City of Heroes hacker shuts down servers

Last night, a hacker somehow managed to shut down multiple City of Heroes servers. He also used the admin broadcast channel to direct people to his website and randomly kicked individuals on other servers. Cryptic/NCSoft have made no statement at this point other than "it's fixed," leading some to believe it was simply a case of lax network and/or password security.

So the "kid" (if he is a kid) says he only used a program accidentally released by the COH people and it isn't illegal to shut down a server and mess with a company and it's functions. I think he is a little optimistic. If I take a toyota truck and ram it into a toyota factory, bringing down it's production line for a couple days, I'd probably be prosecuted, just like this kid will be.

Yeah, but one of the tool's PURPOSES was to take down a server, so he was using it the way it was intended (granted this is the case). So in terms of analogy, you'd have to buy a Toyota brand Wrecking ball, and "accidentally" take down the wrong building (this being the aforementioned factory).

Where are you getting the information about the hacker's motivations or excuse-making?


This story brought a smile to my face. It is perverse of me, but I would have laughed and laughed if the hacker had somehow destroyed the character database and made them have to roll back servers to outside storage dates.

You think the hacker would have simply used his greater amount of access to cheat instead of playing his full hand so quickly.
