that the 360 would just work as a standard UPnP client. I've been using a Roku PhotoBridge and Nero's MediaHome server to broadcast all sorts of video to my home theater, and I'd love it if I could use the 360 for that.
My understanding is that MCE's video server is basically UPnP with locked-down settings and some extra authentication, so I'm hoping that Nero or some other enterprising developer will figure out a way for their software to emulate MCE and fool the 360.

Almost certainly... nothing MS can do about that I think, you can just sniff the packets being send over the wire. Only a matter of time before other Media Servers work on 360.

It is frustrating because most of my video library is in divx, The 360 can play about 1/8 of everything I have.
It's stupid really, MS wanted to include media center functionality because that was one of the main reasons people would mod the original xbox and then they neuter it by forcing their standard when it comes to video, the console can play mp3's just fine....

I'll stick with my modded Xbox and Xbox Media Center. It plays everything.

Are there any utilities out there that can pretend to be a USB drive? That seems like it would be a useful way to mimic some MCE functionality.
