Bold words today from the would-be SqueEnix property, Eidos Interactive. They told MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/33885/Eidos-Batman-will-be-the-stand-out-game-of-2009) a few juicy bits like "Batman will be the stand-out game of 2009" and 'It’s as close to perfect as we’ve ever come". The first is more ballsy than the second as it implies that Arkham is going to be heads above everything else released this year, but the second is more up to interpretation... depending on how much you've liked Eidos' stuff in the past.
“We expect Batman Arkham Asylum to not only be the biggest game of the summer but one of the stand-out games of the year,” Eidos’ head of UK marketing Jon Brooke told MCV.
“It’s as close to perfect as we’ve ever come, it looks amazing, plays beautifully and has a rich twisting storyline with enormous replayability. I’m confident enough to say that it will set a new benchmark for licensed games and it’s going to establish itself as one of our best games ever.”
Eidos’ confidence in the product is mirrored in the publisher’s marketing campaign, which will be its biggest of the year.
I'm certainly looking forward to it, but someone needs to reel this hype machine in a tad.

Normally I would discount this as the usual hype, but of the head of marketing says it, it's just gotta be true!

From the gameplay movies it looks like a simple puzzle game; jump down on enemy grapple back up to a high point, rinse lather repeat and cry because thats not batman.

I agree, the concept of demos that can be downloaded should have already changed the nature of game marketing. All this hype that developers attempt to create for their games could be obtained simply by releasing a solid demo.
This game looks promising but that doesn't really mean anything. Most games are trash, well-made games are the exception and not the rule. The most I can say, then, about any of these games, including Batman, is that they are on my radar. I will follow them until they are judged garbage (most likely) or amazing (rare).

The marketing that we get now is a spill over from how other entertainment industries do it. Before, it would have simply been a matter of popping over to the local computer shop and picking up a diskette, or downloading the demo. Oh the old days...where hype was created from mere reporting, not actual office floors dedicated to making sure that YOU KNOW THE GAME'S NAME.

So who's going to byte the bullet and buy one, so the rest of can find out if it lives up to the hype?

There are not too many games I have liked from Eidos. Although their cool box art and design always kept me coming back to be disappointed. I'll probably by this one also since I always seem to fall for their marketing.
