Team Lazarus has released an unofficial remake of Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny, titled Ultima V: Lazarus.

Made over a five-year period by a team of unpaid (but talented) volunteers using the Dungeon Siege engine, Lazarus contains full 3D graphics, a CD-quality orchestral score, new characters and side-quests, and many other improvements to the original game.

A link to the download can be found on the Lazarus home page (http://www.u5lazarus.com). A trailer (http://www.planetdungeonsiege.com/ultima5/tapestry_movies.asp) is also available.

Lazarus itself is free, but it does require an installed copy of Dungeon Siege. The download is a little over 500 megabytes.

The authors are also looking for mirror sites willing to host the download. Congratulations to Team Lazarus for a job well done!

Got a mirror for that trailer? I hate Fileplanet .....but this does look really cool. Im hurting for a decent dungeon crawl. Dungeon Seige really sucked though.

Well, I hope the game is better than their video encoding... but none the less, this looks interesting.

I'm definately going to download this... does it work with Dungeon Siege 2? I know where my installs are for it... I'd have to go digging for DS1.

I'm with Perigon. I remember this thing being my shining hope with Dungeon Siege.

And of course, now I'm at the mother's house with my DS discs waaay back home. Someone lemme know if this is worth it for when I get back. :)

I too remember this with fond memories. Sadly, I'm not even sure where my DS disk is these days.

As someone who's making mods for a game myself (NWN2), I think the moral of the story is that above all else, you have to ship within a magic window after the game is released. If you're finished four years after the game comes out, there's likely to be few people to play it.

Still, my kudos to the development team. Just sticking with a project like this requires zen-like dedication.

Is that why you've started making yours before the game is even released? :P

I think I'll have to go out and buy dungeon siege purely to be able to play this mod now, I haven't seen a team that involved and dedicated despite lack of resources since project offset.

Good thing Dungeon Siege is like $2 and a paperclip now. :)
Though, I still have my discs.

I need to check this out, but I want to hear comments from other people before. The Ultima series is one of my most beloved, so I'm naturally curious.

You have to give them credit for sticking it out. A lot of other modders would have stopped well before reaching the four year mark. Especially with an engine that was not as popular as some of the others that are out. I found my DS disk and downloaded. Unfortunately it will be a few days before I can give it a go.

Wow, I knew there was a reason I bought this game!

I can't get the mod to launch. It either sticks at the screen telling me to insert the disk 1 of Dungeon Siege, yes I have it in. Or it locks up just after selecting new game. I will mess with it later to see if I can get it working but right now... ..off to work I go. Anyone having better luck?

I'd love to try this out but what's the cheapest way to get hold of a copy of Dungeon Siege 1 these days?

Actually, that's exactly why we're doing it now. Fortunately we have NWN, so everything is being prototyped using that game engine.

For NWN, many years ago, I started planning my mod a couple years before the game came out. RPGs are very ameniable to such things, as there's tons of dialog and planning to do. FPS games typically require the game engine before you can do more than planning and some modeling.

Very cool. Seems a wise decision.

Oh! Wow, hey, it's you.

...I'm definitely planning on getting some voice recording done for you in the week after Christmas. Not at home near the equipment right now, so hand are kind of tied at the moment. ;)

It's a small Internet it seems. :)

I'm being somewhat flaky these holidays too, spending lots of time with kids and new toys. Still, I did manage to eat far too many chocolate covered espresso beans and write some dialog over the last couple days. Hopefully it still makes sense after my caffiene induced vision has cleared.

Sounds good! Glad to hear your weekend was filled with kids and toys. ;)
