Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/the-godfather-ii-review?page=2) has posted their review for the latest Godfather licensed title, called, strangely, The Godfather II. They are not kind and give it a lowly 4/10.

To compound matters rather tragically, the game features some technical howlers that make no sense. Towards the latter third of the game the traffic completely disappeared for me, leaving an eerily empty world, also devoid of pedestrians. As well as making the game feel horribly empty, it meant that I had no choice but to travel across the city on foot, running for miles before coming across a rare parked car. And what of the game's PlayStation Home-esque art and animation style? There can't be too many people willing to stick up for that clinical, soulless style with its lurid colour balance. Seen in the context of a full game, it's even less appealing. Far from evoking a Mafioso style, its horribly dated-looking mannequins do the subject matter zero justice.

Having had such a great run of form with new IP, this is a stark return to the EA of old, where a treasured licence is butchered irredeemably. Lacking both a challenge and soul, and failing to even engage on a narrative level, what you're left with is an overly forgiving shooter with weak strategy elements, which only serve to make it even easier for you. Having played right to the end, I wish there was something I could point to in its defence, but all I'm left with is the empty realisation that they've managed to somehow make this even less entertaining than the flawed original.

but, but, but what about all those commercials (whoops - I mean exclusive reveals) on gametrailers TV? You mean it's not as cool as Geoff Keighly says it is?

Apparently you can complete it in about 8 hours with little to nothing to do after the story is over. I think it'll still be fun, and I'll probably give it a rental.

Got this from Gamefly, and I couldn't agree more. Its graphics seems terrible for a 360 title, plus the controls are just off. After getting through the intro I just couldn't bring myself to care about the rest of the game.

Mafia II will do a good enough job ripping off the Godfather movies anyway with much better gameplay.

I just hope this new Mafia game will be just as classy and great as the first one. I just get this feeling though that they 'Grand Theft Auto'd it up'. I really really hope that's not the case.

Quite likely since reviews of the first one hammered it for not following said games lead.

True. I didn't like the driving bits in the first Mafia that much. Driving in shitty cars doesn't do much for me.

Did they? I remember the reviews being very positive.

The PC reviews anyway...

Same here, i liked it because it wasn't what grand theft auto is so very much still is to this day. A kids game.

I'm pretty sure. My consumption of internet gaming media was much lower in 2002 as I had not yet achieved deity status. The review I remember bitched about the cops chasing you for speeding, no crazy and a lot of bugs.

According to Gamerankings, the original Godfather games got in the high 70s, so it wasn't a bad game, just not a great one. Right now Godfather II is also in the high 70s, so its probably around the same quality. I'm not going to trust a single review. Lets see what it ends up averaging as.

irony was here.

Ain't that the truth. It's like the guy who showed up to a birthday party that wasn't even a man enough to wish the person happy birthday.

IGN gave the game a 7.7 (good)

Hmmm...

To be honest I wasn't too impressed with the first game and I'm slowly getting tired of the GTA, Scarface, Saints Row, style games which is all this is so badly trying to be.

Although I would say the DLC for GTA was pretty impressive.

Agreed. Raised the bar in regards to DLC. Although getting paid millions upon millions of dollars would do that :P

Same here. While taking over the businesses and rackets was repetitve, I did really enjoy the first game because it was so much fun to do the missions that centered on the plot of the movie. I was really looking forward to the second one. I even held off on buying Empire: Total War because I wanted to buy this one instead. Bummer. Guess I'll go fight some Red Coats now and wait until this one goes to the bargain bin. :(
