Hideo Kojima has revealed plans to release a PSP Metal Gear Solid game. It is primed to arrive in Japan mid-way through 2006.
Codenamed Metal Gear Solid B.D., it's being touted as a completely new iteration of the series; not a remake. Speaking to Famitsu, Kojima said, "It's totally new."

Somewhat enigmatically, he adds, "Even though it's only on PSP, it's going to be pretty amazing. It might be too new for people. I don't even know if they're going to sell this thing. I mean, I find it interesting myself, though who knows what people will think of it. Really, though -- it's just a normal game. Only with one little thing radically different about it."

Konami already publishes card-based games in the Metal Gear Acid series. It's been known for a few months that Kojima's team has been working on a secret new PSP game. In a blog entry back in October he wrote, "It will feature a completely new system. We have to learn if it'll be accepted. We'll have to create a prototype and play-test. It'll have a system that's different from traditional games. That'll be its selling point."

Sounds good. Hopefully this "completely new system" doesn't stray too far from classic Metal Gear gameplay.

I say it's an add-on for the PSP

Kojima should really get hip to the news, games don't sell on the PSP. He should just release all the cut scenes on UMD. That would sell better than the game.

The twist: Solid Snake is dead, but you still play as him somehow. It comes with a coffin add-on for the PSP.

With all the cutscenes, the UMD should come with an extra battery...

I love this guy's thought flow. so abstract. first he says its amazing and then by the end of the paragraph he says its just a normal game. thats pretty funny.

I hate gameplay "systems". It almost always means "a shard of gameplay inside a big convoluted mess of a "story" that could be fun it if was ever fully realized but rarely is because that would interfere with the pacing of said "story".

Although on the other hand, I was always really proud of Kojima for making the VR missions for that very reason...

Aren't the editors on this site always complaining about lack of innovation?

This is the Frank Miller collaboration that Hideo announced more than a month ago in his blog.

I hope this strays away from classic Metal Gear Solid gameplay as much as Hideo wants to and that he isn't forced to change the gameplay to fit the MGS mold because MGS (not Hideo!) fans want to.

You could put this snippet of the quote in a Revolution news item and nobody would know the difference. I'm not saying that this is a bad, or good, thing, just noticing something.

If it's a free-roaming city where you steal cars, I swear to god I'm going to blow my fucking brains out.

In this version Solid Snake is trapped in a maze being chased by the ghosts of Ocelet Revolver and other vanquished foes. If he can find enough adrenaline packs he can temporarily fight back against the ghosts.

Damn it DoubleUranium, you're not supposed to make me laugh that hard at work.

None of the ideas in this thread are stupid enough for Kojima. I'd come up with some of my own but I never claimed to be the creative type. Some of the stuff here (http://www.caltrops.com/article0014.php) might fit the bill.

Side-scrolling MGS game with glow in the dark mushroom power-ups that recharge your batteries and turn you into Super Snake. You go from military strong-hold to military strong-hold only to be informed by one of their body guards that the kidnapped government official is in another strong-hold.

I bet this time around it will feature 'Gameplay'. Which entails branching movies.

"I wanted to make use of more than just the start button to skip cut-scenes. This time I want the player to be able to choose the scene they want to sleep through next."

I actually did fall asleep during a cutscene in that game once. It was like 5am and I had been up all night playing, and I just fell asleep. I woke up with raiden running up against a wall...that stupid little bitch...

My brother fell asleep during the same scene you did, I think. He fell asleep during the half hour split between the Snake part and the Raiden part. THe only reason I didn't fall asleep, I think, is because I was playing hte game through with 2 friends switching control every time we died.

No it was the part where you went into that kitchen and told that old cop to stay in the pantry or something. Thats where I fell asleep. BTW Raiden is a bitch.

Does the PSP have ANY original games?

I like Kojima. Completely new system that might be too new? Does that mean stranger than converting a game from stealth-action to a card game or building a game around a sunlight sensor? This could actually tempt me towards a PSP.

Agreed. Kojima is probably the only dev I know that gets me genuinely interested when he says he's working on something "different" and "new".

I add this everytime I post about MGS, because there's always those that like to take jabs at MGS, but here it is. "dreaming in an empty room" (a defense of Metal Gear Solid 2) (http://www.insertcredit.com/features/dreaming2/)

I don't really give a shit about Raiden or postmodern wackiness, it's the fact that Kojima seems interested in nothing but his batshit story ideas at the expense of everything else, gameplay included. MGS2 was okay (basically MGS1 with a few refinements and some lame obstacle courses) but MGS3 was just plain broken. I hope that by "completely new system" he means "nothing but boss fights" because that's pretty much all MGS3 did right.

Could you elaborate? I don't think I've ever heard someone say that MGS3's gameplay was broken. For an MGS fanboy, like myself, MGS3 is the pinnacle in gameplay for the franchise. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't love throwing live snakes at enemies?
