Looks like Fallout fans are getting something else to be excited about. Bethesda announced today the development of Fallout: New Vegas. This is not a DLC pack for Fallout 3, this is appears to be a standalone game. Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58229):

Titled Fallout New Vegas, it's being developed by Obsidian Entertainment (Alpha Protocol, Neverwinter Nights 2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II) with PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 versions planed for a simultaneous launch in 2010.

Few other details were revealed, with Bethesda noting that New Vegas will be a role-playing game in the style of Fallout 3, but did not confirm if it uses the same engine.

I'd like to fight mutants in Nevada... It already could be mistaken for a ravaged area with all that desert.

Saw that apex, I am down to playing RPGs by these guys (obsidian/bethesda/bioware) now. I don't know if I can go back to turn based. I love fallout3, any game where people can watch you play it for hours has to have something going for it. My girl tolerates this game because she is amazed at the level of character interactions. I mean usually I just kill stuff, but here I kill it in the context of a relationship. The ladies dig the drama!

I hope this next version is a little more hardcore. I didn't really feel like a "bad guy" when I was playing through as an evil role and when playing through as good or neutral it's such a breeze you win by level 4. >.<

Next Year though? I guess this most certainly has to be using the same assets and engine. Those obsidian guys are talented if they are GIVEN ENOUGH TIME. I really don't want to see this rushed like KOTOR 2 was.

Fallout 2 had New Reno...

Oh man, I hope it is Isometric. That would be heaven to me. One set of Fallout games coming out that are like the older style, with turn based combat. And another set coming out that are Fallout 3 style. I can't imagine they are outsourcing another first person Fallout to another company, so I am thinking it is probably going to be isometric and turn based.

I wonder how long they have been working on it.

Just because it was just announced doesn't mean it just started development. It could have been in development since Bethesda decided to go first person with Fallout 3.

I can't imagine it uses the same engine and assets because Bethesda is going to keep pumping out DLC for Fallout 3 and they are probably designing Fallout 4 already and in the same style as Fallout 3 to be released several years down the road.

I just hope there are mutant versions of the 'clackers', those guys who stand on the street corners wearing gigantic rucksacks and clacking porn advertisements at passers by. I crack up at their almost machine-like routine.

They had a game in development since 2006 with the code name Project New Jersey, it might be this new Fallout game.

I think that was Alpha Protocol. One of the devs posted a comment on twitter (ugh) on April 3rd saying they had signed a new contract and that they were happy. I guess that's when they finalized the deal with Bethesda.

Ok, scratch that. Georgia was AP. New Jersey was cancelled.

Will they actually put in RPG and the mature content that was vastly lacking from F3? F3 was a simplistic, dumbed down mostly FPS teen game with an undeserved R rating. I want something that is a LOT closer to the original two games, with a DEEP storyline with mature themes, and all the other great things that was taken out for whatever BS reason.

I agree, KOTOR 2 would have been a masterpiece sequel if not for the bugs and the terribly rushed ending.

NWN2 MOTB was also great. These guys just need time so I hope they get it.

I want me some more Fallout. I hope it does not have a level cap or if it does it is higher than 20 or 30.

I'm not going to bag-out Fallout 3 quite this much but I agree largely with the sentiment.

Fallout 3 was Fallout Bethesda-fied and we all know that post-Morrowind Bethesda have no been doing their best work.

I still really enjoyed Fallout 3 as a game but I didn't consider it a great Fallout.

With Obsidian on the case I am quite excited. Obsidian is Chris Avellone's baby and as most of you will be aware Avellone is not a Fallout newb. Outside of Troika being magically resurrected and given the IP the announcement of Obsidian doing a Fallout game is one of the best things that could happen to the franchise.

Ooooh sweet. Skipped F3 due to it's heritage. But this one sounds exciting. Hopefully a true RPG with little in common with F3, which really was just a bad shooter with some nonconsequential RPG stats included, and more in common with Obsidians other games (sans the bugs).

So long as they stick to the writing quality of KotOR 2 or Mask of the Betrayer and not the original NWN2. Bleugh... what horrible pacing that title had.

Okay, have to point out the hypocrisy here. You skipped playing the game, yet criticize it? Fallout 3 is a great game, regardless of what you have to say about the other 2.

Play it before you hate on it.

Fallout 3 was GOTY 2008 for me, so I will definately pick this up. Unless it's an isometric game, fuck that 1990's crap. If you're so damn fond of isometric games go buy games at Spiderweb software.

The viewpoint is that big a deal ? Heh. If it were isometric and they did it well, I wouldn't see a problem. 2008 must have been a slow year too.

I will be up for purchasing this if it is classic fallout or first person fallout. If it is a tactics or brotherhood of steel type game I'll probably pass though...

Don't have to play it, it's enough that I saw it on a friends PC and read enough reviews. When many sentences in those reviews start "As in Oblivion" or "Like Oblivion" - a game which I played and didn't particularly like due to weak main storyline, meaningless stats, radiant AI being particularly stupid, needing a ton of mods to make it acceptable on a PC as opposed on a console etc, I really don't need to waste money on an Oblivion with guns.

I really have no idea why Bethsoft is considered the pinnacle of RPG developers, since Daggerfall they only make shooters with some slight RPG stats that don't really make a difference. Another playthrough where you make different choices isn't necessary as Beth makes the game in a way that you can see everything on the first playthrough, no matter what class and abilities.

Hope that Obsidian remedies that and makes a worthy Fallout.

Bad news for ya'll hoping FO to return to its roots
What is Fallout: New Vegas?

Fallout: New Vegas is a futuristic post-apocalyptic cRPG set in an alternate universe based on 50s sci-fi pulp fiction, as if the world had stopped during the optimistic 50s and found itself in a dystopian post-apocalyptic reality. It will make use of not only the engine, but the gameplay style of Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3, however, with a brand new story and setting.
