Gothic 1 - A Question of Armament (Please Help!)

Hi all, just started getting into Gothic 1 to start me off with the Gothic games and having a blast so far!

Only problem I'm having is that I've just learned two handed weapons and can't find any two handed weapons anywhere at the moment, despite looking and enquiring at merchants. What am I doing wrong? Where can I get my hands on such a weapons or a two handed sword or something?

Also what are and how does one get the best weapons in the game?

Gothic has been really fun so far, and 2 looks cool but I've heard mixed things about 3, any thoughts on that too?

It's been a while since I've played Gothic 1, but IIRC most (all?) merchants only sell two handed weapons once you've reached a certain chapter (4?). You can get them earlier by killing orcs or templars, both use two-handed weapons.
As for Gothic 3, it was pretty buggy when it was launched but the worst stuff has been fixed by now. It's not as good as the first two, though.
