According to IGN Hideo Kojima's team is working on an online version (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/678/678004p1.html) of Metal Gear.
The real fun apparently comes after people have played Subsistence. "We would like to make a more meaningful Metal Gear Online after hearing the opinions of people who've played the Online battles in Subsistence." Kojima comments. "Years from now, we'd like to realize this on the PlayStation 3, on the Xbox 360, or maybe on the PC."

"Years from now"? Why does it seem like Japan so far behind in multiplayer department. Europe and the US and even the rest of southeast Asia already know whats up.

Japanese people have a fear of playing/talking with unknown people. My girlfriend has a mortal fear of Live ;) She thinks it is very weird I "hang out" with people I don't know.

i always thought that was strange. the video game mecca of the universe would rather get stuck in a single player rpg for months rather than play interactively with people from around the world.

Sorry. Splinter Cell has been refining multiplayer stealth games for a few years now. The Metal Gear games are long in the tooth, clumsy and clunky. They are also heavily story-driven. Take away the story, and the game isn't very good.

Although, there are those that would argue the story isn't very good either.

Metal Gear multiplayer will have a lot of catching up to do and frankly, I'm not interested. Now if only they could make a multiplayer Metal Gear CARD game! Woah! Those crazy kats in Japan think of ALL the good ideas. ;-)

Wow! You actually traveled in time to when MGS3:S's online component is released over here, played it, and decided it wasn't good? Neato!

Seriously, you might want to actually READ about how it plays before you discredit it, 1up.com has been raving about how fun it is for the last week or so. Splinter Cell's online is great, but it's pretty stupid to frown on something before even knowing how it works.

MGS's story elements more then makes up for Splinter Cell's marginally evolved single player mechanics, at least imo.

I can picture it now, sitting in living rooms all round the world watching cutscenes together. This is the future ;) /flame
I love the MGS series it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I have faith in Kojima.

Yeah, it is going to be three hours of cutscenes broken up by 5 second bursts of intense online action (translation: running down a hallway) before the next three hours of cutscenes.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kojima were to develop a 360 exclusive MGS focusing on multiplayer. Seems to fit how he sees platforms.

I imagine he more means that he has a lot in development right now. Kojima's working on something like four different games already.

Now that's funny.

Japan has always been a little behind in the internet departement. At first it was because local calls were billed by the minute so dial-up was really expensive, though from what I've read they're catching up with broadband.

Funny how neighbouring Korea is the world leader in multiplayer gaming while Japan is trying to catch up.

LMAO MGS GAMES HAVE LONG CUTSCENES, IT'S THE PILLAR OF HILARITY!!!!

Everytime there's talk about MGS some idiots have to make lame jokes about the lenth of the cutscenes. The presentation and storylines are not everyone's cup of tea, we get it. Just get over it already.

Some Japanese multiplayer games that come to mind: FFXI Online (successful), Mario Kart DS (successful) and the entire Nintendo WiFi thingy, FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus,...? I think Japanese developers are jumping into the multiplayer fray just about now. It's not like coming a bit late to the party is really going to make all that much of a difference. Halo 2 has an online penetration rate of 18% right now - 1 in 5 people. That doesn't exactly blow you away. At least not yet. The non-MMO market of multiplayer games isn't going to reach its true potential for a few years now anyway.

I think it was more in the way of good natured ribbing. I think you need to relax a little  Im sure the game is going to be great. Kojima hasn't failed me yet, well except with boktai

It probably wouldn't even exist if not for MGS. Lots of gadgets and the splits don't make it any better than MGS beyond your personal preference and apparent appreciation for poor and lacking storylines with nothing but a shadow of the presentation MGS presents from graphics to interaction and freaking ice cubes melting over time.

Never speak bad about MGS again punk.

How can I relax when I hear the same dumb joke every time a MGS-themed news item comes up?! * runs away crying *

p.s. Boktai ruled.

Uh, guys? No offense to Vandenh, but this news story is misleading. If you click the link and actually read it, you'll see that they aren't currently *working* on a new online MGS, as the statement by Vandenh suggests. They are merely planning to probably do one at some point in the future.

Yeeps.

Also: KOJIMAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Ok here's the truth:

The MGS series' gameplay mechanics are way behind the times in comparison with Splinter Cell, and its stories come down to a compilation of any and every conspiracy theory that Kojima could pull out of his ass.

That said, I'm looking forward to MGS4.

Funny because the developers for Splinter Cell online said they were inspired by MGS.

That said, I love them both for many reasons. MGS is just mindblowing/boggling...and Splinter Cell gets me in that whole Jack Bauer mood.

See, I think that's the way to look at it. Too many people try to compare Splinter Cell and MGS because they both employ stealth in their gameplay, when in fact they are just utterly different games. Each has its strengths and weaknesses and is appreciable on a different level.

Offtopic: What the hell is it with the Japanese and conspiracy theories? They seem even more obsessed with em' than most cultures.

Very true, but MGS was never really billed as a stealth game. Its a Tactical Espionage Action game.

Indeed. Stealth is still how most people readily identify it though. And as the 'espionage' part suggest, there's obviously some stealth elements -- it's just far from the whole of the game.
