Slim pickings this week but there are a few familiar titles that make it a fun week none-the-less.
Remember these are previews more than reviews so it's up to you lot to say whether or not the choices are actually worth reading! Remember to check out the release calendars for DC (http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/comics/), Marvel (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?date=2009-01-07), Top Cow (http://www.topcow.com/Site/upcoming.html), Image (http://www.imagecomics.com/schedule.php?d=20090107), Dark Horse (http://www.darkhorse.com) and all your other favourites! So without further ado let's have a look at this weeks most interesting titles.
Detective Comics #853
The first 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader' issue was received warmly...by most. Perhaps one for real fans only but an interesting and weird tale regardless. Batman's rogues gallery continue to reflect on the many lives and deaths of their nemesis. A wacky metaphor for his inevitable return? Certainly but still one that is very much worth picking up.
Justice League of America #32
JLA is one of those series' that rarely breaks out as something really outstanding. The thing is that month on month I really enjoy the stories and the recent tale of Starbreaker, as seen in a Faces of Evil one-shot, has been A-grade comic fun. Tired of big events? This book is for you!
Skrull Kill Krew #1
I'm going to pick up the Secret Invasion paperback soon, my hatred for Civil War carried me past the event. This book comes out of it and hopefully it isn't just a cynical cash-in on something many people loved. Lots and lots of violence in this one so if you like your newsprint sprayed with red then pick it up. Skrulls bleed red right?
Mighty Avengers #24
This is sort of Marvel's Justice League right now and it's enjoyable for similar reasons. The Scarlet Widow has returned and her brother Quicksilver makes a guest appearance. Iron Man has been shamed once again and Hank Pym is back in control of this new squad. Expect some Fantastic Four and Young Avengers involvement too!
Also of note this week:
Very little from Image with Invincible being all about the aftermath of the weak-sauce crossover event. Marvel has lots of Wolverine cover variants which are pretty cool but X-Force, Deadpool, Spidey and a load of others are out there for those who truly believe. The wonderful art of the new Azrael series continues, perhaps the most pleasing of the Battle for the Cowl's off-shoots. The Arkham Asylum one-shot hits alongside another issue of the great Outsiders too.
