GI.biz (http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=13771) has the story straight from Microsoft that they are currently on target to meet their goal of 2.75 - 3 Million units sold in the first 3 months, with large shipments of Xbox 360's hitting US shores weekly.
Kinda crazy how popular this thing has been. Gamestop here still hasn't even filled all of their preorders, which is pretty sad. Going to be interesting to see what happens when Halo 3 makes it's debut.

My local EB says it might be until March before they have all the pre-orders taken care of from before Christmas. :(

Strangely enough, my local Toys-R-Us had 9 premiums and 7 cores, and no line at the door on Thursday.
I walked in about an hour after open, and to my amazement, they were all sitting there. Hell, I was the only one in that section of the store...

There were campers at Best Buy here for the first THREE shipments. If TRU had that many, they must have JUST put them out.

Bullshit? Heh, reanimated, I have NO reason to bullshit man, I'm being serious. In fact, the day before that, my Aunt went in to that same store, a couple hours after open, and she picked up one for her son, one for my cousin, and one for my brother. And yes, there were others on the shelves, untouched.
EVERYONE goes to BestBuy, but the smart move would be to go to a Target, Walmart, Toys-R-US, etc.

Same thing happened with the PS2 eventually.

Got one at walmart without problem. just this past Friday to boot. It was the core system, but they had plenty of harddrives.... the only complaint I have is that there aren't any games and the xbox games I want to play aren't patched yet. But these are minute complaints, and they've been said before.
I happened to be in my local toys r us today and sure enough, there were two systems (one core) on the shelf.
Everyone I know who wants one already got one, though, so I didn't even buy one of them.
Oh yeah, happy birthday to me. Woohoo!

Aren't they pretty major complaints, since from what you've said, you can't actually play Xbox360 (or Xbox) games on your Xbox360 system?

I don't know about you but in my area, chicago area, i've never had a problem getting anything that is the "hot item". My friend picked up a PS2 a few days after they came out by just calling around. The Coconuts I just went to get headphones has had 2 XB360s for sale for the last 2 weeks just sitting there. I know cause I keep getting tempted to pick one up.

I was fortunate 2 weeks ago to be sent the Futureshop(Canadian Electronics shop that was bought as well by Best Buy) Flyer hours before they opened that day, showing they had 360s in stock. 10am came, I drove away from work and walked into a Best Buy actually instead, picked up a 360 and walked out like nothing. They even thru in PGR for free.... by accident lol I didn't notice until that night that gee whats this doing here.

I got in about 12 hours this weekend. I fucking love it far more having played it in my house than I did playing at the kiosk. I think we're going to see a LOT more popularity in 2006 for the 360. Honestly, the Live integration (the online capabilities) is going to be VERY VERY tough to beat. Good luck PS3, and I mean that.

Yeah, the Live Arcade stuff is simply awesome, along with all of the other new Live & integration features.
I've been having a blast with PGR, CoD, Condemned and Kameo. All awesome games. Can't wait to see how everything blows up when Halo 3 is shown.

I just got back from Best Buy moments ago (spending some gift cards), and there were 3 units on the shelf. Add to that the 6 or so I saw at Wal-Mart days ago and the 2 I saw at Target the week before Christmas and I'd wager they weren't as hard to get as the media would have you believe. Hell, I bought my original Xbox the Christmas of its launch, and the only problem I had finding that was going the "smart" route and trying to avoid EB and such where I figured they'd be sold out. When I got tired of getting turned down at Best Buy, Target, etc. the first EB I called had 8 on hand, they just weren't selling since EB made you buy the 2 games and extra controller bundle with it, things I'd have bought anyway.
The moral of the story is, don't believe the hype kids. Try the places that nobody buys electronics, like Sears and those places and you should have little to no trouble.

So far, Condemned is my winner. A bit too much wandering-around-in-the-dark-maze to be a gold title, it still wins huge points for atmosphere and immersion. MANY times I jumped or jerked around looking for the source of a sound or to check a shadow that I thought had moved. I loved the steam tunnels most of all. I'm constantly amazed at the graphic quality of the environment. Really screams next-gen to me.
I'm not much for racing games, so I miss out on that love - but I've watched a good amount of PGR TV (streamed live feeds of OTHER people racing) and in a weird way, that's even better than playing.
I'm saving Kameo as a weekend-killer. I hear it's a gas once you get past the first level, oddly enough.
Definitely worth every penny.

But I did spend all night going through the Live Arcade downloading all of the trials I could find. That's been pretty awesome and I can't wait to see what is to come in the future. I'm very pleased with the console, and my complaints stem from the lack of instant gradification that I got by buying an original xbox late in its run. BUT come March I think the system is going to be up to potential.

I'm really happy for you guys who love your 360 so much. I don't play sports games or driving sims, so I just don't see $400+ worth of value there yet. I'm interested in PD0 and Kameo, but I'll be happy to pick them up for $20 each late next year when I finally decide to get a 360.
I need something unique to finally make me take the jump and I don't see anything like a Panzer Dragoon Orta or Jet Set Radio Future on the radar. I'll definitely be watching E3 closely.

Why can't he play Xbox360 games on his Xbox360? I didn't get that from what he said at all....
The XBox 360 can't emulate Xbox games the way the PS2 can emulate PS1 games. It requires multiple software updates as they make the emulator stable enough for each game. Right now the list of games that actually work is fairly limited, with some bigger name titles (I'm not remembering which one off the top of my head) actually having been pulled not that long ago due to instability.
Edit: I am refering to his comments about "patching." I am also assuming the original commenter has no desire to play the launch games.

Automaton, I think a big big part of what everyone is missing is that Xbox360 is only partially about the games. It's in many ways MORE about the community. This is something that is hard to "get" if you don't have it. I know I didn't - at all.
Example: Because every game on the 360 has unlockable "achievements" that give you "gamerpoints", you are more inclined to play games you might not otherwise just to raise your gamerscore - on your gamertag card that everyone on Live can see. Like when I looked up Benson and saw that he had 2000+ points and I was at 250 or whatever, I immediately felt like I needed to get on -something- and start playing. I ended up playing Gauntlet with 3 others online and unlocking 4-5 Gauntlet achievements - upping my score by a few hundred points.
Now, that may sound stupid to you - or simply too expensive - and I can relate, but if the lack of a slam-dunk title is stopping you then you are missing a bet. The only reason I can see to NOT get a 360 is if you plan on not joining the Live community.

Here in Pasadena, California I haven't seen a 360 sitting/waiting to be picked up.
launch day - Sold Out!
Sears in Pasadena, CA - only received 3 and sold out!
Best Buy on the 18th - all 70 were sold out, I was lined up and the 5th person to be told that the last one was already sold out!
3 days before x'mas at Best Buy - NADA!
3 days before x'mas at Target - NADA!
2 days before x'mas at Best Buy - NADA!
forget Gamestop, and Electronics Boutique!
and Major Nelson tells us that there are weekly shipments? where are they then?

I would say it's a lot more about being the center of everything you do in your livingroom, something Microsoft has been trying (and failing) to do at least since they bought out Web TV.

Sounds a lot like the MMORPG grind. Performing tasks for the sake of performing them, no real end-game in sight. I'm pretty high on Live, but that comment there dampens my enthusiasm for the Microsoft model just a bit.

Yeah, I agree with this sentiment. I mean, sure LiveArcade and gamer points are great ideas, but something still seems wrong to me about buying a gaming system not for the games. I realize that consoles are evolving to include more features and such, but right now I'm a bit skeptical about these features because like MMORPGs I know I'd just get bored of the grind after a while. For now, at least, I'll be waiting for some better titles, maybe see how Full Auto pans out (although the story is apparently a laff riot)

And no, I don't live in the boonies. Well, not entirely the boonies (Portland Oregon). You just have to be a relentless shopper and call every store. You may have to drive an hour or two round trip, but you'll find one if you look hard enough... (that couldn't have been said last week though)

Well, I was pretty specific about who I'm talking to. Obviously if you require a slam-dunk title to buy, there is nothing anyone or anything can do to convince you to buy until that happens.
I'm talking to the fence-sitters who may be looking at the 360 and thinking, hmm the games are good - but not good enough I don't think. To the undecideds who want to play PDZ or Madden or whatever but aren't sure if it's worth it - I am saying with as much vigor as possible, get it and you won't be disappointed (so long as you're on Live).
The gamerpoints thing was just an example of why. I don't play just to get points, and that wasn't what I said. I play because I enjoy the game(s) and the points simply give me a little extra reason and reward to do so. Whereas I may not play PGR typically because I'm not THAT into racing games, I found myself trying out a few races just to see if I could unlock some achievements. Same with other titles.
Here's another example: When I tried to get in touch with Benson, he was unavailable. I messaged him that I'd try him later, and loaded up PDZ. Some time later, I was alerted with an on-screen button that Benson had sent me a message. As it turned out he was saying he wouldn't be available, but that sort of alert could have signaled the beginning of an online session. I like that my "friends" can get to me in-game at any time (this can be turned off for you sensitives) and we can game together seamlessly. It's like the best of All-Seeing-Eye on the PC, with voicechat and IM integrated.
Don't get me started on the gamer rep, or the player zones, that now have me looking at the PC world's infestation of l33t k1dz and wishing they could have it as good as the 360 Live players do.

From what I can tell, here in Houston, the 2 Gamestop stores that had the most pre-orders are getting thiers filled first, with all the other stores getting less or none. Last week I was told I was #25 on the list at the beginning of the week. At the end of the week, my friend got his call and checked where I was in line and found out I moved down to #15. As of a call today, I am now #10 on the list. The guy told me they were trickling in every few days and said if I am lucky, I MIGHT have mine by the end of the week, most likely next week at the latest barring they stop shipping them for some reason. Sounds to me like they are getting thier shit together and shipping units consistently, but who knows for sure. All I know is I would like to have mine for my New Years party... I will be praying heavily... lol

It's like the best of All-Seeing-Eye on the PC, with voicechat and IM integrated.I agree, it adds another level of competition and depth to the games. Not too long ago I was racing against my friend in beating CoD2 on Veteran. It took 3 days, from time to time I’d look at where he was in the game by hitting the guide button. It’ll tell you right there what level he’s on, and which levels he’s already beaten. If it wasn’t for that I never would have kept playing through the thousands of deaths that it took to beat that game on Veteran, and I doubt he would have either. Typically when I get stuck on one checkpoint for 3 hours, I’d put the game down. But this way there was an incentive to keep going.
It also encourages you to replay the games by putting challenges out there. Can you beat an entire Quake 4 level with only the railgun? This gives you a reason to go back and try to play the games in different ways. Like a macro game built around all the games that you own. I guess you can't have an idea of how bizarrely fun this could be unless you experience it. It's really quite innovative.
For launch titles; never in my life have I bought 6 games at launch and played through nearly all of them in under a month. And I’ll be getting 2 more when I get back from “vacation”; DOA4 and PGR3. This is a hell of a launch.

Not really; remember, the scores that they have you look at primarily are from your friends list. You aren't performing tasks for the sake of performing them, with no one noticing that you're doing it. You're performing tasks to rank higiher than people you have listed as a friend. If you just have random strangers on your friends list, then that's something else.
I hate the MMO grinds, it's one of the main reasons why I don't play MMOs anymore, but when I look up at my leaderboard for Geometry Wars and I see my friend's score is higher than mine, I am incapable of resisting to pick up a controller and push myself that much harder to get a higher score. And then I send a message, notifying that friend "hey, your score? Outdated," only for the next day to receive a similar message with a similar result.
I think the heavier focus on your friends list being the first thing you see when comparing scores, and being able to filter said scores to just see how your friends are doing, is a very small, subtle, but welcome focus.

Actually, the PS2 does emulate the PS1. There are actually games that do not run on the PS2 from the PS1 library. The only reason that the Xbox 360 has problems emulating the Xbox games is due to there being to different chipsets in the Xbox 360 and the Xbox. (Nvidia in the Xbox and ATI in the 360).

NO, it does NOT. Those games don't run because of a difference in the hardware that was removed in the process of getting the set small enough to go into the PS2.
For the PS2 to emulate games it would need a standard hard drive with an emulator and individual game emulation profiles on it just like the 360 has. You think all that shit is stored in the BIOS or something?
Here's the best link I could find:
The PS2 is a whole new machine, however Sony have included the original PS1 chipset for backwards compatibility, meaning you can play [some] PS1 games on a PS2, but not the other way around.

Damn, I can barely crack 100k. MadPoppaSmurf is my GM. I think a lot of systems that went unsold at X-mas time from EBAY will be making a 'surprise' return to the store. I hope MS can keep enthusiasm for the system high, but they need to release some new games. I don't like being stuck with the launch titles for more than 1 month...give the people something new. I keep hearing DOA4 will slip into early 2006.

PS2 doesn't emulate PS1 games. The PS2 has a shrunken down version of the PS1 chipset in it that PS1 games run on.
That has absoultely no effect on the point I was making.

I was in on the "Official Xbox 360 hunt" thread here on the forums, and I got one in Tampa after only a week or so of hunting. I know a lot of other people in that thread got theirs last week too.
I'm not saying they are easy to find; our Best Buy stores had lines that night too. I called stores every morning and eventually my friend tipped me off that the SuperTarget by me got 80 units. I didn't even make it until noon and I still got one.
That same day I read in the "hunt" thread that others got theirs too, from Targets and from Sears, etc.
I would listen to the advice given in this thread and just try the traditional retail outlets. People swarm the electronics stores, but there's nobody in retail stores during the day.
I think if you kept your eyes peeled on Tuesday/Wednesday mornings when the shipments come in you'll be able to find one without killing yourself.

You don't have to sell me on the positives of Live. Other than the fact that you have to pay for it, it's pretty polished.

Every stupid comment about 360 supplies begin with these four words, or an approximation of them.
Do NOT listen to random game store employees. They have no clue what they are talking about, and for some reason, they will cook up something instead of admit that.[QUOTE=*Legion*]Every stupid comment about 360 supplies begin with these four words, or an approximation of them.

I laughed my ass off because this statement is so amazingly true. The ABSOLUTE LAST people you want to talk to is the EB salespeople, because they will tell you anything you want to hear as long as you plop money down on presells. Hell, they'll tell you Elvis himself will deliver your X360 for you tomorrow for a mere $75 down payment.

I know I brought this story up before, but here it goes:
I bought Ultimate Spider-man right when it came out. It sucked HORRIBLY, and I beat it in about four hours. The next weekend I took it back to EBgames and traded it in as a used game. My conversation with the sales person, who was rather courteous, included me saying that the game really sucked and that I would of been better off just sticking with Spider-man 2.
Now while I was still in the store browsing used games to use up my store credit on, someone comes in and asks about Ultimate Spider-man. The sales guy couldn't stop talking about how awesome it is, and how much people have enjoyed it. That man walked out with a copy of Ultimate Spider-man.

It's polished BECAUSE you have to pay for it.

It's polished BECAUSE you have to pay for it.Well not anymore, they’ve got the Silver thing now, and pretty much every other weekend you can do multiplayer with that for free (it seems, I can’t test it), but yeah $50 for 2 million subscribers sure gives them a lot of money to spend making Live a great service.
