Gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23320) is reporting this morning that Nintendo has moved over 8 million Wiis in Japan.

The Nintendo Wii has surpassed the eight million unit sales mark in Japan since the console's December 2 launch in the region, according to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain.

Despite the console being the current market leader, bolstered by continuing strong sales in Western territories, the Wii has shown signs of slowing in its homeland Japan. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said earlier this month, "The Wii is in the most unhealthy condition since it hit the Japanese market."

I guess that's pretty good, eh?

8 million consoles! Goly gee, now if they only had games that sell.

I buy plenty of Wii games. Just not ones that were made for the Wii... >.>

seems like this is just PR to combat the recent bad PR about Wii sales declining horribly in Japan of late.

- Yes, but it's also all true, with the Ninty rep actually admitting weak sales, etc. If this had been Sony they would've claimed something like 150% market penetration, that sales were slowing because everyone who wanted one in Japan had now bought one, and their mother, etc., etc. But, in all likelihood the economy probably does have something to do with it. In any case, Big-N can't really complain.
